I've been reading some stuff from some professor who said it's mostly because of that, and the dried out Eucalyptus leaves that are highly flammable, and that climate change was probably the lowest involved factor.
The guys research said something about the "nature friendly" policy of not preemptively burning these leaves and bushes from the earlier 2000s being one of the main causes for this stuff. Will look it up later, at office now, but it seemed pretty legit.
On another note; what can we as western countries actually do against climate change when the biggest polluters are the countries who simply do not and will not care, e.g. China, India, Pakistan etc?
I feel like whatever we're doing in the western world has little to no effect on the situation since the worst offenders are less developed countries with regimes that don't give a flying fuck.
