Football idea

Anyone have any thoughts on like a continental cup, like the world cup but instead of nations it's continents. Obviously Europe and South America would be heavy favourites pretty much every year, but I think Africa could upset sometimes, plus there'd only be like 6 teams so every team could actually play in the cup. Interested in what teams people would like to see from their continent too.

Topics are hidden when running Sport mode.
That sounds really cool but I dont think there is enough time for it in a year. You know, players have to be allowed to leave by the clubs they represent and that doesn't always happen. Sooo many other competitions and qualifiers to play in a year, I doubt there is enough time.

yeah that's an aspect i hadn't even thought of tbh, but there wouldn't be too many games purely by virtue of there only being 6 teams

You could probably do it but it would most likely have to be a small thing with only a couple of games and the whole competition would have to be over in less than a week or something like that.

how would that affect it? continents are geographical locations, not political at all, plus there's only a handful of nations that span multiple continents, of course your country being one of them, and a simple rule of 'you're part of the continent your capital is in', or 'you're aprt of the continent the majority of your population is in'

That would be fun for about 10 nations

So just like the world cup where only a handful of nations actually stand a chance? Or the champions league where only a handful of teams actually stand a chance? I don't think that's a problem that's exclusive to the idea
2020-10-18 19:59
Stand the chance to do what? Win the world cup? Well yeah, obviously. Sweden didn't win the last world cup but I still had a very good time watching a quarter finals run. What about the champions league? You don't even get to the champions league without playing at a national level.

If you mean from a watcher's perspective then I think a South America vs Europe team would be pretty cool to watch or an upset match from one of the worse off continents
2020-10-18 20:06
I'm not saying it's a bad idea but I don't see why anyone would rather watch that than the World Cup or regional tournaments unless you're from a country like Latvia that doesn't even qualify for those

look my flag man I'm from a country like Latvia that doesn't even qualify :( regardless I really want to see a Europe vs South America and this was the only way I could think of that didn't exclude the rest of the world, plus I think the main problem of African nations during the world cup is the fact that each nation only has a couple of good players but an overall average team

I aren't think you're Hong Kongian

Then I see why you'd be interested in the idea but it's a no from me and most football nations

Surely if anything it'd be the other way around, there'd be no point in watching from a nation that couldn't even get into their continental team because they have no representation. Understand your opinion on not wanting to watch it, each to their own :)
2020-10-18 20:16
That'd be unfair because you all know Africans are superior physically

People only care about football in America. Other countries suck at it. You should do a soccer cup instead.

Not sure, there could be a way to elect a manager and whoever's the manager would obviously make the team sheet
2020-10-18 20:02
i mean it would have to be a free manager, i don't think they would get a manager which is already coaching, it's a nice ideea but kinda impossible to make.

it's only for a few games and obviously managers can't be elected if they don't put themselves forward so it would be on a 'want to' basis or it could just be any national team manager, each manager or whatever votes for a manager within their respective continent there's plenty of ideas for it, not in any way an 'impossible task'
2020-10-18 20:22
continental federations internal voting or something like that. Candidate managers should meet some requirements (years of experience, titles, etc)
2020-10-18 20:16
Well, that's Europe domination and that tournament would be made out of 6 teams at best so no one would bother. My dream concept is that every federation makes the best squad from their own league and make a world/European cup out of it. That would damage countries like Croatia or Portugal but that would be interesting, I'd like to see Muslera representing Turkey.

South America could easily stand up against Europe and beat them consistently, and I think Africa has good upset potential, maybe even Asia could have an ok squad. The main problem I see is obviously what you pointed out, very few teams so not many matches.
2020-10-18 20:08
with a proper ruleset it would be interesting, though as someone said, I doubt its possible to find a date on the year to play it.
2020-10-18 20:14
I think it'd be a great idea to start having mixed leagues for clubs. Like have a UEFA clone but allow 1 or 2 South American clubs. Allow 2 Afrikan clubs in the American League (Copa Libertadores) and 1 Asian club probably. This would be most interesting.

Problem I see with the club way of doing things is the best player from a nation (outside of the top 4 leagues) don't necessarily play in their respective region. The best asian, north american, and african players would be demolishing their country's 'representatives' in a sense.
2020-10-18 20:25
there is something somewhat similiar, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_Club_World_Cu.. most people see it just as pre season games.
2020-10-18 20:25
The clubs wc is awesome, but is just 3 matches, is not like having a real league. I think there's at least 4 south american teams that could consistently make playoffs in UCL.
2020-10-18 20:27
yeah would be nice to see clubs like boca, river plate or flamengo.
