regressive tax
SolEk |
United Kingdom Nik0l4yy
Currently we have these tax rates: Basic rate £12,501 to £50,000 20% Higher rate £50,001 to £150,000 40% Additional rate over £150,000 45% I think the tax rates should decrease as you earn more, and look something like: Basic rate £12,501 to £50,000 20% Higher rate £50,001 to £150,000 10% Additional rate over £150,000 5% Rich people will still contribute a lot more. But they will keep a larger portion of their income. Regressive tax has many benefits, most importantly it incentivizes people to work hard and reach upper class. As a result there will be more high earners, paying more taxes and also contributing to the economy. Less people will avoid/evade taxes, this also increases income tax revenue for the government. There's also a moral debate, why should someone who works 100 times harder should give away 45% of their income, this can hundreds of thousands. Whilst some lazy bastard will only pay a few thousand to nothing in taxes! But they both get the same services from the government. The only downside is that these poor useless suckers are so used to wealthy people paying for their benefits that they feel entitled. Labour party will spread disinformation and lies to try to convince people that regressive tax is bad, and they might come to power and reintroduce "progressive" tax rates.

Richest half pays what, something like 80-90 percent of all taxes. Yeah just flip that over and you'll have perfectly functioning society. But good thing if you're learning, you just need to do that a lot more to get even the basic grasp of the subject.

"work 100 times harder" nah bro that's not how jobs work. you aren't paid based on difficulty, you're paid based on skills required. being an anesthesiologist isn't a physically taxing job - most of the surgery you're just sitting there - it just requires a lot of training and memorization. yeah the training is probably difficult - but is 3 years of reading and learning really harder than, say, 20 years of farm work?

everyone gets free education here. And has to stay in education until the age of 18. It doesn't matter if your family is poor, you can still go to Oxford or any uni, and get a well paying job.

omg you are stupid, let me explain to your small brain why not everyone can finish uni. If you have any disabilities, accidents anf if you are poor you will go to uni and eat air? I know smbd, he was a great student and would finish uni and get a well paying job, then his father died and he had to quit uni and went to work to provide for his family, another example i know is he was going to vet uni, again well paid job, then his brother committed suicide and he had to quit uni to take on his family farm. And there are a lot of examples like that some people aren't fortunate enough to go or to finish uni...

That right there is your unintentional bait. Perhaps anyone CAN do that, but not EVERY person. In fact, there's gotta be less than 10% of jobs where that's possible. By sheer numerical fact, the vast majority of people are excluded from incredible success - that's the defining point of what's considered rich and poor. That being said, I'm a supporter of flat tax. The same rate for all - just contribute to the state's essential services directly proportionally to your own economic benefit. It's fair by definition, and doesn't punish people for earning more.

nobody is excluded from success. People just choose wrong paths in life. Yes flat tax doesn't punish you for earning more, but it also doesn't incentivise people to earn more.

this is one of the worst ideas ive seen, it makes poorer people poorer and the rich richer, equity is better than equality (sometimes they align), if i had 20 dollars and someone had 2000 dollars, and i gave you 10 dollars while the other guy gave you 100, youd be happier with the 100, but i only had 20 so i couldnt give you 100, So why should they pay less when they have more? because the poor people wont reach the 10% and 5% youre asking for, cause the rich keep their money and it doesnt go back into helping the poor people

Rich people will still pay a lot more than the poor do. And rich people, they don't steal from the poor. They CREATE wealth, that wouldn't have been created if not for them. We need more people that will create wealth. Everyone benefits.

2020-02-19 04:00
equalitytrust.org.uk/scale-economic-ineq.. A quick google search told me that 63% of your country's income came from people earning ~50k or more. Even without doing any in-depth math, at least 63% of your taxes come from these people and you want to decrease this to 1/4 or less so your country has AT MOST 53% (37+16) of the money it currently receives from taxes. Reported for baiting.

2020-02-19 11:33
I see where you come from but I don't think it'd work in the short term. In the long term it might pay off and lure some millionaires to your country and boost the economy but it would also force the lower classes to pay a lot more tax. I think taxing companies more and people less would have a similar effect but not hurt the poorer people as much.
2020-02-19 17:09
Just no. The government barely gets enough money as it is and you think this shit is a good idea? Do you know how tax works?

Even if this is a bait, a lot of people actually believe this so I'll give a proper response. People don't earn in line with how hard they work. Richer families can afford to move to areas with better schooling, pay for tutoring/private schools etc. Regressive taxes keep poor people in poverty - it takes more than just 'hard work' to pay for university, pay for accomodation while you're at university, move to an area with better job prospects etc. They don't make more people rich, they make rich people richer. These are very different things. Since you talk about morality - why should someone who earns less and has to live paycheck to paycheck because of it pay more than or even the same amount as someone who lives comfortably? For the richer person, they'd hardly even notice whereas for a poorer person that same amount could be enough to put them on the street or lock them into poverty forever.
