"Prodigy" is overused
 |
Europe 230IQUSER
You see the word "Prodigy" being overused to describe so many players. Players like s0m, swag, obo, frozen and brollan aren't true prodigies like ZywOo, s1mple who almost immediately showed world beater class coming into the top tier of CS. Could argue cold was a prodigy because in his first full year on a top team he was the best player in the world but he was around 22'ish so i doubt it. I consider you a prodigy if you are/were under 19 years old and contending for best player in the world already because it means that you aren't even at your peak and youre the best. My list of prodigies in CSGO: ZywOo S1mple NiKo KennyS

ive NEVER once in 7,8 years heard ANYONE accuse kennyS of cheating, even when he was considered the GOAT of csgo. i dont know if you realize this, but the AWP nerf was literally made to nerf kennyS. like, thats how good he was. he would just win games. the awp had been the same since 1999 practically. it was even better in source (where kennyS originally played with veryGames) than it ever was in CSGO. THATS how good he was with it. like, literally unbelievable. s1mple is the only player ive seen since that had the same talent as kennyS. not even zywoo in my opinion has it. s1mple gets into a gun battle wit hsomeone and you BELIEVE he will win. even if he has 1 hp and a deagle same with kennys. there is anyone on screen? kennys is gonna kill him you just KNEW it.

not s1mple because he wasnt that good early career, kennyS really wasnt either, he was good but not a prodigy. My list would be: Niko maybe zywoo Braxton Pierce (was doing absurdly good especially for NA at the time before his ban). s0m for his pro lvl play before he was even old enough.

You seem biased. Swag really wasn't even that special I think. Especially considering he only got #18 S1mple was definitely a prodigy. When he played for Hellraisers, Fl1pside, he was considered probably the hottest talent I think considering his stats and his first proper year which wasn't held back by an ESL ban he became arguably the best player of the year. Especially at the age of 18. S0m and Brax were nowhere near S1mple when they were 18 years old. KennyS and S1mple were really good early career so I dont know what you mean tbh. S0m when he was 18 compared to s1mple when he was 18 is nothing. s1mple when 17 > swag when he was 17 Same for Kenny

s1mples early career was in 1.6 and it wasn't good, to be a prodigy your early career has to be amazing, kennyS was good early but not amazing he was a reliable player for his team but not a star IE not a prodigy. s0m was playing with pro players at 15/16 and doing well. Brax at 17 was considered the best NA player and even to EU players and analysts, many thought he would become number 1 player.

s0m wasn't really doing well i think lol. I don't think anyone said Brax was gonna be the best player in the world? He wasn't the best NA player during any year though? Hiko was definitely better? I dont think s1mple was playing professionally when he was in 1.6?

S0m was doing very well. Brax was literally known as the cs prodigy, he was far better than hiko. s1mple played semi pro, he tried but didnt achieve much, he actually also has a vac ban from that era but different game so people kind of forgot.

I dont think that a young gun needs to show better skills than the top flight of players to be called a prodigy. Its like in football you have a kid who shows a nice bit of talent for his age and with a bit of nurturing he can become one of the best. I do however agree that a "prodigy" has to be under 19
2020-06-30 20:30
You missed his point. He is saying a prodigy should be a young player that was exceptionally talented. And he is pointing to S1mple and zywhoo because they were the original prodigies in his eyes. The current “prodigies” don’t compare at all
2020-06-30 20:45
OK but I dont think that a young player has to be THE BEST player immediately to be called "prodigy"

so, a guy under 20 making a living off of a game, being on top30 teams of the world cannot be called prodigy? prod·i·gy noun a person, especially a young one, endowed with exceptional qualities or abilities. "a Russian pianist who was a child prodigy in his day"
2020-06-30 20:41
It's not exactly exceptional if 50% of the scene is a 'prodigy'. Prodigy imo should be a standout as op says, like zywoo or kennyS

this might be because you are considering only HLTV as 'scene' parameter. CS community is much bigger, speacially if you consider local tourneys, low tier pro and semi-pro. Think like this.. if every top30 there's at least 5 players, and we have easily about 20 teams in/out of the top30, you have about 250 players. we still have to consider free agents, benched, under#30, under#100, etc... so, using this argument to me is very credible to name 5, 10, 15 players a prodigy, speacially if he is in T2, T1 while there are still 24-25yo players duelling on lower tiers. this makes those younglings different, thus deserving the title of prodigy.

tl:dr you can pretty much call all top10 players a prodigy without any hesitation. there must be at least 500 players worth mentioning and those top10 prodigies would constitute about 0.02% on this example.
2020-06-30 21:48
Yup, you're completely right, and I'll be honest i maybe I'm being too restrictive with my definition of prodigy. Ultimately the words definition is subjective so arguably we are both right :D
2020-06-30 21:49
In your list, the prodigies reached the TOP20 as 18-19 y/o. Why couldn't frozen and obo achieve that? And Brollan was TOP19 last year.

1. Didn't put cold on my list 2. s1mple was arguably the best in 2016. If you were around then, you would know that a lot of analysts cited him as such and he definitely was by the eye test and he was 18. 3. ZywOo was the best at 18-19 years old. 4. NiKo was arguably the best player in 2016 as well. Same conversation for S1mple but a few months older. 5. KennyS was arguably the best in 2014 as well and he was 19 years old. Same thing with s1mple. 6. You can't call someone a prodigy because of what they might do imo. Have frozen, obo and brollan became the best player yet?
2020-06-30 20:58

They were literally considered by many to be the best player during that year. If you go back and watch old vods and games, people would describe NiKo, S1mple and Kenny as the best player in the world.

People considered NiKo the best player in 2016? I didn't even know he existed in that year, all I know is that coldzera and fallen were dominant.

"Very Great" can be different for everyone tho. For me, "very great" would be t1-t2 players. For example, I would see frozen as a prodigy, he is not a top5 player for sure, but he is a promising talent that can achieve a lot in the future

Whether you like it or not, swag was a prodigy and likely would’ve elevated the NA scene had he not been banned. Could you imagine 2016 liquid with swag hiko and simple? I suspect that NA would’ve won a major a lot earlier with a swag-led lineup. Unfortunate we never got to see a proper progression like S1mple, elige, and players alike. Going by your logic I would say zywoo is the only real successful prodigy considering his first year at T1 he was the number 1 player in the world. It took S1mple 4 years to achieve that feat.

The thing people dont know is that S1mple/NiKo was a best player in the world candidate in 2016. You could not have gone wrong if you did consider s1mple/NiKo the best player in 2016. Same with KennyS in 2014. I don't think swag was a prodigy because he was never even a top 5 player in the world and it seems like when he was 17 he was only #18 in the world which isn't too impressive. I would say frozen is more of a "prodigy" considering the scene is more competitive than then.

Hmm perhaps, the landscape was entirely different for the scene in the last few years than it was in 2013/2014. Well at least for sure we know that zywoo is the ultimate prodigy. To come into the highest level and be the best player in the world is a legendary achievement in its own right.

True I meant his peak before being banned, but he was definitely upwardly trending before the ban so he easily COULD have been better but as you said - it's unknown

s1mple had to be The best player in the world at 16. It isnt enough that he was already top5, carried a team to major semi and final, made a historic play. EDIT: He made two historic plays in 2016

Ah yes,so by that definition everyone is a prodigy who plays professionally? - No. I did not say that. The term is not relative and it's pretty clear, but can be interpreted (as opinion), yes. Please check #32 and the following replies to see if this changes your mind. That's my reasoning on this :)

You have a point, but imo that term "prodigy" is too superlative to be thrown around so easily.I would like to save it to describe the best players of all time who were upstanding in every category and made playing vs tier1 teams on the biggest stages look like a tutorial.

I agree with your statement but I dont exactly agree with the notion that a prodigy has to be young. A prodigy is someone who from the start of his career already is a complete beast in the game (online, on LAN, with pressure or without it doesn't matter for him he will still carry and deliver). Although it happens rarely that a player enters the game at eg 22 years it doesn't mean he cant be a prodigy. Take coldzera. Guy come out of nowhere in 2015, became a top 10/20 player in late 2015 and in 2016 dominated the game. But nu your logic he cant be a prodigy because je was in his twenties.
