I'm really happy about Gasly winning his first ever race. It's been 24 years since a french won a grand prix and it feels good to see someone such as perseverant winning this. Even though it was luck, it is still deserved and defended very well against Sainz at the last lap.

Gasly had a bit of luck, but he really deserved the win after the fight Sainz put up against him. I can't help but feel that Sainz should have had that win but still very well deserved. I'd say Gasly's win was even more deserved than Panis'. He literally just drove and didn't crash, Gasly had to manage tyres and do quite a bit of overtaking (though he did get lucky with some safety cars and some penalties).
2020-09-06 17:53
Not to mention holding off Sainz who was pushing hard.

+1 It was a really special race, way different than a usual mercedes 1-2. As you said, Gasly was lucky with the penalties and the safety cars but otherwise he stood strong and unshakeable. That was really an interesting late fight with Sainz and it got me really emotional at this last lap.

Definitely. Very happy for all three podium finishers, and Norris. Shame Ricciardo wasn't up there.

Yup. A podium for Ricciardo should be deserved. Even though I feel like Renault is inconsistent at every track and Abitebullshit there not helping either. I hope 2021 will be better for them even though it might not be the case

They're rebranding as Alpine which will be interesting. I'm mixed about Alonso joining instead of young talent but it's still exciting to see what he can do in a decent car.

Yeah I have the same POV as yours. But otherwise I'm unsure if Alpine will work out or not. Well it's too early to say that and with the 2022 regulations things may totally change.
2020-09-06 18:24
It's only a branding change, I don't see it effecting their performance either way.

It shouldn't, Alpine is a daughter brand of Renault. It's the same time, same manufacturer and all, just a different paint scheme and title.
2020-09-06 18:43
He left with still a huge amount of talent so I'm happy to see he's coming back.

Yeah he's obviously hugely talented, but I can't help but feel sorry for the drivers like de Vries, Ollie Rowland, Max Günther, Vandoorne, Evans who should have had that F1 seat but doesn't get it for another good while. Also Renault's younger talent, like Lundgaard and Zhou (assuming they'd get the right amount of superlicense points). But yeah, we haven't seen Alonso in a relatively competetive car since 2014. It's gonna be great to see what he can do in the potentially 3rd fastest car on the grid.
2020-09-06 18:47
With the recent turn of speed the Renault engine is seeing, I wouldn't put money against Renault's potential to be 3rd fastest but with the Merc engine switch for McLaren it seems unlikely they'll be able to do so in 2021. 2022 throws everything up into the air though.

I mean, on some races the Renault cars have been the 3rd fastest cars even this year. The Mercedes powered McLaren is going to be gnarly, and I'm more of a McLaren fan than Renault anyway. But between Ferrari trying to recover, Aston Martin, Alpine, McLaren and AlphaTauri making these excellent drives as Gasly did today, it's going to be one hell of a midfield fight.
2020-09-06 18:55
For sure I'm hype'd. I'd love to see Williams continue improving and make a proper step into that midfield fight and for de Vries to nab Latifi's seat, as unlikely as it all is.

That too. I think de Vries is gonna stick with Merc in FE, in theory it should run for a longer time than F1 and he's looking pretty comfy in there.
2020-09-06 21:46
Yeah he and Stoffel are looking great in it. Merc took over a team that was languishing 3rd from the bottom of the standings the previous year and ended up finish 3rd best this year. Inb4 Merc domination in Formula E too lol

Not saying it was undeserved, but it wasn't as big of a competetive driving challenge as Gasly had, as in he didn't have to race other drivers as hard as Gasly had to today. Obviously Panis had a masterclass drive but he didn't exactly show off his racing skills themselves. Gasly and AlphaTauri had excellent strategy and he took really good care of the car, he did brilliantly to perform some overtaking moves early on and he had an excellent defensive drive when Sainz was closing in.

Yes, it's special, I'm not discrediting Panis' win, I'm just saying Gasly's drive was spectacular.
2020-09-06 18:01
Luck is part of racing, and he still had to take advantage of the opportunity that luck gave him. He definitely could've gotten stuck behind Stroll at the beginning and just faded back. Luck shouldn't take anything away from this win at all.

Yes you are right. I should have precised that Gasly has won with his driving skills as well, which managed to put him through Stroll at the restart of the gp. ;)

This is why you keep watching F1, truly one of the best races I've watched and Gasly deserved it after the shit he got last year. Big middle finger to Red Bull who proved once again today that their car is extremely difficult.
2020-09-06 17:53
Hopefully a better team (outside Red Bull) can pick him up. He deserves it.
2020-09-06 17:56
there isnt much "better" team beside Red Bull that can pick him up. u have Mercedes but they not gonna get rid out off Bottas or Hamilton in the next atleast 2-3 years. Ferrari gonna have Sainz and Leclerc next year(s), McLaren have Norris and Ricciardo for next year. The only 2 teams left then is Racing Point, but Stroll and Perez drive very good this year so i doubt they will change anytime soon unless they pick up Vettel instead off Perez, bcs Stroll will have his seat no matter what. And Renualt that will have Alonso back next year, Ocon havent been so good this year so the only possibility is that Gasly take Ocons seat. Haas, Williams and Alfa would just be downgrade.
2020-09-06 18:54
Yeah I had Renault(Alpine) in mind, French team/driver, he'd be the perfect replacement for Ocon if he can't perform. I don't think Ocon is performing to his potential yet but for sure if Ocon doesn't put out in 2021 (though he'll probably be against an even tougher teammate) I'd love to see Gasly get an upgrade.
2020-09-06 18:57
Well, now its an seat empty for Racing Point/Aston Martin next season when Perez leaving. He could go for that seat, either Gasly or Vettel getting that seat. (or mby even Hulkenberg) but i bet more on the other 2. If Gasly go to RP, Albon can get his Alpha Tauri seat and mby Vettel going back to Red Bull..
2020-09-09 22:05
I think that seat is hardly empty. It's been fairly obvious Vettel was going to take Perez's seat and Red Bull's policy is centered around young driver talent so they wouldn't take the likes of Vettel/Perez/Hulkenberg even if Gasly did move elsewhere. The most likely next Red Bull candidate is Tsunoda but he, if I'm not mistaken, needs to finish 3rd or better in the F2 championship to have enough super license points to race in F1 (he currently sits 4th) and I'd imagine they'd put him in the Alpha Tauri first anyway so we may see Albon in that Red Bull seat for a while longer yet. Red Bull's policies are really limiting their options atm.
2020-09-10 10:31
ye i was just seeing the possibilitys abt what "could" happend. but now Vettel has signed for Racing Point/Aston Martin. Nice to see him stay in F1, i love that man!
2020-09-10 15:39
Yeah should be interesting to see what he can do in a midfield car that should suit his driving style more than the previous turbo hybrid's he's been driving. Also interested to see what Aston Martin can bring to the table in 2022 because they won't be able to use a Merc clone, surely.

2020-09-06 18:03
Yes, if he had a decent car like for example renault he could do something. Sadly alpha romeo is so trash
2020-09-06 18:05
Yeah it was decent last year and Kimi had a bunch of great results but the Alfa is a dog this year.
2020-09-06 18:11
yeah with redbull/mclaren/renault he would be getting easy podiums
2020-09-06 18:13
Wonder if he'll stick around for next year...
2020-09-06 18:03
I doubt it, unfortunately. The rumor of Ilott/Schumacher + Hulkenburg at Alfa next year is really appealing if he doesn't though.
2020-09-06 18:06
I hope Shwartzman would be in the conversation too, especially if he wins the F2 championship.

thats even better, his car was 10th slowest on the grid. He shouldnt be anywhere in 1st position. If I'm not mistaken seb had his car tuned for wet setup during qualifying and during the race it also rained so lucky for him and he had great pace so that was car was destined to win that day. Still I think what matters is both cars weren't suppose to be where they are regardless of the penalties you talk about.
2020-09-06 18:05
Everyone knew more or less the weather forecast for that weekend. So everyone would have setup their car accordingly. And it only rained for 5 mins during the race itself. My point is that Gasly needed a huge amount of luck to win today. Vettel won because he was the fastest on that day, which you can see by his winning margin (12,5s over 2nd) and led pretty much the entire race.
2020-09-06 18:18
That STR3 was basically an RB3 with an old Ferrari donkey in the back that was probably still faster than the Red Bull's Renault engine lol I'd say the drivers are fairly comparable given the equipment.
2020-09-06 18:06
Was the car really that good? or was Vettel just on another level? Because if you look at Bourdais results with the same car it's night and day.
2020-09-06 18:34
The car was capable. Only Vettel managed to extract that potential from it though.

Vettel won because of the rain edit: he got pole because of rain, both had lucky as a factor for winning. but as maquiavel said: we need fortune (lucky) and virtu (intelligence) for achieve something
2020-09-06 18:10
Of course there's always some amount of luck in F1, even just looking at the mechanical side. But put it this way, If you restart the race tomorrow with Gasly on pole, are you confident he wins again?

2020-09-06 18:09
Feels bad for him. He's looking like a bot in that Red Bull, same as Gasly did.
2020-09-06 18:19
Almost like Red Bull keep designing the car to the razor's edge driving of Max and that its inevitable that the second driver there will suffer because of it. Would help if they actually gave him equal parts probably.
2020-09-06 18:32
I think they've had equal parts but, like you said, that car fits Max's driving style and unless the driver is really adaptable like Ricciardo or Alonso, someone along those lines, they'll struggle badly in that car.
2020-09-06 18:36

2020-09-06 19:10
It was the best race in this season and probably the last one with such emotions. Mercedes will not make such a mistake once again. The first time I did not fall asleep while watching :D:D I wish if only everyone would have the same engine, the f1 would be way more interesting to watch...
2020-09-06 19:39
The engines are currently pretty equally matched (other than the Ferrari engine which is a dog this year) it's the aerodynamic efficiency that makes the biggest difference in one lap pace and, with that, how the cars treat their tires during a race that make the biggest differences.
2020-09-07 07:10
