He is a right-footed winger (left), meaning that he's prone to run plays from the top left to the center of the penalty area AND midfield (he has to worry about losing the play and giving the other team a counter offense). So, this also mans that when going for a play he has to decide to either strike (if not to score, to try to disbalance the defence and create a rebound play) or to layback in midfield and try to create the play from there, allowing the left back winger to go up to support offense
I feel that what you call EGO most likely comes from news you watched, not yourself. If you were a true football fan you'd realized that the only players that complain about Neymar's style are his opponents - he is highly regarded as a good team player and a mentor for younger ones.
I don't know (and really don't care) about how he is in RL, but his position demands vertical plays more often than not, since he is not the main striker (causing surprise and confusing the defense). I honestly don't se how his 'ego' gets in the way.
