I don't know too much about cheating detection, but you may attract a bit too much attention if you make "astonishing plays" all the time, on a regular basis show some ridiculous performance stats etc.
If you these stats online/on your own gear and fall short on gear provided by various tournament organizers, you would atrract some attention as well in the long run, wouldn't you?
I'm a chessplayer myself, and we of course - every now and then - encounter this problem as well, but these guys/accounts get banned fairly fast by providing "top engine moves" a bit too often.
So: At the top level cheating is easily detected, at lower levels the resources for doing so may be limited but in the long run, you don't get very far.
The criminal mind put restraints on itself: It doesn't get you very far in life.
