HK to get UK citizenship?
 |
United States MidwestCalifornian
telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/06/03/boris-jo.. What are your opinions on this? I think it's a good thing to try to protect the people of HK and I admire the thought, but I have to wonder how China and anti-immigrant folks in the UK will respond.

So the UK is openly admitting to supporting these rioters, or atleast giving them some sort of sponsorship. Wouldn't this be considered foreign Interference? (Isn't the US also doing this?)

? Most cafeterias do though. They just taste kind of bad. And properous for all their citizens is a bold statement. Taiwan and Hongkong both have their issues. HongKong especially has an issue for the price of housing as it's the most expensive market. Many people really can't afford housing. And chinas economy has been booming recently (minus this and last year) and people are able to live a good life. And by killing minorities you mean the Muslims? So you believe everything that the media tells you?

This could be an incentive for more people to start protesting and commit crimes as they have an easy escape route. The US I'm pretty sure will also give citizenship to anyone arrested on protesting related charges. They aren't directly supporting the rebels, ( I'm not going to go into the stuff behind the scenes and politics, so I'll leave it at that) but they do offer enough support to convince people to riot. Hence, why I said indirectly. Edit: It might just be the UK actually. I think I misread an article.

So People of Hong Kong have different personal identity and culture. That Just shows that region must be independent to keep stable.,the escape route wont even work as china has huge influenced over hk but let me remind you hk was British colony and it was later given to china under conditions if one country two systems would be respected but it looks like china coldwar ussr direction
2020-06-03 09:01
Just leave hongkong alone and there won't be protests. Hongkong is a great place and I'm sure 99% of people there want to stay. But china is the #1 worst offender against human rights, and they don't want to live under that system

 |
China SwooksarV2
Why would China leave Hongkong alone? Leave it alone so it drifts further away and become a potential enemy or obstacle in the future? The two only options would be to merge Hongkong with the mainland or "destroy"/abandon it. Hongkong itself brings too many benefits, which is why Shenzhen is being developed the way it is. To become the new Hongkong, but without the interference and culture of western countries. The Hongkong passport will probably cease to exist in a few years. Yes, I agree HongKong is a great place. A beautiful city with many business opportunities. But no matter how pretty, if it becomes a thorn, it needs to be disposed of. And, the system is completely fine as long as you don't break laws or go against the country. It's a pity, but there's only the bad agreement that was made 25 years ago to blame.
2020-06-03 11:13
You don't need to destroy hong Kong any more than you need to destroy korea or usa or norway. And why wouldn't people be against the #1 worst regime in human history? The ccp makes the Nazi party seem like human rights activists

The USA is still far too powerful for the CCP to handle. However, Hongkong is like a way for the US and Britian to gain some control or influence over China. Many of Hobgkong government officials are British. What has the CCP done exactly to be considered the worst regime?
2020-06-03 11:20
What the nazis did in 1944, put people of a certain religion in concentration camps and kill them is what ccp are doing today. If you look through the history, no government has killed more of its own people than ccp

There are more solutions than those two options. Åland is a Finnish autonomous region, and so are the Faroe Islands in the Kingdom of Denmark. There is no need to annex, subjugate an area that clearly wishes to remain independent. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%85land_Islands en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faroe_Islands
2020-06-03 11:37
Still, it is an agreement, and even if it hurts China now. they have to take it like a man.

China SwooksarV2
I haven't really payed attention to what's happening in Hongkong recently. But my original threads from last year talked about the whole situation. To sum it up, I'm perfectly fine with people protesting, and I understand why they would do so. Just don't protest by destroying your city and by inconveniencing others from their daily life. Most protestors are students (really like what happened during 6-4. The HK protests shared many similarities) and then destroying the work that their parents and grandparents done was what really pissed me off. (Also the protest was lead by a guy who wasn't even chinese, or from Hongkong originally)
2020-06-03 10:23
The Tiananmen protesters mostly got exactly what they wanted, so why were they in the wrong? It's china who were in the wrong by killing 10k students

China SwooksarV2
Those numbers are false fyi. Tienanmen protesters got what they wanted? Sure, they protested because if the "poor economy" and "dissatisfaction" with the government ,and they got the stronger economy they wished for, but it really wasn't because of the protests. If anything, the protests was just a good attempt to stir up chaos within China and cause civil unrest.
2020-06-03 11:17
Those numbers are correct. According to the ccp, the Tiananmen square massacre never happened, and yet we have video evidence. The video evidence is probably only a tiny fraction of what happened, as people didn't carry cameras back then. So who should I trust, the ccp or historians?

Ah yes. Historians from the west. Surely they aren't painting the opposing country in a bad light. You can trust someone who actually was there when the "massacre" happened. Such as my grandmother. And, how convienent is it for those who stirred up the protests behind the scene to have been given visas to the USA and fled there?

 |
China SwooksarV2
The "massacre" indeed happened, but no where to the scale of what historians claim.
2020-06-03 11:24
Western historians don't have opposing countries, this is your mentality. I'm not opposed to China, in fact my respect for the Chinese people is why I'm opposed to the ccp. I hope Chinese people can experience freedom in their lifetime. Who do you think comes to the Tiananmen square every year at the day of the massacre to arrest any grieving parents who dares lay down flowers for the students killed by the Chinese military? Is it western historians?

He? In what way or form is a government interfering in foreign affairs by giving people of some nation a chance to acquire it's citizenship? I mean it's not even reallya foreign policy, and if you didn't notice, countries do have foreign policies. Besides, it's not like all other countries don't interfere in other regions as well, and China is surely no stranger in that.

It can be seen as both good and bad. One side, you can say that those dissatisfied can leave the country, so HK will become much more peaceful in the future, but on the other side it also in a way encourages more people to start rioting because of the escape route. And less riots = good. More riots = bad.

Hmmmm it seems like the US has a really unhealthy atmosphere in multiple different senses. Race relations (everything’s always about race), huge disparity between poor and upper class people, more violent crime and many Americans have been tricked into becoming uneducated maniacs due to misinformation by the media. Honestly I wouldn’t if I were you, but that’s just my opinion

I go to the US once every few months. And I've been to the UK twice, for around a week total. I personally prefer US over the UK but the UK isn't bad, and I understand why a lot of people live there (especially chinese). I just don't like, or I'm not a fan of the customs there. (More like not used to it). My "soo much better" was exaggerated, so sorry about that. I'm just not a big fan of the "feel" of the UK. But I guess Hongkong is a lot more similar to the UK.

That's fair - no worries. I think the UK is probably a more stable place to live (lower crime, better public services etc), but if you have money the US, particularly the West Coast, is a great place to live. There's just a massive disparity between the haves and have nots (that said, from UK perspective, most Chinese students etc are quite wealthy so maybe the US would be better)

Chinese are very good at business and it is easy to do business in China, low regulations But Chinese are really rich at any country they go to and make business
2020-06-03 14:50
You miss the fact that mainland China has about 1.5 bill people. Obviously there are a lot of rich families among the hoards of poor people. Most likely you're not gonna send your kid abroad unless you have some kind of funds that would make it worth it.

Ye what #144 said. Most families aren't that wealthy, but sending your kids aboard takes a lot of money. For me, tuition was around 50K cad a semester for University and around 40k cad a year for highschool. (I went private so it was more expensive, but it's still pretty high for public) plus housing and other costs, it can be pretty expensive. Thus, only those who are a from a family that's decently wealthy can go study abroad. However, there are cases where students get scholarships and those who take out loans in hope of return in the future, but they're a bit more rare.

You can't judge a country or region based on a few weeks. I have lived about nine different places in Denmark and it can be so random why I get to hate one city compared to another one. When I moved to the second largest city I utterly hated it. The people there, the infrastructure and what have you. I decided to move out after a year. I lived in the northern part of the city, but had I lived in the southern part with different neighbors, or in another type of house, I might have loved it. I've moved a round a lot in the same city to experience different flavors and your perception of a city can be altered dramatically by doing so. Within a city you'll find a stark contrast in people's mentalities. Now enlarge it to a regional level, and you begin to understand why people can develop so different outlooks on how it is to live in a certain country. Every country has wonderful and terrible areas depending on one's personal preferences. It's a matter of finding it.

Nah foreign intervention is when you support the rebels, not give them citzenship also u seem to forget that Hongkong was British for almost 200y. People are not happy about your nation wich attack taiwan and lets be honest Hongkong should be independent. let me Tell you why first Hongkong has different history than china, Hong Kong has its personal identity when you look at it ww2 started around free danzig city influenced by germans.
2020-06-03 08:07
Hong kong belonged to the UK for almost 200y, how is that matter? You are saying that Hong Kong should be independent but how? They don't have military forces, lack of natural resources, and they don't have amazing tourist attractions, and I think they get some water & electrical supply from mainland China as well. How can they survive as a country

????????????????????????????????????????? You don't need factories in your country imo. I've saw that some countries are having factories in foreign countries and they are getting money from that and production lmfao they only pay taxes.
2020-06-03 14:13
That's a finance city, which is what HK already is, and the manufacturer is mainland China
2020-06-03 15:02
They can't become a manufacturer because they don't have enough land for factories. I would say the situation of Hong Kong is similar to Singapore but Singapore invested a lot in developing new technology and the government gets to use almost all the land while that is not the case in Hong Kong.
2020-06-03 16:10
Are you insane? HK got a LOT of land they could use for manufacturing if they wanted. Have you ever seen HK on a satellite map? Do you see how dense everything is with shitload of area unused?
2020-06-03 18:47
Actually I been to HK many times, government cannot even get the ability to build housing on new territories and can't on country parks Even with that the land is nowhere near that like Taiwan has
2020-06-03 18:53
The gov will be forced to use some of the park areas. Our density makes 0 sense. Like 90% of our land is untouched.
2020-06-03 19:01
There are not a lot of countries that are doing well without china. They might be maintaining their country but definitely not improving if they are not working closely with China. Taiwan is almost the same as they are 10years ago, not a lot of improvements/ remarkable achievement and it is only matters of time until China reunite everything.
2020-06-03 16:14
Hk alone is a lot more worth than China for the west economic. It was the trade place nr 1 in Asia.

Owned Poland Prussia for 150years? only western part dafuq where is historical, geography knowledge. Russia occupied biggest part. Austria-Hungary did too Mainly due collapse of the economy and gouvernament in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth huge part of it played by the Deluge (Swedish Invasion of Poland). Because our king escaped commonwealth cuz failed to do reforms.
2020-06-03 13:31
then u see it. its cultural difference. for our country the concept of nationalism is very strong. however good or strong invader is, it is unacceptable. that's why normal chinese think those in hk who love uk is stupid because uk is invader in 1850. Such a small town mentality, yes UK cities have their rough parts but they’re great places to live and visit. I’ve lived in Newcastle which has such an amazing party culture, lots of bars, clubs really good good restaurants. Very historic town centre and very compact city so you can walk everywhere. I’ve lived in Birmingham, it gets a bad rep but it’s actually very nice, granted there are some very dodgy areas. The people are very friendly, city centre has been modernised recently, there’s a lot of green parks nice bars and restaurants.

Letting the people who hold BNO passport stay longer in the country is not equivalent to giving the citizenship. Getting UK citizenship is difficult and expensive. I know people who stay and work at UK for 7years but still cant get a UK passport
2020-06-04 12:44
Foreign minister says what you are saying to MPs and says Boris' opinion could become a reality Boris' opinion is the expansion of the Visa to give longer to permanent stays, expanding the BNO to all Hong Kongers and making it easier to stay. Also Hong Kongers on the most part can afford it, as its becoming easier with new immigration rules regarding highly skilled workers. Im not saying its easy or cheap right now, im saying our Prime Minister has pledged his intention to make it cheaper, easier and more widespread.

I am very sorry , but I despise your government , I consider the Chinese people a brotherly nation (not that relations make a single fucking difference) , China is not a poor/ugly country by any means. Your cities are some of the prettiest that I wish to visit one day. I say the word shithole because totalitarian maniacs are ruling your country , slaughtering Uighurs , not to mention the lack of freedom of speech ... But that's simply how it is , nothing can be done about it , we have to bend to your will and in the future , Serbs will be scattered around Europe and NA while Serbia will just be another province of China - this will be the case for many countries (this is the sad truth that nobody wants to accept) There is no love between the countries themselves , only (mainly Chinese) interests. I love you though brotha <3

2020-06-04 08:11
The Chinese people we have here are not really disrespectful. Especially in comparison to other foreigners such as Middle Easterners. Whilst we would prefer not to have millions and millions of Chinese people coming here and changing our culture, the long and short of it is these people are a big contribution to economy and society. The same goes for people from India. Pakistanis and refugees from other countries, don't seem to have the same respectful nature or hardworking ethic.
2020-06-04 08:23
True, Chinese are everywhere and they only care about money, they will go anywhere as long as they can earn money.
2020-06-04 09:10
I'm sure there are ones who are not that concerned with money. But we need a hardworking ethic here, and we do not have much of it in the UK.
2020-06-04 10:43
I lived in UK for two years and I agree that UK doesn't have a lot hardworking ethic. But I would say 80% of Chinese care a lot about money especially those who go to Oversea
2020-06-04 11:21
We dont have a hard working ethic? Despite being a country with not many natural resources and being stuck on an island we have invented over half the most important inventions in the world of all time and started the most industrious period of all time (indicating hard work) with the Industrial Revolution... we're not hard working?...
2020-06-04 11:46
Compare the improvement of UK and China, Singapore, US for past 10,20 years. The country does not improve for years imo. And it is not just my thought because the people with UK flag up there is the first to say that
2020-06-04 12:48
The UK is actually improving a lot, Brexit has stifled it but it is also an opportunity. Just because you dont know about projects to expand our economic abilities and push forward our scientific innovation doesnt mean it doesnt exist.
2020-06-04 12:51
Name the project then. UK is a superior and Strong country 10-20years ago but not anymore. Technology, buildings, infrastructures, and economy are constantly regressing
2020-06-04 23:55
Let me rephrase; there is a chav culture to not work hard, it isn't that looked down upon to claim dole, teen mums etc is whilst not encouraged, not suppressed either. I was the one to say we did not generally have a hard working ethic because in comparison to East Asian countries we do not.
2020-06-04 13:28
True tho. As an asian who lived in UK for past two years, the work ethic there is just so different from what I saw in Asia. imo, Chinese is the ethnics that work hardest because every Chinese loves money, and they understand that works harder = more money.
