Had to make an account just to post in this thread after lurking for almost 20 years, wzup HLTV. Tom Morello is the king of riffs, just listen to this: youtube.com/watch?v=Rm1nCYOZB-s BUT, if I have to pick a favourite, it has to be Tommi Holappa (Greenleaf, Dozer). This whole song is amazing but listen to the solo at 04:45: youtube.com/watch?v=n88C0UOGFcM&feature=..

the best song with mark knopfler is brothers in arms m8
2020-07-15 15:30
you mean the best song by mark knopfler kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk i mean yeah it's good but it doesn't really showcase any guitar playing now does it?
2020-07-15 15:41
the guitar is what makes the whole song even tho it's not advanced guitar play
2020-07-15 15:55
look man i love dire straits and i love brothers in arms but i dont think somebody who doesn't listen to it would appreciate it so why would i send them that?
2020-07-15 15:56
I understand what you mean, but it's also subjective on what you like or not, but i can agree on brothers in arms not being the best introduction song for someone new to dire straits

Hmm gotta be Mr. John Petrucci youtu.be/T9UnlRZR8tg : start at 7:34, for some reason yt wont let me embed the start time in the link It also could be Mr. Synyster Gates youtu.be/YK0iQlKXxEk : start at 2:48 Can’t forget Tim Henson youtu.be/9_gkpYORQLU Angel Vivaldi youtu.be/uZLtzchX32c And last but not least, Micheal Keene youtu.be/XXFNQgsI4r4 start at 6:00 Sorry i can’t pick just one, but these are the guys who come to mind right off the bat. Edit: both guitarists from Chon youtu.be/I-6vLfDEpL8

He’s great melodically and is great technically but I don’t think he really can compare to guys like Keene and Petrucci, who are savants when it comes to technical prowess and melodic feel.
2020-07-16 04:07
John Petrucci? maybe, I guess youtube.com/watch?v=OaUbq3fghWQ
2020-07-15 05:59
lmao looks like petrucci would be everywhere
2020-07-15 06:02
hard to name a 'favorite,' I like a lot of guitarists, but the (main) solo on the song I linked is just what I think of when I think of guitar solos so I gave it to him
2020-07-15 06:08
yeah ofc guitarists playstyles are so diverse so you need to pick like a fav for each genre and skill is independent from music quality most of the guitarists I listen to everyday are average skill in comparison to petrucci for example
2020-07-15 06:21
and then there are guitarists that really aren't all that skilled, like Kurt Cobain and Jerry Cantrell (well, the later is skilled, but he usually doesn't go too hard), but I appreciate them for their songwritting on top of their guitar skills
2020-07-15 06:23
Gary Moore youtube.com/watch?v=98eIW6CN62k Michael Romeo (check his godfather malmsteen if you like him) youtube.com/watch?v=1T7WGasjju0 Guthrie Govan youtube.com/watch?v=IaH2C2Qe97Y Probably my favorite musician is Opeth guitarist and main writer "Mikael"

I started listening to them in my teens as well and at that tiem I felt they are good. then i stopped for a long time. recently i went back to listen to their works after few years and my musical ear had got much better. holy shit they are so good :D

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_M%C3%BCn.. had an extreme impact on tech death scene throughout his career. This is pretty much the only high quality video: youtube.com/watch?v=ZAJJATb9Xf0 (he is on the left). On the right is his friend Kummerer who revived him from the dead. During Necrophagist (which was like Dream Theater of tech death) era he wrote songs like this: youtu.be/wHTfxLLC6LA (not him on the video).
2020-07-15 07:44
revived him from the dead? what lmao
2020-07-15 15:45

Well there's no objective way to define who's best. Now if you tell me someone is objectively better than anyone else in speed of playing the guitar, or in the amount of time they've played it for or in the number of songs they've written or in the innovation of manufacturing a guitar, they're all quantifiable. When you're talking about David Gilmour as objectively being the best, that's ridiculous. I love David Gilmour. But anyone who says he's objectively the best? That's ridiculous. Plus I don't even like Slash that much.
2020-07-16 14:17
Youre retar***,my answer was gonna be slash too but the thread fking says "fav guitarist" how tf can there be a single objective answer to that from everyone?

I don't have a favourite guitarist, it doesn't matter to me in the slightest, how good his skill is, if he can play his part he's good enough for me, so if I was to pick one, it would be the one whose band has the most songs in the list of my favourite songs, which I suppose, is Derek Quinn.

Barring the obvious savant talents theres good guitarists who arent so flashy Larry LaLonde - Primus, such a cool style and unique sound youtu.be/4ML1kZ_HoxE?t=1473 JB Brubaker - August Burns Red, JB's lead work gives the otherwise kinda generic band such a cool flavour youtube.com/watch?v=Ynb8rGyxVsM Guthrie Govan - Aristocrats just amazing at everything youtu.be/SvdMALPq5x8?t=136 Mark Speer - Khruangbin, tasty as fuck eastern influenced guitar player youtu.be/vWLJeqLPfSU

Not in any particular order: David Gilmour youtube.com/watch?v=JwYX52BP2Sk Brilliant sound and melodies, no unnecessary notes. Steve Hackett youtube.com/watch?v=SD5engyVXe0 The same as above. The instrumental section in the middle of the song is so clean. Alex Lifeson youtube.com/watch?v=zfloBf5yLi8 Such massive soundscapes and Rush only has 3 members. Alex is a big part of that sound.
