2020-09-28 19:08
how is it unnecessary and do you see it as a problem?
2020-09-28 20:44
It's not integral to the functioning of society, and doesn't make the lives of the average person better. So yes, It's a problem.
2020-10-07 15:40
well it does make peoples lives safer, when the nation has a way to defend themselves. And if there is a way to defend your nation, it essentially creates peace with your neighboring nations.
2020-10-09 09:20
Voluntary service exists. works fine for lots of places. Create better incentives for people to serve: Tax breaks, priority healthcare, high pay, whatever. There are better ways then legislating draft or active conscription
2020-10-10 06:03
it completely depends on the country, if that works or not. And most of the world these days are democratic, so you have a chance to vote for the defense type. It's not much different from taxes, if you want to live in that specific country, you are obligated to do your share for the country.

2020-09-28 19:36
Why are hating conscription and wanting basic necessities provided (where possible) mutually exclusive?
2020-09-28 19:44
Because in order to offer [not "provide"] you need to violate someone's REAL actual inherent human rights to great lenghts. You could say you hate conscription simply because it makes you think of MAGA country rahsistas , it would be a much more compelling argument. You can't ever in your life claim you're ANY sort of "human rights defender" if you are willing to brutally violate some because such violation aligns with your worldview. Just like for you Healthcare and "Free" money are needs that have to be offered by a state. Some "moderate" , average "normie" might believe that having a military of x size is also a necessity that must be fulfilled by the state, and his belief is just as valid as yours [both invalid]. Specially when the army, on principle, is simply the armed forces branch that takes care of protecting the entire national sovereignty from external threats, his case will always be much stronger than yours.

If you value society, tax is a necessary evil. Government exists to keep other forces is check, if you don't mind standard-oil esque monopolies or glorified anarchy, go to Somalia or something. I don't advocate for the abolishment of the military, or even all foreign involvement, just unnecessary violations of free speech.

Mantadory service doesnt mean you go to war holy shit lmao
2020-09-28 21:17
It still establishes the precedent that government COULD send you to war if it thought it necessary.
2020-09-29 18:53
it establishes that if your country was being attacked, the country would actually have a lot of prepared people ready to fight. you do realize mandatory service is just basically training for 9 months, where you do small works in between like cleaning and monitoring. its literally just as simple as that, no one goes to Afghanistan lmao
2020-09-29 18:57
(tell that to the conscripted americans that died in vietnam) If someone doesn't want to die for a country in the event of war, then they shouldn't have to. Like, that's it. No training, no service, no nothing. If someone doesn't want to then they shouldn't have to.
2020-09-29 18:59
oh yeah lets talk about ww2 and how countries just couldnt ignore the war, also not fighting to protect your loved ones is the most pussy shit i have ever heard, are you telling me if some country attack you you wouldnt defend it?
2020-09-29 19:03
Ww2 was such a vicious outlier in terms of how comically evil one side was, It's hardly even worth considering as a counter point. Most wars are solely economic endeavors, and most countries aren't remotely in danger of being invaded. Outright war is outdated.
2020-09-29 19:04

2020-09-28 19:26
Human rights are constructed by man anyway. Who says a state can't have power over your life? We're in a different situation than bigger countries. Either you serve one way or another, or you go to prison.
2020-09-29 20:31
It's unnecessary, therefor it shouldn't exist.

It is not necessary until it is. Different countries have different military traditions. Finland made USSR pay dearly for the war 70 years ago thanks to state-wide mobilization.
2020-10-06 12:18
It depends how it works. In brazil, they let you choose, i picked Air force, i actually flight a Gripen jet plane over amazon jungle and i missiled an airplane of drug dealers from Venezuela. i heard them b4 get killed saying on the radio" no companero, no, por favor, no no no no no " BEST DAY EVER OF MY LIFE.

2020-10-03 02:45
yes, like many other mandatory things in society, e.g. taxation.
2020-09-28 18:56
The state doesn't have a right to someone's life they do have a right to your money if you, you know, value society
2020-09-28 18:59
Case in point. You didn't reason with taxation off principle but practice. I could just as well say that the state has a right to someone's life if you, you know, value society.
2020-09-28 19:08
There's no society that requires forced military service. If a government can't get enough people to fight for it then it probably doesn't deserve to exist, or was going to lose the war anyways. Tax is necessary in any functioning society.
2020-09-28 19:11
You're still going off practice even though human rights is just a loosely defined human construct. You're right, there's no society that requires forced military service. Presumably there's no society that requires mandatory taxation either since 99% of the population consider it to be such jolly good fun. Taxation was just an example btw. I could just as well have mentioned mandatory school.
2020-09-28 19:28
Go make a country without collecting tax or otherwise stealing from the population, I'm not sure it's possible its pretty easy to do without forced labour
2020-09-28 19:28
Go make a country without having mandatory military service, granted there is no voluntarism. I'm really just going off your logic. If military service shouldn't be mandatory because there is voluntary personnel, then mandatory taxation should be abolished too since pretty much the entire population support taxation, to whatever extent. Mandatory military service is the way of securing the taxing society you value so much. If there were no voluntary personnel then it would have to be mandatory, and that's what we have to go off since you're reasoning with practice (whether there is voluntary activity) and not principle (i.e. human rights), which is what we're discussing.
2020-09-28 19:41
Mandatory taxation is necessary for any function society as we know it. A conscript military is not. If there is no voluntary personnel to defend a country, then that country doesn't have the confidence of the people. Money and lives are two very different things, and that calculation is something everyone should be allowed to make on their own.

To be fair the finnish government and most european governments for that matter don't need people to serve in the military, it's more of a safety net so that if they did go to war they would have a large supply of people who know what they're doing to an extent
2020-09-28 19:27
Please stop emabrassing yourself. I don't like seeing you like this.
2020-09-28 19:37
You're a fucking ancap, if anyone was gonna agree, I figured it'd be you. Guess not.
2020-09-29 18:50
I can't agree with such hypocrisy, much of my affection towards Anarcho-Capitalism derives from it being the absolute 100% most consistent, honest and transparent set of principles in this mess. You are being EXTREMELY pedantic to say that coercion is okay for the things YOU WANT but not okay for the things HE WANTS, moreover, the things he believes in coercion for are far more essential than yours. The irony is perverse.
2020-09-29 18:58
taxation is necessary conscription rarely is for the state, and is unnecessary in virtually every existing country today. Therefor, one should happen, the other shouldn't Most people value, you know, government protection to some extent.
2020-09-29 19:06
You seem to be oblivious to the fact that all European countries with the exception of France, UK and Italia, have massively underfunded and underpopulated military force. They are all several thousands of personel below what they should have according to their territorial size, population and wealth. Once this is taken into consideration, the government obviously can't force people to become soldiers, so they opt for the next best thing, which is forcing them to be reserve personel. ALL of this is wrong, but for a normie point of view this is MUCH more justified than your retarded views, healthcare isn't a right, welfare isn't a right, public schooling isn't a right, YOU DONT HAVE THE RIGHT TO OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY. BORDERS However, are indeed an inherent human right, including under an ancap society, as they'd fall under private property-individual sovereignty. You have no idea how terribly wrong you are.
2020-09-29 19:28
In what way are borders more inherent to basic necessities? Many native american societies didn't even have concepts of ownership. These ideas are anything but inherent. Why doesn't someone have a right to money that is primarily made through exploitation, or worse, inheritance? It's not like the rich will be hurting; at worst it costs them like half of their already massive income. For the poor and middle class, they collectively benefit from the services and safety provided, even though they also pay taxes. What of the disenfranchised, ill or injured? What do you do with them in a government-less society? Are they left to suffer, or do you think the rich will care for them out of the kindness of their own hearts>? Tax isn't "good", but it's worth the price paid, since the general population benefits more. Conscription is not, regardless of its benefit to national security.
2020-09-30 18:50
I already know that if i reply to the amount of horrible, evil and moronic nonsense you just posted, you're not gonna read it. You've finally gone full retard, and that makes me a bit sad, or dissapointed, or maybe both. What a tragedy.
2020-09-30 18:53
....Uh sorry? There are far more evil things in this world then taxes.
2020-09-30 18:59
Im not trying to "own" you or "destroy" you , i find this to be childish. I will not trying to reason with you, because you can't be reasoned with. So i will, in good faith, ask you a very simple question: This is where i live and i lived my whole life: i.imgur.com/fqcYk3I.png Here's where i'd hang out with my friends when i was younger: i.imgur.com/MAZqz0w.png Now let me get this straight, if i busted my ass working for 10-15 years and managed to become a multimillionaire or a millionaire, and i decide that i want to leave ALL of that to my son, and i don't want my son to work a day of his life and i don't want him to ever live any of the struggle that i went through...somehow...that's .... "Evil"????? According to you??? And what are you??? Are you GOOD???????? Little man, you are hatred, evil, envy and cowardice personified in the body of a pubert, if you truly believe those evil rich capitalists are evil with legs that's alright, but don't ever think you're on the opposite side to them. You should honestly be ashamed of yourself.
2020-09-30 19:10
The assumption here is that all multimillionaires busted their ass... or that all poor people didn't. Something that is objectively just... wrong. the world is not a meritocracy, money is not necessarily a function of hard work, especially for the political class. What is more evil, in my opinion, is denying help to people who through no fault of their own didn't make it. People who were born into terrible situations. People born poor, or disabled, people who were plain unlucky, or were injured later in life. That is a moral obligation the rich and well off have; an obligation that won't be filled voluntarily by most people.
2020-09-30 19:35
Good lord...you TRULY have 0 idea what you're talking about... the moral and cognitive difference between us is just too big, i simply can't communicate with you. After saying you can have a country without borders but you cant have a country without a welfare state, you proceed to doble down on such a retarded, evil and physically repugnant premise. But what bothers me the most is your fake concern for what you think are "the poor" , you don't give a shit about us, you're not trying to help anyone but yourself. All you want to do is impress other people around you and virtue signal something you don't have, which is virtue and empathy. Go ahead, keep showing everyone how much you care because you wanna tax the rich for freez healthcare and college xdxXDxDXdX I hope you grow up out of it, but you're enough well off not to, so bye.
2020-09-30 19:55
what? If i was going to virtue signal, I'd go around spamming blm on twitter, wtf is this accusation? As a lower class (trans) american, I have EVERYTHING to gain from healthcare reform in the USA. This wasn't ever just about you, or dirt poor people. I didn't say you couldn't have a state without welfare... or if I did, I poorly misspoke. I said you can't have a state without tax. which, I figured was irrelevant, since ancaps don't believe in a state. Don't expect me to have consistent beliefs, my ideas are not settled in ANY respect. My ideas are not as fundamental as yours, I don't have an ideology I subscribe to, I don't really have values that I latch on to beyond tolerance & individual freedom.

You get paid and you choose to basically do work for retirement homes, schools or similar places. I don't see how that is abusing human rights.
2020-09-28 19:07
The state forcing you to work anywhere is a violation of human rights, especially if it can force you to serve in an army.
2020-09-28 19:12
Which article it violates exactly?
2020-09-28 19:15
the principle of it, not literally the UN couldnt put that in writing lmao, they'd alienate 80% of the world
2020-09-28 19:20
So having to work for 6-12 months with pay and being free to leave the country any time you just feel like so is a violation of human rights even when anything in the human rights don't say it? Makes sense...
2020-09-28 19:22
Yes. Forcing people to do things they otherwise wouldn't want to do unnecessarily is a violation of the principle of human rights.

Your point crumbles in any objective sense by most moderate arguments. School, taxation etc etc. Things that you've defended as necessary in theory, but across the world shown in practice to be in effective only depending on the government. Taxation as long as it's utilized correctly is good. Military conscription, can also be used for good. Finland trains their military in coastal protection and has been used to help stop wildlife threats such as poaching. They can also be bad. They're all just as case by case as is the argument for military conscription. By definition and execution your point is objectively wrong. Human rights were determined by governments. Conscription doesn't violate human rights. They only violate your personal belief. That's why people keep arguing against you. Your argument holds as much weight as any other "opinion" so it can be debated by as many other opinions as possible. To prevent someone arguing your point, you need objective facts. You can't argue the objective fact that governments determine human rights since it's 100% fact. You can't argue the benefits to military forces perfectly, because that argument is impossible also. All you can do is leave your opinion and move on.
2020-10-10 19:06
this is like white people telling black people to be offended by jokes. if the person who actually DID mandatory service sees nothing wrong with it, why are you trying to prove them wrong lol. idiot.
2020-09-29 15:04
if people want to then fine... but conscription into labour or the army shouldn't be considered acceptable by anyone
2020-09-29 18:39
why is school acceptable then?
2020-09-29 18:42
Because it's necessary for a functioning democracy and society in the modern world?
2020-09-29 18:43
can you think of ways that military service could also be beneficial?
2020-09-29 18:44
Sure it can be, but it shouldn't be forced. Especially in ADULTS. Adults have a thing called, you know, individual freedom. Unless aboslutely necessary, something shouldn't be forced
2020-09-29 18:48
if you're straight out of school you're hardly an adult. And you DEFINITELY aren't an adult, so dont speak on it

You are wasting your time there, you could do interships, research more about your future path, literally do anything else that could help you in the long run, but you have to waste your time on that shit when you're young, that's just silly.

I understand your pov but usually right after high school people will take 1 year "vacation" or go to some shitty job so it doesn't really change if you just go to army :D
2020-09-29 20:36
We have a thing in Germany called bundesfreiwilligendienst, you basically work a year for some company, get like 500-900 euro for it and you have time to think what you want to do, I did this and it was awesome. Also did some interships and learned some skills online. You get any money from army ?
2020-09-29 20:44
#316
 |
Finland Slyp3
Yeah, you get 2700euros/for the whole year. Although you don't need to pay for food or living. Now that you have corona they get little bit more money as their vacations are longer but there are less of them. You can also do civil service, where you go work somewhere for state, you get the same amount of money you get from military service but the place you go to work has to get you an apartment for the duration of the serivce

2020-09-28 19:43
I asked because there's a pretty big anti-military sentiment in the US. I think it's because we invade places or keep our military overseas to "protect our interests", and many people see that as unjust. I would imagine in Finland people are more okay with serving because there's a more tangible threat right next door, so you'd really feel more like you're protecting your country. The US really is not at any risk of an invasion.

like the concept behind it , why is it forced and what age is it forced at and for how long? What of your regular life in the service duration ? things like that.

Well Finland is next to a country that has been sometimes pretty aggressive so we need to have defense forces because of that. It's forced because we are a small country and we would have too small reserve if we didn't have forced service (You can still do something else, e.g. be a assistant teacher for 9 months and then you don't need to go to military. 18 years of age for male voluntary and compulsory - and female voluntary - national military and nonmilitary service; service obligation 6-12 months; military obligation to age 60. You need to finish your service by age of 30. Then you will stay in reserve for like 55 or something! Well you usually can go home during weekends (ofc there is weekends when you have to stay there, but like 2/3 times you can go). You also get like 20 extra free days you can use by requesting it and then the captain must approve it. I usually went to club during weekends but I know people who just chilled. Also during the week if you don't have training in forest you will have spare time from like 16 to 22!

hmm , very much interesting! Apologies but i am really not aware about geography neither history of Finland but i understand now that its to have your people ready in case of an assault from another nation. Now you mentioned that the service needs to be finished by age of 30 , that means you can take the 6-12 months service anytime between 18-29 years ? Also what if one successfully manages to evade it even after 30 and is caught later on ?

Well we are next to Russia :) Yeah you can take it between that gap. Well usually Finland will give international arrest warrant and there is instances where interpol has been waiting at the airport and send him back to Finland. Im not exactly sure what would happen to him, but my guess would be that he will either go do the service immediately or go to prison.

I was part of Anti-Aircraft regiment of Helsinki. I was part of division who had this tank radar which in case of war we would locate across southern Finland where we are needed. I really much enjoyed the service. I had amazing service friends whom I'm still good friends with! Ofc you had moments when you would have wanted to be doing anything else than the service but those are good memories now aswell. I at least grew up as an person during the service.

Well its really different in different countries. E.g. in Finland "simputus"(means kinda like unnecessary ordering and maybe like harrasment) is completely forbidden and it doesnt happen anymore almost like all unlike in some other militaries. Thank you and have a good day aswell!

I know my friend from UK and he's going to the Army to become a Commando and heard its 4 years, I've watched some shows on army trainings in UK and they seem a lot tougher than in winter just standing 1 hour smoking a cigarette or enjoying a snus or whatever u do at nigh shift guarding tent but UK army harder training, Fin army more relaxed (mostly coz of corona)
