Lower speeds will create more traffic jams and eventual accidents, more breaking and accelerating which means more polution. It's not only about the air, but the break dust is actually nefarious for the health. It's better to drive at a target efficiency/performance than simply driving slow all the time.
lower max speed means less braking and accelerating. it helps to prevent traffic jams too because of less difference in speed between cars on the highway and less braking and accelerating and overtaking.

back in like 2012 when they increased the max speed from 120 to 130 my govt was literally told by analysts that they hired, that it wouldnt get anyone to work faster and cause double digits in extra road fatalities every year. they did it anyway.
you are supposed to keep about 2 seconds gap between you and the car in front of you. the faster cars are going, the more distance is covered in 2 seconds. at 130 km/h, you can fit only 100/130 = about 75% of the cars that you can fit on the same road at 100km/h. of course at 130 people will generally get to their destination a bit faster too, but only if they spend a lot of time on the highway will that outweigh the reduction in capacity. because our country is quite small, you basically would need to drive from the southern border with belgium to the border with germany all the way in the north before you would see any benefit from driving at 130 km/h and having to wait longer at traffic lights, waiting for your turn before getting onto the highway

people rarely drive faster than 220 in Germany, there are too many curves, traffic etc so unlimited works well with common sense. 180 as a limit is also accaptable though. It has to be said, Germany has the lowest ratio of deaths on its autobahns, so unlimiting the speeds for certain parts definitly works. I see it as a way to increase concentration, as you permanently check for yourself which speed is accaptable. I tend to lose focus on limited speeds almost immediatly, I imagine this is the case for most people.
The biggest chunk of traffic never exceeds 140 anyways, and as most autobahns are conjested all the time it is somewhat rare to drive even faster than 80 during rush hour.

I don't think it would work now if we would ever change our roads to unlimited. Everyone is used to slower limites, which turns most people into shit slow drivers. I think it will have big crashes everyday if we would change it from one day to the other.

this cuases more serious accidents which block lanes and cause traffic jams which reduces traffic flow significantly. multiple cars are totaled every day on dutch highways during rush hour. less accidents would already significantly improve traffic flow when it matters most

yes but cars arent water drops, they are discrete units.
lets take another example. you have a stone quarry and you want to have a maximum amount of stones moved through a tunnel to the surface. if you jam in as many rocks as you can on a conveyor belt, they will bump into each other and into the walls. if you leave some room, the flow will be much better.

you can overtake people you just cant drive more than 100 km/h on average. sticking to the left lane is a traffic violation with a fine of like 400 euro.
Your arguments are valid and represent the current state of mind and science in many countries. From driving practice in Germany and many european countries, I can safely say that Germans make more efficent use of highway space without being unreasonable. This reflects in low deaths on the autobahn aswell as the surprising high numbers of vehicles on our very limited highway space (i live in the ruhr area).
To take on your stone example, you can think of slower stones creating waves of congested traffic, as not every driver is proficent in overtaking and many are half asleep as there is really nothing to think about when you drive 100kmh or less. sure, if you put in too many too fast, they will block and crash completely. I'd argue that they can go faster than 100kmh, as the German examples shows. it doesnt hurt when 3% of stones go 200kmh where they can, making for a more efficent usage of space bewteen those "waves".

People are getting angry about 30km? Our country from top north to bottom south is about 350km which will save you around 30-40minutes if you were to drive that.
In time for MOST people it won't make a difference, in safety however 30km is a lot and can prevent more deathly accidents from happening.
