What makes shawshank redemption stand out is the Acting which is easily a 10/10, the writing is top tier. The brutal realism and Irony. Of course who can forget that amazing last 30 minutes were everything just clicks. You understand why he wanted the hammer, the poster, the bible and so on. Why it mattered he created a fake identity and was a banker. It's genius.

Smilar to the critics I think it's a good movie, perhaps a masterpiece, but that's my subjective view, it's not objective. I can only say the same as in #515: Just cause those critics agree doesnt mean its OBJECTIVELY good. Objectively would mean it's factual, like a sience result. Science is obviously not opinion based.
Movies are a form of creative expression. It's not really possible to objectively rate something in the creative field, as there will always be someone who likes/dislikes it – based on opinions.
And no, the comparison is not stupid.

That's pretty much going against the flow. And calling the Batman franchise (Nolan) overrated is on the same level as calling overrated some of the classics that are being called in this thread just for the sake of saying something unpopular. The TDK trilogy proved that even comic book movies have the potential riveting and engaging. They have really come into their own.

I've seen this a lot and tbh I don't get it. TDK set a super high bar. Not beating it doesn't equal to bad for me. Batman had retired so that was bound to slow down the pace, similarly with how the 5-year span slowed down the pace in Endgame. But I don't mind having a slower pace because we get to see how the events of TDK affected Gotham and Batman himself. Bane was a terrific villain, challenging physically a Batman that's well passed his prime.
Let's not forget Watchmen the movie :) (I do agree on your statement about TDK). Watchmen 2009 is just a masterpiece for so many reasons.

Acting of who? Main cast was great. Idk i watched it last year and liked both the first and second (also with knowledge that humans were supposed to be proccesors not bateries) and i liekd it. Third was little off. But only hate i get about the second is how plastic it looks otherwise they are both great. My opinion ofcourse.

Arrival is one of my favorites in the last couple years. Very emotionally moving and thought provoking, just what I want from great sci-fi. Villenue is a master director/writer.
PS I really like Interstellar and Nolan movies in general.

You have to be stupid to consider arrival a better movie than interstellar. Chances are you're a kid/not mature enough to apreciate Interstellar. The narrative, the deep thought of humanity, the need to sacrifice the present for the future, the way the movie got the physics and space "somewhat real", the music and the performance of the actors. You're dumb.
Arrival is good sci-fi movie, Interstellar is a work of art.

I love both of these films and don't agree with it being so clear-cut as to which one is better. IMO they're both works of art with both Nolan and Villenue poring a massive amount into their craft.
Both are incredibly high-minded while being very human at the same time. Each considers grandiose themes, such as humanity's place in the universe, the impact of time on the human condition, regret and loss, while grounding these themes in the lives of the individual protagonists. Both pack an emotional punch while tackling the relationship between parent and child and both do so in relatable ways.
But for their similarities, they're also very different films. The directors each have a distinct style and pacing that will resonate with people differently. Arrival keeps its story more contained, whereas Interstellar hops from planet to planet and even dimension to dimension. IMO Arrival's script is more focused, keeping with a couple themes and developing them more deeply, while Interstellar's script is perhaps overlong. Interstellar's visual effects are top-tier and awe-inspiring, though Arrival is not far behind.
I think the case can be made for one or the other, but I disagree with anyone who says one is clearly better than the other.

Pulp fiction is a damn good movie, and was revolutionary when it came out. At a time when all movies were complete sterile jack shit, a movie like pulp fiction was revolutionary and that's why it's rated so high. In today's context it might not mean much but it was a big deal during the time it came out.

it is overrated for me personally, this was supposed to be a subjective thread. i expected a lot before watching pulp fiction, maybe i shouldn't have read the reviews beforehand.
casino royale was pretty good imo, rest are rather average at best.
the butterfly effect is not underrated i think, it's actually really good rated by most, same with district 9, but they are not as known i'd agree on that.

I guess you have to take in consideration that the reviews were probably by people that watched it in the 90s. I'm a boomer and watched it probably 95/96 and it was something really fresh. But if you watched it recently I can understand why you think it's overrated.
I agree with you on Casino Royale. It was the only one I enjoyed also.
The Butterfly Effect got a Metascore of 30. I guess District 9 isn't underrated but it's lesser known, true.

I get where you're coming from, but I don't think anyone actually holds James Bond movies in high regard critically speaking - maybe except for one or two of the movies that came out in the late 60s and early 70s.

As a horror fan, it felt really cheesy and stale. Maybe casual viewers thought it was fresh? I'm just surprised the critics liked it as well, since it was so horribly directed. It's just as worthless as everything else associated with Michael Bay.

A well done movie shouldn't make sense if only seen in part. The experience should all tie together; the beginning supporting the end and the end supporting the beginning.

It may be - I haven't seen it.
Sometimes I think screenwriters write their characters as purely representative of something. If the movie is well done and I *trust* the writer knew what they were doing, but I can't figure out what a character's motivation, I try to figure out if the character is symbolic. For instance, a character may represent socialism or capitalism or injustice or mercy, etc. Perhaps that's how Parasite is written.
BTW - I don't particularly like movies that do this at the expense of a relatable character, since it turns the movie into a "message" rather than a "story about people". If my guess about Parasite is true, I probably wouldn't enjoy it.

movie is called as parasite because a poor family infiltrates a clueless rich family and drains money from them.the interesting thing is that everyone does their job perfectly.the kid makes the girl interested in english for the first time ,the girl doesnt know jackshit about babysitting but somehow manages to make the kid calm,the dad is a superb car driver and stuff.
in phase 2, we see a revelation and a lot of chaotic things happen.but if you watch closely you can see that the dad gets really offended when they are hiding under the table during all this mess,the rich man talks about how the room smells of the car driver which is bad.we can see the conclusion that even if dad did his job perfectly, the rich guy saw him inferior just because of his smell(smell is metaphor for poorness)
then there is the sequence where a flood happens and the family has to spend the night in a gym.the next day,dad has to rush back to rich family so the rich mom could do some "shopping" in that car scene first the mom opens the car window because the driver is smelly and then talks about how the rain yesterday was superb as it gave a great look to the grass.yes the same rain that flooded the car driver's home and made him stay at gym.you can also see in this part that the driver gets pissed off.
then the birthday sequence cements the fact that the rich family finds their employees(poor family) inferior.the girl is fucking dying and the rich businessman cares about his son's measly shock attack which wouldnt affect the kid at all, more important.the dad does something he shouldnt have done and stabs him in the fury he gathered last 2-3 days.

That's kind of the point. In order for you to think a movie is "over-rated" it has to be highly rated to begin with. So saying something like "Terminator: Salvation is sooo over-rated cuz it's actually a dumb movie." doesn't make sense. So yeah, the movies people will list here are going to be highly acclaimed/popular films, and yeah, the commenter is going to be disagreeing with that popular opinion.

I made myself more clear in my reply a few comments above. Some users here post a big list of those movies to the point it can’t be taken seriously.
Some people also confuse dislike with overrated. Let me give you two distinct examples:
Shutter Island
The Matrix
Both are great movies but calling The Matrix overrated is “harder” because it has become a staple of pop culture. It’s a movie known to everyone, seen by everyone. It’s a movie that set a standard for action. A script that’s completely solid. A justification is kinda in order to call a movie like that overrated. Shutter Island is just another great movie with a high rating so it’s easier to accept and understand someone else’s opinion.

Shutter Island is a true masterpiece when you learn to read the little details, not only in dialogue and plot, but also metaphorically. I have watched it like 10 times and each time you uncover a new little detail. The film is engineered to be open to interpretation with no definitive ending, which bothers many people accustomed to ordinary films with ordinary plots. The film is a real joy if you like to reflect and actually put your brain to use while watching a movie.

Calling "underrated" a movie from the most hipster/nerdy loved director like Terence Mallick is a BIIIIT of an overstatement. You can ask to a university teacher and to a plumber what they think about Mallick and both of them will answer you he is an absolute genius, so it's quite brave call "underrated" a film by Mallick.

Only very few people have ever seen the movie. And the ones that have typically feel kinda indifferent about it and say they liked either "Saving private Ryan" or "Apocalypse Now" much better. Just have a look at the IMDB or rottentomatoes ratings and reviews. Clearly underrated if you ask me. Besides Mallick wasn't all that hyped back then so that probably had less influence on the ratings made at the time. Could be fun to check whether later ratings are higher than the earlier ones.

That can be true but i can assure you that if u make your research about the youngsters (20/30 yo) in the middle/upper class of Europe (university students expecially) Mallick is an absolute must...its trendy for them, is like hearing a music band from Nepal that no one else know. It's a hipster movie director and is very appreciated in some particular clusters of young people. That's why i will not say he is underrated.

I also only saw it a few years ago. I imagine you are a bit older than the people posting hate for classics, or maybe you just consume media differently than most people today.
People have really short attention spans and need to be spoon fed a simple plotline that uses simple techniques to make you feel something. If you look at Fight club or the godfather with those lenses, it is easy to disrespect their value in cultural history.

I feel asleep towards the end when they do scifi effects for 20min or smth, woke up again towards the end when he was in the house.
Only "good" part of the movie is the 5min with Hal 9000, watch those if anything.
to me there are movies that are hard to get through but after a while they kinda grow on you and you get to like them more than before and that's one of those movies, so if you only wanna get entertained then no, but if you're looking for something more then yes

Way to much Abba/musical in that movie for my taste.

Hard to take such a statement seriously, when everyone who knows these guys' careers knows that the range of their films is fucking huge, except for Arnold - and even his movies include legit masterpieces as well as dumpster fires.
Jackie Chan's late 80s and 90s films like Armour of God and Rumble in the Bronx are great films, not in the same category as his 2010s buddy movies.
And you can't really say that First Blood or Rocky 1 & 2 are similar to god damn Escape plan or Driven because all of them have Stallone in the lead.
You need to see more movies.

I agree that TRON is a classic hacker movie of types, totally underrated. There's Hackers from 1995 that is an instant classic too. One for the underrated movies is Dark Star, which is a deliriously good movie in every aspect, the screenplay, the acting cinematography, etc., all very underground. This requires to state the classic hacker movies War Games and Swordfish. Totally underrated movies of their times.
The whole point is that people talk about mainstream movies mostly. Spend some time getting to know stuff which is a bit more strange.

Harry Potter series the main problems with it are shit that we wanted to be explained was either not done or done poorly the Movies were nowhere near as good as the Books and frankly there was so many things i wish was explained but was not also there was a really lazy plot hole a plot hole so massive that literally would have completely canceled out the entire events of the books remember when Heromine revealed that she was using the time turner to move through time well when you realize they could travel back in time by spinning it literally you could have spun it like 200,000 times gone back like 50-70 years in the past assassinated Tom Riddle and prevented all the bad shit from happening i know i know they were warned bad things happen to wizards who abuse time yada yada but for Christ sake surly tf that could not be anywhere near as bad as what ended up happening Edit: oh i forgot youtube.com/watch?v=YsYWT5Q_R_w this video explains everything i just said far better

Personally the only movie i dislike that i can remember is Donnie Darko. Disliked how its just a kids movie with morbid scenes and ambience. Also feel like the plot and the logic behind time travel in it or whatever is dumb.
