Wrong Climate Predictions

Germany xsyzzz12345678
There have been tons of false alarmist doomsday predictions that the earth will collapse in the next X Years, lots of them turned out to be false. But still, climate change is seemingly the most important topic nowadays (in Germany at least). Movements like Extinction Rebellion even call for the abolition of capitalism to prevent climate change, saying that it "isn’t about the Climate", therefore mixing environmentalism and (cultural) Marxism and trying to lure environmentalists into their socialist cults. Few important links about XR: medium.com/extinction-rebellion/extincti.. (from an XR co-founder) telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/10/12/extincti.. Now onto a list of failed doomsday predictions (feel free to add old articles, studies etc. in the comments, it would help a lot): 1. Peak Oil This theory started in 1956 when Geologist M. King Hubbert predicted a model that showed a Peak in oil production in 1995-2000, most other later models predicted oil to peak 2000-2030, with predictions of drying supply and skyrocketing prices made up to even the late 00's. Some people even expected a collapse of civilization because people will fight for energy. Now we are in 2020 and oil prices are low, there is plenty of supply left and no one is afraid of running out of oil because of technological progress outpacing the dwindling reserves and plenty of alternatives being developed and the peak will most likely be reached because of a lack of demand rather than supply, especially if we manage to develop fusion energy. Articles: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_oil forbes.com/sites/michaellynch/2018/06/29.. 2. Overpopulation and Famine Several books and articles (I'm looking at the late 60's) have predicted famines due to overpopulation to happen in the 20th century still, nowadays we're not even close to one. Birth rates are also steadily declining all around the world, in fact too low birth rates are becoming a problem in many first-world countries. Books predicting famines: The Population Bomb - Paul R. Ehrlich (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Population_Bom.. ) Famine 1975! - William and Paul Paddock (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Famine_1975! ) Articles looking back at it: fee.org/articles/what-the-overpopulation.. vox.com/the-big-idea/2017/12/12/16766872.. (even Vox claiming that overpopulation is not a problem anymore) 3. "Britain will be ‘Siberian’ in less than 20 years" In 2004, the Pentagon warned Bush that Climate Change will cause famine and civil unrest as Britain is plunged into a 'Siberian' climate by 2020 which will cause fights for ressources all over the world. Article: theguardian.com/environment/2004/feb/22/.. 4. Glaciers will be gone by 2020 Environmentalists predicted the glaciers in Glacier National Park, Montana USA to melt by 2020, with "warning signs" posted around the National Park, which have been removed as it is now 2020 and all glaciers there are still here. In fact, the glaciers have started shrinking before the industrial revolution as the little ice age came to an end. Not a doomsday scenario, but shows how the effects of climate change have been hugely exaggerated. Similarly with Al Gore's documentary "An inconvenient truth" in which he said that we have 12 years to save the world - 14 years ago. Article: nypost.com/2020/01/10/the-telling-tale-o.. 5. New Ice Age coming since 1970 Mostly around the 1970s, lots of researchers predicted the earth to cool due to human emissions like fine dust, some saying that the global average might plunge by six degrees by 2020. Oh well. Articles: Washington Post, 9 July 1971: "U. S. Scientist Sees New Ice Age Coming" i.imgur.com/jCr1L9K.png johnlocke.org/update/climate-experts-bel.. 6. Maldives will be under water by 2018 An article in 1988 claimed that the Maldives will be completely under water in 30 years, which simply hasn't happened yet. Article: pjmedia.com/trending/egg-on-their-faces-.. I'm not even denying climate change, but this hysteria and alarmism will get us nowhere, so you shouldn't be overly concerned. Climate Change is NOT the biggest issue right now! TL:DR countless doomsday predictions that the world will end or face huge problems turned out to be complete and utter bullshit

There is a climate change going on, this is a fact. Now the debate is "Is caused by mankind or just a natural thing" However, i think we shouldnt just hope its a natural thing, and do nothing, as a civilization we should take measures to try avoid further problems, even if it is only by precaution

yes, we should take measures. but the technology isn't yet advanced enough to effectively tackle the whole issue without pretty much abandoning modern society and forcing millions of people into poverty. this is what the stupid 'activists' don't, or rather don't want to understand. since most of their motivation lies in boasting with moral superiority and looking good and 'woke' in front of their friends and family, rather than solving actual problems.

I can agree with that! A very good point, thanks for adding on this conversation.

i agree that in the past people predicted things wrong but some people just exaggerate a bit. with todays technology im 100% certain the predictions we make today are way more thought-out than 30 years ago climate change is real and the sooner the more (mainly in politics) fight against it, the better just as extreme as right can the left be
2020-01-21 17:25
1, 3 and 4 were all (partly) in this century and only 15 years ago, and 1 and 3 were literally completely 100% wrong, so what breakthroughs in mathematical modeling were there in the last 15 years that predictions went from completely false to completely true?

the media makes money by making sensational headlines. all your sources are tabloid media you can make exactly the same case about terrorism, celebrity news, health issues... you name it, anything that they can put on their newspaper to sell news will be exaggerated and more often than not completely made up

I don't really wanna discuss this topic, so I'll let this guy do it for me. Lets start with number 6 regarding the Maldives: youtu.be/41TCWEl-x_g

You should probably base your opinions on scientific papers and articles, rather than on articles published by the mass media
