So.. What you are implying here is that if a test is online, people will automatically boost their score by making some research online while doing the test? Therefore all online tests are dumb, did I get it right? A test is a personal evaluation (whether it is online). If people take it as a way to feed their ego or pretend to be someone they are not, it's their problem, they didn't get the purpose of it all. Anyhow, the test is for everyone, whatever level they have so indeed, the first questions are quite simple in order to increase gradually, step by step, depending on your level and the mistakes you made or didn't make.

2020-04-08 14:32
I never implied that people look up results. It's more about the ego part. Wasting your time on this useless test that holds no value at all just to show someone or yourself how "smart" you are. All while the questions are really basic stuff – you are not going to have to write an essay or do full reading or audio comprehension in these tests. I guess me making fun of this is also about ego and wasting time, but whatever.

there were multiple questions where two or more answers were absolutely acceptable. for example, "There is too much traffic in Bangkok" and "there is plenty of traffic in Bangkok" are both perfectly acceptable sentences depending on context. once you get above a 90 it doesnt really mean anything. -native english speaker
2020-04-08 18:23

United States yghj
im telling you that both work depending on context. heres context that would make it very clear that "plenty of" works. im sure youll be able to see. "'Despite our best attempts, they might still make it to the airport.' " "'Don't worry,' she said, 'There's plenty of traffic in Bangkok.'" in this context "'Don't worry,' she said, 'There's TOO MUCH traffic in Bangkok.'" doesn't make much sense. Plenty of does make sense. without context in the test you were supposed to assume that traffic was a negative thing. This is not always the case.

What about the Egyptian artefact one? Can't a work of art be both invaluable and priceless? definition of invaluable: extremely useful; indispensable. definition of priceless: so precious that its value cannot be determined. Obviously "priceless" fits the context better, but would it really be wrong to say that an artefact is invaluable? For example, it could be invaluable to archaeologists.

priceless was the correct answer but yes there is a fairly easy argument fro invaluable. the rosetta stone, for example, was invaluable. thats the first egyptian artifact i thought of and it fits. this is exactly why this quiz was flawed. several things were just not objectively wrong.
2020-04-10 16:35
i agree with you
2020-04-10 17:50
Wow, brother. I saw some examples with two answer that could be appliable as well. And i thought "wtf which one of these two fits the best? sounds the better?" That's fucked up, i'm gonna trust you.

Hear my advice isn't really gramatically correct I don't think. It wouldn't be hear it would be "you should "listen to" my advice" Though it may work if someone said "Have you heard ProvexPyker's advice? you would never say "you should hear my advice" in your daily life. you would only ever say "you should take my advice" conversely, where you would say "I wish I studied more at college" in a conversation with your friends, according to grammar rules, the correct option is "I wish I had studied more at college"
2020-04-08 01:54
they're both right. i'd personally choose take. and the second one, 3 options are correct. would have studied, had studied, and studied all work equally well

not really. as i said in another comment, at least 2-3 questions had multiple answers that would be acceptable depending on context. for example, the question about bangkok had "There is plenty of traffic in bangkok" or "There is too much traffic in bangkok". both of these are correct grammatically and sound correct. you said either of these sentences and no english speaker would bat an eye. from what i reckon anywhere from a 92 or 94 to 100% are the same

To be fair, there is like 2 or 3 questions that would actually work in spoken English. Though you wouldn't put them in an English essay. English people speaking English is usually not gramatically correct unless you're the queen xd

there is no context in a single sentence that would have told you which to choose. a 94% could be a perfect score as well considering there are at least 3 questions that have multiple answers. source - college educated native english speaker and college educated roommate.
2020-04-08 18:32
yea I hope so because I feel pretty confident in English yet I only scored 84%.. r u native?

>source - college educated native english speaker and college educated roommate. yes. native. there were only about 3 that could be answered in several ways. at 2% per question a 94% could still potentially be a perfect score. an 84% means you got 4-5 wrong at least, possibly up to 8 wrong. if you want to know why the ones you got wrong were incorrect you can ask me, ill tell you.

"Plenty of" is used for a lot of a good thing. "Too much" is a lot of a bad thing. Maybe I'm wording it wrong. It's like "too much" has a more negative meaning. So the answer should be "too much traffic." You would use "plenty of" for a situation rn. We have plenty of toilet paper. You wouldn't say too much because having toilet paper is a good thing.
2020-04-07 23:50

back in the day all of "in", "on" and "at" went together with "fluent" when I was in middle school even tho I'm pretty sure I say "fluent in" or "fluent at" in the vast majority of cases but if you say so, alright my man

Some of the questions were planned so the incorrect answers were only very slightly incorrect. Sometimes even to the point wherein modern spoken English, there doesn't even seem to be an error. For example, did you spot the difference between advice and advise. Sure, there were questions for which multiple of the answers would have got your point across more than well enough, but they were there to test your absolute grammatical understanding. Not your communication skills in practice. Just because one can speak English fluently doesn't mean their grammar is spot on. Just look at uneducated native speakers spelling bon appétit as bone apple tea or mixing up they're, there and their. Your English is probably excellent and you can express yourself about as well as you can in your native language but that's not all that was tested in the test. It's very hard to get a perfect score from the test if you're not a native speaker. I got 98% and I haven't got a clue where I made the mistake.

i would say "do you have the time" instead of "have you got the time". on 41 I would say "like" more than any of the given choices. on 46 i would say "gets along with" more than the choices. 49 is weird as "plenty of" and "too much" are both correct depending on the context. also in 45 "advising" could be correct depending on the context

it actually does if you are using that phrase in a horror movie lel, like a vampire popping out of nowhere

the correct answer is can't. the hint is in the "almost midnight", the "now" and the exclamation mark. i agree with you that might not makes sense in some contexts but nobody would ever use mightn't unironically. it's just not a contraction people use.
2020-04-08 03:24
And why exactly is "can" and "mustn't" incorrect?
2020-04-08 21:30
can is just wrong in context and mustn't is wrong for the same reason mightn't is

Can a captain see if my answers were correct in the situations below? It looked like the were some dubious answers... Q11: My parents _________ married since 1985. have been got are were A: I've answered "have been". Is "are" wrong, though? Q12: Hurry up or we'll _________ our train! fail lose miss catch A: I've answered "miss". Is "lose" wrong, thuogh? Q22: What is this _________ in English? I can't remember. named said spoken called A: I've answered "named". But what about "said"? Q34: There's _________ in applying for the job. I'm not qualified for it. no chance no point no worth no reason A: I've answered "no reason". What about "no chance" and "no point"? Q41: It looks _________ it's going to rain. as like alike as as if A: I've answered "as like". I really don't know if "as if" is correct (or other answer), though.
2020-04-07 22:13
"are" is wrong, you usually use the present perfect with "since" or "for" "said" is just grammatically incorrect Q12 It's miss because you usually miss an event, a trip, a train, a plane, an opportunity etc whereas you lose an object, a thing or a game Q34 It's no point Q41 as if It looks like it's going to rain would be correct, but not "as like"

11 Could be all but got. My parents have been married since 1985 and are still married. My parents are married since 1985 and still together. My parents were married since 1985 but divorced a few years ago. 12 can be lose or miss, there's no right answer between the two. 22 is usually called, but if it is a noun named would be proper. 34 No chance is incorrect as it's applying for it, not getting accepted. It could be no point, no worth or no reason, all three of those are correct. 41 can be as as like, as if or even as but the latter is more of a colloquialism.
2020-04-08 03:04

Wanna explain how I'm wrong maybe? Lose is a synonym of miss. "Because of him we were to lose our train" The Railway Children And 41 isn't wrong either "It looks as like Priestcraft as any thing in the World could do." - Mystery of Godliness Considered in LXI Sermons Wherein the Deity of Christ is Prov'd Upon No Other Evidence Than the Word of God and with No Other View Than the Salvation of Men: Volume 1, Thomas Bradbury books.google.co.jp/books?id=uLgsAAAAYAAJ..
2020-04-08 10:12
lose is not a synonym of miss. they both have entirely different meanings. it may make sense in other contexts but it's not the case here. and you can't look at literature for rules of grammar because writers often bend the rules for effect, especially in speech.

The correct answer is ''mustn't'' though
2020-04-08 01:21
can't He can't be coming now! Mustn't sounds right but that's not a real contraction. I think the test is kind of pointless as instead of testing literacy and speaking adequacy it tests logic, which is less important in determining someone's language skills.
2020-04-08 01:20
''It's almost midnight, he must not be coming now!''. Mustn't is correct, but I agree that this test is dumb. The pointless exclamation mark throws you off aswell lol
2020-04-08 01:23
Oh actually you are right, it makes no sense though because you could use can't or mustn't interchangeably and therefore I didn't think that was a proper word.
2020-04-08 01:26
They cannot be used interchangeably. Think of it like ''I can't fly here'', vs ''I mustn't fly here''. Only the ''mustn't'' example implies you're actually capable of flight. Another example is: ''I can't take a shit here''. This implies you're incapable of taking a shit there, while ''mustn't'' strictly says you are capable, but you shouldn't.
2020-04-08 01:34
No one uses ''mustn't'' anymore though, saying ''can't'' is 100% grammatically correct.
2020-04-08 01:42
Well no, think of it as angry mother saying: ''It's almost midnight, he can't be coming now!'' I feel like that it's purely a best fit and best logic scenario.

Mustn't is a real contraction but it makes little sense in this sentence unless there is some sort of curfew/blockade put up at midnight that would forbid him from coming. "Now, listen," said Mother; "it's quite true that we're poor, but we have enough to live on. You mustn't go telling everyone about our affairs--it's not right. And you must never, never, never ask strangers to give you things. Now always remember that--won't you?"
2020-04-08 02:59
dont worry about it, this test has about 10 questions which are posed in a way that doesnt make sense to anyone, native speaker or not.

It can't be mustn't though, mustn't makes 0 sense unless it's a super specific scenario like there being a curfew/lockdown It's a negative auxiliary that's used to indicate something forbidden or not allowed, I don't see why he mustn't be allowed to return home after midnight if the time has already passed, unless there is a ban on it? But can't would fit better in most scenarios.

it's dumb easy. You can master english in a year since the structure of the language is rigid (limited amount of sentence form rules) and modern, next to academic vocabulary isn't that large either. ps I got 7.5 (max 9) in academic IELTS while my 1.5 month preparation consisted of casual exercises.

I think it was "there is too much traffic in Bangkok" because "plenty of" which usually goes hand in hand with something positive(not my analysis, someone else said it in this thread credit to him), plus if it were negative it would sound sort of off "There isn't plenty of traffic in Bangkok". As for "He _ be coming now" it is can't.

I moved to the UK when I was quite young and stayed there for 5 years; and I only spoke French at home, so I would say my English, although slightly "americanized"(mainly due to watching a lot of American stuff on the internet and I just like the American pronunciation and spelling of certain words over the British) and rusty nowadays from a lack of real practice, is still at near-native if not native level. Anyways, I only got 92% the first time I took the test. In the end of this makes me realize that my English is rusty as hell.

Wouldn't (would not). It would be "I couldn't start the car this morning".

Good question. Yes, because saying "the car couldn't start this morning" is implying that the car can normally start on its own. Another example: "The computer wouldn't turn on" not "The computer couldn't turn on"
