pennsylvania. Most states are underdeveloped here, only ones i would argue that are pretty 1st world are maryland, mass, nh, vermont, nj, cali, washington and large cities. Same as me, Australian Japanese, but my family has friends in Korea and haven't had any bad experiences. Hate the fact that the youth get attacked for the actions of the old. I brought up the flag controversy with my family and they said that Koreans just need to move on and stop crying about the past. Which I somewhat agree with but can see it from both sides.

I grew up a bit in Japan and both AU and Japan have there ups and downs, If u want to be studying hard since primary school and not have much free time as a 12 yr old, go to Japan. On a positive note Japanese kids are much more respectful and well-mannered, likely because the parents know that the kids are a representation of themselves. In AU however you have parents that let their 5 year old on the floor of maccas touching the floor with there bare hands and face, but on a positive note, we are taught to be different and "not fit in the crowd" and that our opinions matter. So AU is a lot more "free" than Japan

True I guess, but it very much depends on where you live, the school you go to and how much you want to go to a good university. In Japan as a whole only like 60% of students go to uni, so those who aren’t studying have it pretty easy. As for Korea over 90% do iirc, so I imagine competition is a lot tougher there. I’m in Tokyo tho so studying is very much stressful. 8-13 sounds like a dream come true lol. We have 6 days of school a week and my Saturday timetable is 8-13, other days till 15.
2020-08-14 16:39
i think the only time i had to stay till 15 was tuesdays and that was because we had 2 hours of sport at the end which was super chill lol. and yeah my mother had to go to school on saturdays aswell during her time. glad that shit was abolished

2020-08-14 14:22
after being in both .. i'd probably pick Japan. I didn't really feel super well in any of them like i did in Taiwan for example Pros for south korea -cheaper -the atmosphere in general feels better and less restrictive -less crowded -less scams for tourists (ahm yes there are quite a few in japan, that i did not see in south korea) -better english -easier to get around (those japan entrances and exits in subways are so criminally complicated) Pros for japan -better infrastructure -i personally liked those drink atms they have everywhere -no stupid fees at bank ATMs -vegetarian options * subjective -no ghettos in big cities (or i haven't seen them) -more culture and variety between places -no need for kakaomap or other stupid apps, google is just fine. -and VERY important - people in Japan KNOW how to drive. This is not a joke, South korea's drivers are absolutely absymal, you could die on the street without knowing what hit you. It's basically like being in those 'meanwhile in russia' youtube videos but without russians. I've only seen worse drivers in Bosnia to be honest
2020-08-13 11:39
japan and korea are both cheap
2020-08-13 17:50
This is very nuanced. Depends on what you need (for food), transport, rent. Overall, compared to Switzerland ? Yes both are cheap. Compared to Austria, i found Japan to be more expensive. but that's just my view
2020-08-13 18:07
I was born and live in the UK. In japan, compared to prices in london, it is very cheap for food and transport (i cant say about rent because I haven't lived there yet). Compared to some european countries though, they are around the same prices. But in general, whether going to japan or korea is expensive or not is dependant on what you buy, for example most people prefer restaurants or fancy food places instead of regular food that you will find for much cheaper in a 7/11. In the UK there's no real good places that sell food for that cheap
2020-08-13 18:52
London probably has the highest rents in Europe, on the other hand ... food in supermarkets in the UK is dirt cheap, which i can't say about Japan. If i had to rate vs Europe, it would indeed be somewhere around the average of western europe. But western europe basically contains Norway, Switzerland, Iceland - countries which are ridiculous in prices, but also Austria or Spain which are cheaper. Just to give you a comparison because i kept track of my costs on the trip. In 3 weeks in Japan i've spent about the same amount i did in 5 in Korea. And the initial argument was that Korea is cheaper. We were not talking about Europe
2020-08-13 20:13
Well that's different from my experience then, I spent 2 weeks in both Korea & Japan with around £600~ to spend for both (exc. hotels and transport which I prepaid for) and it was more than enough. I came back with more or less £50 left when I finished my trips I know this is a different topic but London compared to Jpn&SK isn't dirt cheap, at all. For example, the price of a tesco meal deal, £3 which equates to about 400 ish yen, I was able to get a bowl of ramen with several toppings which is much more filling. The price of a meal at a small restaurant in London for about £15-20 I was able to get an all-you-can-eat korean buffet in SK, so no, I don't think it's that similar. The only real cheap eats in london around where I live are chicken shops, but those are ridiculously unhealthy and most of the time I don't buy from them.
2020-08-14 17:35
i actually went on both of them one after the other last summer, i had 2 months with exactly 3 weeks in japan and 5 in south korea. and i kept track of all expenses. I can tell you where the main difference is ... the transport. I mean rent and food are about 10-20% cheaper in Korea max. However .. in japan just that JR Pass ALONE was twice as expensive as everything i've spent in Korea on transport - and that included a return Daegu-Seoul by KTX and a return flight Busan-jeju + the who knows how many buses and subways i took. I said supermarkets in the UK are dirt cheap, not going out. I landed in UK 3 weeks before going to Japan, i was in ASDA, prices for vegetables, diary products, junk food are probably around half of what i've seen in japan/korea. although i agree, going out in London is quite expensive. For me as a whole, excluding those outrageous rents in London, the UK is actually quite cheap. I've checked numbeo's cost of living index and it isn't quite far from what we've been discussing about different costs numbeo.com/cost-of-living/rankings_by_co..
2020-08-14 21:01
When i'm travelling I spend most of my time outside as possible so I don't buy ingredients for my food, which is what I assume you do. Supermarkets are cheap in that regard, however their options for food to eat out aren't nowhere as cheap (i.e Tesco Meal deal, above) compared to japan and korea. That is what I was comparing from the beginning I don't remember the prices for transport I used so I can't talk for that sector, but i'll take your word for Japan being more expensive.
2020-08-14 22:01
no not really, i don't buy ingredients, but i do buy some vegetables to eat raw or something for breakfast and sometimes a light dinner .. can also be yoghurt, maybe testing the local junk food etc so i go check supermarkets out + i like to see how the locals shop (cultural enrichment) But yeah i agree, going out (food) in asia in general is fairly cheap, i mean even Japan, Korea or Singapore - which are supposed to be some of the most expensive, are cheaper or comparable to some east european countries. I would like to go to Korea and Japan again one day, because i feel i 'misunderstood' something there, and i am not sure what. But it's like a piece of the puzzle is missing. And i realised that when i went to Taiwan and it felt like everything was -clear-. Anyway ... waiting for covid to let us travel again :D:D
2020-08-14 22:22
>less scams in SK whaaat? Korea has more scams than Japan , that's why they have "tourists police" there. Also tons of Ripoffs.
2020-08-13 17:58
it depends on what you consider a scam. For me a scam is when something almost purposely is made in a way to confuse you. So a couple of examples - the JR Pass. I would buy it again, but it has so many 'exceptions' written underneath and doesn't cover certain places at all. They almost never actually wanted to give me a seat, i saw half-empty trains, and the seller was like 'no seats'. Give me a break .. - another notable one is when they post pictures of places you can book. And they post a picture of the building across the street, which looks amazing. Then you arrive and you see a house that's about to fall on you - Lawson 100. It's 100 ... it says 100 on it. Not 324, 450. 100 !!! if 90% of the products are 100 yens, or max 100 let's say, why are some 300-400-500 ?
2020-08-13 18:10
I haven't had JR Pass in my life so i dunno about it. the second one never happend to me. are you talking about hotels? the third one , how is that even considered as a scam? The majority is still 100yen and everything has a price tag. you can still buy what's worth 100yen with 100yen in lawson 100. It's just Lawson 100 sells variety of stuff such as fresh foods(veggies , fruits and meat). Lawson100 is like 100yen shop , convenience store and supermarket combined. I've never seen anyone complain about the store name...
2020-08-13 18:44
i am talking about accomodations like airbnb, which in japan is officially required to have a registration for. it's not like europe. i have not said it's a scam per se, you don't understand. The same chain has the store LAWSON without the 100. It's the same store ... just call it Lawson and that's it. As someone coming from europe that knows a 2 euro store has 2 euro products, not 10 .. that is just confusing.
2020-08-13 20:07
Why in Korea u can't use Google maps
2020-08-13 22:11
it can be but it's somewhat difficult, navigation doesn't work at all. you can read more about it on google.
2020-08-13 22:16
Ty sir
2020-08-13 22:38
i heard its because the maps contain serious and sensitive info can be used by north korea. google can make one but it will be so specific so its gonna be a very good gift to mr kim xD
2020-08-14 03:10
wtf what kind of JR pass did you bought it's like the biggest bargain in Japan
2020-08-14 01:18
the standard JR pass. Yes it is a bargain, but at the same time .. many exceptions and in some places almost useless. Kyoto - 1 station, Mt. Fuji, can't get to it etc. So ok i investigated beforehand and knew the limitations, but for people that don't ... 'convenient way of traveling throughout Japan by rail.'. This doesn't match with 'we only cover JR lines' Also the way that ticket sellers behaved when asking for a seat 'we don't have seat anymore' and i got on the train and usually 20-50% of them were empty ... isn't ok.
2020-08-14 07:06
obviously it only covers JR lines lol that's capitalism many trains have non reserved seats

And that is what i'm saying the marketing message of the JR pass is confusing and looks like a tourist trap. Let's be honest, most tourists would not suspect it doesn't go to many places. And will not investigate that Japan has like 10 different operators. Regarding non reserved seats. I'm not sure if you know what the JR pass does. The non reserved seats are usually full. I've checked. The JR pass entitles you a free seat in the reserved section (ofc if there are some left), if you go with it to the vendor in the station, they should give you a seat as written in the terms. I had a 3 week JR Pass, and used the trains between cities 12 times. 10 times i was told there were no seats, i got on in the reserved section and found at least 20% of the seats being empty. I occupied one, and out of the 10 times, only once did a guy come to me to say he had that seat reserved. And still there were many seats left. So the only obvious conclusion is -> they do not want to give JR pass users reserved seats. Thus JR does not cover it's promise in the terms. Anyway this is pointless as a discussion. Because it's hard to call something that is a bargain also a tourist trap. That's the beauty of whoever thought of the JR Pass.

And what are the pros of living in Taiwan? Is the climate really that hot and humid?
2020-08-14 02:38
-people are friendlier and more open -not so crowded -way way cheaper (in 8 weeks in Taiwan i spent about the same as in 3 in Japan and 5 in Korea - to give you a good comparison) -simple and easy way to wander around, everything is straightforward -> no stupid maze subway stations like in Japan (*EXCEPT Taipei Main station ), no problems with navigation like in Korea. -indeed less humid and temperatures seem to be more bearable -better drivers and less traffic vs korea (nobody tried to kill me phew) -less bugs to worry about -also did not see ghettos, i did see some poor areas but i didn't feel unsafe at any point (like in Korea) -it's vegetarian paradise ... incomparable with the other two * subjective There are some bad points ... culturally it's not Japan level for sure, a lot of scooters thus more noise, some places feel really wild Indonesia-style. China might take over and there's obviously an excess in pollution in some places. English is still pretty terrible.

I've seen Taiwanese cities on google maps, at most part they are really messy and quite dirty, the buildings are architecturally chaotic and the advertisements are everywhere, did you feel discomfort from that?
2020-08-15 14:54
depends on what you mean by really messy and chaotic. to some extent it looks like it especially due to the scooters and buildings which seem worse maintained than Korea. But ... this is how i explained it to some friends also. Let's say Taipei vs Seoul. If you go to a random neighbourhood on a 1-10 scale .. where for 1 the streets are full of garbage, there are shaddy people everywhere and the asphalt is maybe no existent and 10 is a residential area in Vienna, Most of Taipei i would say is somewhere between 5 to 8. Now Seoul on the other hand is somewhere between 3 and 9. The ghettos in Seoul are so ridiculous that it feels like you are in a documentary about Iraq after the war started. So in this regard ... Taiwan felt way more comfortable and safer.

Thank you for sharing your honest opinion! There is no much information about Taiwan, especially comparisons with Korea and Japan. You could make a blog about your experience, it might get popular
2020-08-17 23:53
indeed there are not many tourists. mostly because of poor flight connections. you either have to go through Beijing or fly from South Korea to go there. In Taipei i've seen maybe like 30 tourists at the guard changing, and once out of Taipei, even in big cities i've rarely seen anyone

2020-08-13 17:59
If you're Chinese, I don't think going to Korea would be a good idea. make a Korean friend before you go, or else it won't be a pleasant vacation :(

Don't worry, I've got multiple Korean friends who are able to guide me. (School friend group) Also, I have s1mple_is_goat mens))

I probably wouldn´t want to live in either country even if part of my family is from Japan. If I had to live in one of the countries, however, I wouldn´t think twice: Japan (even with the earthquakes). By far. - Food: korean food is good but japanese food is just unbeatable and there are much better foreign restaurants in Japan (in terms of amount and overall quality) than in Korea; - People have better manners in Japan. - Japanese cities are cleaner and more organized; - Infrastructure is better in Japan; - Japan is much bigger and therefore it has a much more diverse landscape/ geography and climate. You just have many more sightseeing places/landmarks to visit on your holidays/spare time; - Girls is a tie (if you count plastic surgery maybe S. Korea wins by a small margin); - Japan is safer than South Korea (not by much though). Both countries are very safe though and it´s rare to see foreigners being targeted by local criminals; - Tokyo´s nightlife is way more interesting than Seoul As for living, I´d say both are difficult because of cultural differences and the fact that both countries do not accept foreigners well.. however and given the fact that there are much more foreigners living in Japan than in Korea, it must mean something... Disclaimer: I´ve been to both countries. I´ve been to Japan around 20 times, and twice to South Korea.

Japan for sure. I cant stand korean language, and I absolutely love japanese language. Biggest cons for me are xenophobia and natural disasters

been to Korea, it was not so good but I guess it's because when I went there it was rainy af, so I would choose Japan
2020-08-14 05:08
Might be biased since Im korean but I choose Korea. The country is really clean especially in the cities (as in buildings not the environment). Food is alright in the cities but much better in markets like street food. Honestly K-POP brings a bad image only because of foreigners. To koreans, its just pop music but foreigners inflate it saying "OMG THEY ARE SO GORGEOUS I STAN HIM I WOULD DIE FOR HIM" brings a bad reputation. I wouldn't mind visiting Japan though but my parents 100% won't let me since Koreans have a grudge against Japan (history stuff)

My parents are pretty restrictive lol and this is one of them. They put parental controls so I cant download apps, they manage how many games I can play (I am only allowed to play 1.5 hours a week) and they only let me play CSGO twice which was at a gaming cafe. Im 17 btw lol. feelsbadman

2020-08-14 15:21
totally agree ....... by far one of the friendliest countries i've been to, if not the friendliest. I do disagree however with the 'english' remark. i mean overall they do speak better than the koreans or japanese, but that's because more people seemed to at least know some basics to make some minimal communication.
2020-08-14 22:57
Well i prefer japan but visa is a big problem there, u must marry a japanese women to live there more than 5 years (the good thing is that u have 100% a job as language teacher if u speaks japanese, im learning it)

i would live in Japan because they have more fluent english people easy to navigate i just don't know the whereabouts the lifetstyle of korea nor the language at all i just need to learn more about korea to live there :) anyone can live anywhere
2020-08-15 07:09
I'd prefer Japan for 90% of things, like food and nature. But one huge plus for SK is that it's extremely easy to learn to read and write Hangul. But of course, learning the meaning of the words will still be very difficult.
