Best CS.GO underdog story?
 |
Iceland ban1c
What is the best underdog story in CS:GO history? a recent example of an underdog story is Ence in the Katowice Major 2019.

yes but no, almost every underdog story is usually because of other teams fucking up bigtime. ence at the major only got far because liquid choked so bad in the quarter finals and lost the game vs themselves. qbf only got so far because mouz choked so fucking hard on train after 13-2 lead

Qf pretty much have that only win against one good team. Ence had to start from zero going to the major, ence where two rounds away from losing and not making it futher, and ence had to play navi with at the time the best player in the world was hard carrying them
2020-02-02 07:20
ENCE #2 C9 Boston #1. C9 was down 0-2 in bo1 Swiss, best vp, #3 astralis, and Vega in groups. They then 2-0 #4 g2 who hadn’t lost a single map that tourney, then beat #2 sk, and come back from 15-11 in the final map of the grand final after losing at least 4 bo3 to faze in the last 4 months.

Well everyone knew c9 had the chance to make it, roster full with known players, at the major other teams said that they had no idea who 4 of ences players where
2020-02-02 07:50
c9 had 4 players who had never made it to a major playoff appearance and skadoodle notoriously had failed to make playoffs after 8 tries.

Mouz a top 8 team with a historic IGL and some of the best young talent in the scene winning a big event after picking up steam in smaller events is not a fluke.
2020-02-02 00:49
its not a fluke, its just amazing, a good underdog story. mainly the impressive comeback on dust 2 vs astralis from 8-14. That was magical.
2020-02-02 02:03
#135
ZywOo |
South Africa nimmaJ
Yeah that's another thing tho. Flukes dont usually involve comebacks or beating other teams playing at a high level. Take C9s playoff run, G2 played like dirt and Faze got progressively worse thru the series, even looking jittery in OT. Mouz faced fnatic and Astralis playing at an elite level and bested them.

Coming through the minor, Rounds away from being defeated 0-3 at the main stage, getting through 3-2, going on to beating the #2 and #3 team in a bo3 before making a more competetive grand final against GOAT team than navi at the previous major ever came close to

that dreamhack event when Luminosity got 16-0'd in their opening match against fnatic. but then fought back all the way and destroyed every teams in the playoffs in bo3's. that was amazing. edit: they did lose the grandfinal final eventually, but I believe after this they never looked back went on to win the majors back to back. what made it special was they were known for only being best of 1 specialists, never considered a contender
2020-01-27 14:41
It was the FACEIT finals, first tournament of the new line up, they didn't practice once, all they did was review some demos during the flight and when they arrived hltv.org/matches/2299503/fnatic-vs-lumin.. hltv.org/news/16470/luminosity-to-change.. youtu.be/a-up5J4tIuI I remember Thoorin saying so much shit about them after the L against fnatic.. that was memorable tbh

Yeah it was just a process. Just like any new team takes. No matter how much talent you have it's the intricacies and coordination that win tournaments and they had progressively been getting better each tournament. If people would remeber they made top 4 at EPL 9 Finals, all they did is win 2 more bo3s this time. This doesnt come close to Qbf, gambit, or C9
2020-02-02 00:52
I can only agree with you

C9 was #5 with 395 points Mouz was #8 with 429 points Context Matters Not to mention this was C9s most recent match (previous tournament) vs Faze hltv.org/stats/matches/51573/faze-vs-clo.. Mouz had already beaten Fnatic throughout the year and placed top 4 at the previous EPL, not to mention they have 2 top 15 players and who some consider the best IGL based on his ability to adapt. On top of the fact that C9 core had been together for going on two years, their result was much more random as it seemed like we had already seen their full potential. Mouz had been getting progressively better all year, consistently beating teams like EG and Faze and having really close series with Liquid and Fnatic.

Actually got an headache from the amount of nonsense replies I've read in this thread so here's my honest opinion. 1. Cloud9 - Boston 2. LG - Columbus 3. Gambit - Krakow Cloud9 major run was nothing short of incredible. They defeated 3 of the main contenders for the major title on the quarters, semis and grand-final without even being considered a contender themselves. Nobody expected them to go that far, let alone win the whole thing in home soil. LG was already known in the scenario but they went above and beyond in MLG Columbus 2016. People were starting to think this team could do some damage to top 5 teams given how stacked the scene was at that time, very few people actually believed they could be the winners and they surprised the world in that regard. Gambit as third because similarly to Cloud9 they were out of the equation for the major title, with the difference that C9 actually defeated 3 of the favourites while Gambit got to play against teams of their tier up until the semi-finals where they beat Astralis, which I assume, spent most of their bootcamp working on an anti-strat against SK at that time. Nonetheless crazy run.

I think this calls for a poll.
2020-02-02 22:11
I think C9 in EPL season 4 when everyone was thinking about SK big winning moment in home soil and then weird NA team won an amazing play-offs. And ofc eleague major c9 win. Maybe Optic eleague season 2 have an underdog winner
2020-02-02 22:12
It depends. Major championship run - C9 Major underdog run - ENCE, Avangar Championship run (not major) - EPL Mouz

seems to be the general consensus.

1. C9 Boston 2. HR Acer Predator s1
2020-02-02 22:15
gambit and immortals at krakow, c9 at boston i might get killed over this but liquid at esl one cologne 2016. s1mple was just standing in and they upset both fnatic and navi, definitely a larger upset than ence imo considering the circumstances

unique mention of liquid. thats maybe not as impressive as the tiny teams that had fluke runs, Liquid was always respected and had strong games.
2020-02-02 23:04
i don’t think liquid had much respect when it came to closing games, cough cough mlg colombus but i think ppl really underrate that one because sk brutalized them so hard that the underdog story got covered up by the back to back majors that the lg/sk core just won

So many people are posting decent examples like Ence or Gambit. They certainly are underdog stories, but against the competition they faced? That's hardly the best. C9 is the only one I can think of. A masterclass performance against many teams that looked amazing coming into that tournament.
2020-02-04 02:40
ence played against liquid, navi, others to be fair.

Gambit were ranked 14th C9 were ranked 5th Not to mention it's the combination of Gambit AND immortals two non top-8 teams making the same grand finals of a major. Gambit only faced teams higher ranked than them besides VP who was 4 points behind (190 vs 186). Beat Astralis who thrashed the #1 in the world SK.
