Have you ever had to do an egg drop project in school? How did you design your structure and did it survive the drop? I need ideas bad rn

You use toothpicks and glue to cover and egg and protect it from a 5 meter drop

Unfortunately only 20% of the egg can be covered in glue

try and make a cage for the egg using the toothpicks like at least 60% covered in toothpicks then cover that in glue because its not technically on the egg

Okay so think about it this way, you have to transfer the force of the drop away from the egg so if I was you I would do something like this, glue the toothpicks together into 4 long sticks make them pretty thick too, and then make those 4 sticks into a pyramid, the center of the pyramid is we're the egg goes and the tip of the pyramid is what will hit the ground first, this way the impact force will be absorbed by the sticks outwards away from the egg

imgur.com/a/vgQLDph here is a visualisation, place the egg around the middle but a bit more towards the tip, this is done so that the whole object doesn't flip around mid flight away from the tip

Hey bro, we just did the egg drop competition and I came second :) (It survived 3 drops) My teacher wouldn’t let me film the drop, but here’s a picture of it before, I used your design to hold the egg then built around it. imgur.com/a/TdWNnGe Thank u a lot for the advice :D

Toothpicks and glue only, the drop is 5 meters high, and the structure cannot be more than 50 grams (excluding the egg)
2020-01-18 04:28
Okay that's presumably 46~ or so toothpicks with the glue. I would build a stiff double toothpick pyramid core around the egg and make sure it rests very firmly in the pyramid structure with no wiggle room. Snap/cut toothpicks in half and build another cage around it (however haphazard) but I would start with octets using half length tooth picks, once you sufficiently build it around use full length toothpicks and build a larger cage around the first layer. So there should be something akin to 3 layers. The first layer is designed to break easily and absorb the bulk of the impact, while the second layer is to slow it down and the core (third layer) should be firmly protect the egg as the structure breaks around it. I would use more glue internally and less glue externally at each joint.

Sorry but what exactly is the objective? Do you design something the egg falls INTO or something that falls WITH the egg? Kind of like holding the egg as it falls? If you have glue I think you can first DRY the glue, and use that as extra paper thin material for something.

You design a structure that holds the egg as it falls, and it has to protect the egg from cracking. The mass of the glue adds up over time so it's better to use it to connect toothpicks

A parachute can actually work really good in the egg drop project, we're just not allowed to use them for this one

i passed my test in high school, i put my egg in the tube of a new paper towel roll, and then wrapped that roll with a towel. EZ project
