in school or what? i'm pretty sure i would have been able to speak it fluently at this point if they hadn't forced me to do 6 years of strict grammar practice. fuck that shit

no, as far as i know swedes focus 100% only in english(as second language) but german is the third most spoken language *EDIT: confirmed by wiki English (86%),[2] German (30%), French (11%)

nah, we're taught either french, spanish or german for 4-7 years as well. up until like 30 years ago french and german were mandatory and spanish wasn't an option, nowadays however spanish is chosen and studied by a majority of swedish high school students

not the point. it's a huge waste of time and no efficient way to learn a language. i've literally never paid attention to any english grammar i've been taught (or swedish for that matter) in my life yet i still feel like i can handle it quite well. i'm 99% sure i'd learn more german living in germany for six weeks months than i did studying german grammar for six years

Well you might be right. The grammar-oriented way languages are sometimes taught is quite bad. Best way to learn is to use the language and emphasising the importance of grammar doesn't encourage to use it very much as you're just focusing to the grammar. I've always thought that your grammar can be all over the place as long as you are understood. And if I reflect this to my native language: sure indeed, I understand pretty fucking bad Finnish. But hey good thing is that it's not always like that. In uni my Swedish teacher straight up said that he don't give a fuck if our grammar sucks as long as he can understand. After all the goal is to learn to communicate, not to become a language teacher...

no, 100% by myself, i'm 25yo and i'm not in school anymore, in brazil you don't even learn basic english at school, i mean, the subject is there but the education is poor and vague

ok good luck. obviously i spoke most major germanic languages to some extent before i even began to study german so i'd imagine it's going to be harder for you. still if you put in work it shouldn't be harder than any other language really

There is no reason to be scared of the big words. They are just words combined out of 2 or 3 words. (example: Gerichtsbeschluss = order (Beschluss) of the court (Gericht)) It's really not complex at all. The grammar is the only reason german might prove difficult to learn.

Ders dems and einers doesn't exist. It depends on the context if it's a big thing I guess.

- Munich - German language There are some really hard accents here, espacially in bavaria region. But the grammar is the most difficult in german language. I wish you the best of luck.

Long words are just basically several small words put together, don't be afraid. After a time, you'll get them easily.

it is difficult, many germans cant even speak german well tbh :D But I learned russian, thats a whole new lvl, so I can feel you learning such a language. Those long words are mostly like two or three words put together. They may seem difficult, but if you see those words on their own, that were put together in the long word, it makes sense.
