Uh, what? People press more with barbells than dumbbells because dumbbells force even load distribution and are harder on stabilizers. Exercises are just about forcing your muscles to carry a difficult load, whether you use a machine, barbell or dumbbells is irrelevant. You can work with angles and switch to harder exercises. Just get dumbbells and a bench, take your sets close to failure, and you'll maintain your muscle unless you're Ronnie Coleman, which I highly doubt you are considering you think dumbbells are ineffective..

First of all, saying something isn't AS effective as something else, doesn't necessarily make it ineffective. Say u get 45lbs dumbells and do sets to failure, right. That is not AS good as a gym filled with not only more dumbbells but also machines and barbells which u can load up with more weight. Tell me, which will result in more hypertrophy? 45lbs DB bench 3 sets to failure or 225 BB bench 3 sets to failure THEN 45lbs DB incline bench to failure And yes, you can do more than just DB bench, but i hope ur brain isn't smooth enough to not understand the point? This applies to legs and back even more. 405lbs squat for like 3 set for example 3sets of Legpress to failure OR 90lbs lunges for like 3 sets to failure. What I am saying in a nutshell is, the difference in workload is too big to just change and expect to keep everything.

You don't need nearly as much volume to maintain muscle as you need to build it. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21131862 In that study even 10% of the original volume was sufficient to preserve muscle. You don't need to continue the same workload, you just need to ensure some stimulation occurs so that your body 'knows' the muscle is still being used and shouldn't be broken down for energy. Taking lighter sets to failure has been shown to produce similar hypertrophic results. You just need to be using at least 30% of your ORM, and even that limit may be because it's just tedious to take even lighter sets than that to failure and people just don't bother. In general, if you're going to true failure, the muscle fibers will be damaged and will grow. The main problem with a lack of gym is it'll be very difficult to increase strength. Muscle mass can be maintained.

The whole point is that lockdown prevents people from going to the gym. It's obviously not ideal. Unless you're a highly advanced lifter, you can still make gains using dumbbells. And even advanced lifters should be able to just about maintain their mass with dumbbells and home workouts.

They dont help as soon as you learned how to ride. At that point they are hindering you more than they help. The machines in gyms are specifically designed to be as efficient for progression as possible, meaning it is comparably easier to efficiently build up muscles with them than from home with calisthenic exercises or low budget machines. I dont go to gym because I consider it a waste of money, but if you have the money to spare, they are more efficient imo
