I have horrible speech and a stutter
 |
Netherlands PaasWaas
And i get bullied at work. People laugh at me, if i talk somewhere. I do go to speech therapy and psychologist. I cant even say a single world and i barely talk because i know i cant talk and cant even say a single word. Why do people make jokes about this and laugh at me, or bully me?

It can be very hard to joke about these things if you have painful memories about it, about people picking on you and you're unable to defend yourself or do anything about it.

Joking about it is the best defence. I speak from own experience. People will think you realize it and you are over it, even if it actually isn't that way.

Not necessarily mate, it's especially hard when you try and joke about something so confidence related like your voice. People will pick up on that shit so fast if you try and joke about it and pick you apart even if you try. Besides, how are you going to joke about your voice? For example I'm deaf, I could easily joke about that IRL because it's not a confidence related thing. My voice, man that's a completely different story, you can't even make a voice related joke really.

stutter only gets better or dissapears, when you start making jokes at those who made jokes about you, you may even find a good friend, it's a banter, it's a journey, it's a change of mindset, if he holds anger on those pickings, he will never cure stutter, people give him a reason to improve, get better, but he ain;t using it, and still stutters, because it's all about mindset, how you react, if you learn to react the right way, your mind heals
2020-10-28 02:47
1 reply
You say that, but it's very hard. Also these people are more grown up (at work) so what you say about making good friends does not really apply in this case.. if they're a cunt as an adult, you can't really do anything because they never grew out of that mindset. I don't know whether to encourage something like joking about it as that in itself leaves you almost more vulnerable when people pick on that you're trying to get over it and make it more cruel on you. People have done that and it can be an even worse feeling than the initial "W-what? S-S-Sorry s-s-say t-that a-a-again?" joke.

Yeah psychologily im fucked. Im on so many meds to feel good. I cant even go to a shop to ask for something because i know its not coming out, so i just dont go shopping. I cant make phone calls. Cant do anything. And the people laughing and bullying makes this 100x worse. My life fucking sucks ass.
2020-10-27 17:40
Keep up the grind at the speech therapist / psychologist. Try to talk to yourself at home, maybe walk up and down just reading sentences from a newspaper or whatever, the appointments won't do everything for you. Become comfortable with hearing your own voice, and when you become more comfortable and confident, your ability to be relaxed in conversation with another person will improve. It won't be instant and it will take a lot of practice, even years. I had to do speech therapy for years at school just for people to understand me, now everyone I speak to understands me more or less. The more you practice, the more you'll be comfortable with it, and if you make a mistake it's easier to laugh it off when you've already worked towards it. Good luck man.

In my experience I would spend hours just talking to myself as practice reading from some paper and focusing on the parts I needed to focus on. It is a major blow every time someone mentions something wrong with your voice and I can definitely relate to that because you can't really do anything about it and it's a really shitty feeling. If you have someone around, maybe family or a close friend that you know you can trust, maybe you could try and talk to these people over the phone or in real life? You have to build up your confidence somewhere and I think it would be pretty ideal to do it that way.

Be the first one to make fun of yourself, that way you own it. Not that you would have to, but because some people are just too stupid it's probably the easiest way. I have a tendency to always laugh along if someone makes fun of me. Only in a few moments I realize I shouldn't have laughed, maybe even look a bit annoyed, to show I didn't appreciate it. Something I'm working on. Edit: It's good to be able to laugh at yourself, but of course not everything should be tolerated

2020-10-27 18:31
the only choise you have is to laugh at your self in front of them retards then they will thing you are not taking it bad the only reason people do shit like this is because they hate they lifes and want to see somebody on a worse position make them thing you dont care and they will get bored eventualy if they feel your pain they will keep doing it stupid subhumans , laugh at your self and show confidence they will start to envy you even more and lets hope some of them suicide when they see you doing better than them stay strong dont care (ore atleast act like you dont)

Sometimes I stutter a word or two if I'm trynna talk fast and if I focus too hard on what I'm about to say and/or the next word I'm gonna say mid sentence. Basically you're thinking too hard and need to get into the habit of not thinking about it, and slowing down your speech and emphasizing words. *I'd recommend practicing mouth exercising, try different tongue twisters slowly and then increase speed *When you speak, let your words start from or reverberate in your throat, hard to explain but it kinda eases how the word comes out. You'll notice you can "start" your words from the front or middle of the mouth, and this is where slip ups can happen. I have to sometimes consciously focus on using my throat and it helps a lot. You need to makes sure you open your mouth wider and clearly enunciate words using your throat. *For each word, slightly emphasize/rest on the last alphabet of the word. In below couple examples, the sounds after the hyphen are very subtle but adding that little bit helps with overall enunciation: "fact-th" "thing-gh" (You don't exaggerate them but it will help contribute to speaking slower, taking your time with words, and you'll speak more eloquently. Try watching videos from a narrator or something, you'll hear that atleast for English). *Read everything out to yourself online if you're by yourself, as you're scrolling and reading whatever on your phone or computer. And focus on speaking slowly and smoothly. *Watch videos of good speakers and repeat after them to follow along.

Voice and talent for smooth speech is not something anybody choose. People are feeling better about thelmselves creating comedy out of these things. It helps them to cure their own problems. I would do something to help you, but we are not even from the same state. Good luck with your improvements, stay hard, know your value and dont show people insecurities.

use it for conversation starter, and continuation, if you don't own it yourself, nobody will help, when i was stuttering, i started make jokes at them, and my stutter was gone, cause i felt like i bit them back, but on my own way, first learn to calm yourself during those jokes, then you will start think clearer, and be more comfortable next time they make a joke, they pick on you, cause they don't have such problem, and never had maybe, thinking you different, but you need to laugh it off, nobody wants a depressed interaction, mainly people want to feel a good interaction, is it a comical situation or serious. It always can be worse, some people don't have anus hole, and can't shit, so they need to do operation, ya know what i mean, so learn to enjoy life until it lasts

is it caused by anxiety or do you have a lesion somewhere in your brain that literally renders you unable to speak properly? if its the former you should be able to work on it, maybe with beta blockers or something similar. Speach impairment caused by brainlesions can be permanent, however its possible to improve depending on its location afaik. but I see youre already seeing help, so I hope thatll help you. Psychological proccesses can take long. Sometimes it might seem that they don't have any effect whatsoever, but don't give up too soon. Give it time and put actual effort into improving yourself (as in, don't just do the bare minimum they tell you or even less). If it really is the case, maybe you could look up what people with similiar conditions as you have done to cope with their problem. The only very renown client that comes to mind is Mr. Tan (google mr tan psychology). But I can't remember if that case actually talks about how to improve the clients quality of life. I take that "you cant even say a single word" is heavily exaggerated? Otherwise I don't see how speach therapy and regular therapy work if you can't communicate with those therapists. Even people that have huge brain lesions (where a big part of their brain is functionally dead) can often still say a single word or more. Also, you apparently are still able to make fully functioning sentences, so a brain lesion isnt a logical assumption here. So I assume its either psychological or an issue with your vocal cords. If it really as you say, maybe you could look up what people with similiar conditions as you have done to cope with their problem. The only very renown client that comes to mind is Mr. Tan (google mr tan psychology). But I can't remember if that case actually talks about how to improve the clients quality of life. People are stupid and mean, that won't change sadly.

to OP: I just reread your post and I realize now that I missunderstood what your issues are: Youre stuttering so badly that its hard for you to utter any word. Man that really sucks. I assume its anxiety, something which can be worked on. Do you stutter when youre alone just as much? If so, I'd recommend staying in therapy and working hard to try and improve it. Otherwise use your therapy to find ways on how to cope with your situation. Maybe find a job you can do from home for example. I wish you the best of luck.
2020-10-28 05:26
You need to find confidence so that you don't care what others think. There are different ways to get it. Best way for you is, do all the things you don't do, and show them your balls. Other way do sth what you want and become good at it so your self confidence rises and infect probably your other issue in a positive way.

this might be weird but if it is hard to introduce yourself to people or start conversations with people you don't know, it might help to get a card that mentions you have a stutter. That way people can understand it without you needing to explain it.
