I never said that any of these are less useful, spanish/french and especially an international language are obviously more beneficial than japanese. But would u say the same about mandarin too? Even though there are millions of canadian/american/australian born chinese people, the main reason why mandarin is worth learning is international business relations and simply Chinas global influence

Population is irrelevant. You want to learn japanese if you want to do business/career in japan someday. While Russian, even if they have more population, you don't really want to waste your time learning russian since it wont benefit you in the future unless you want to go to russia to do business or career which is unlikely.

Japanese and russians speak great english and most people doing business in these foreign countries would communicate in English. You should still learn about their culture though, but learning Japanese beause you want to do business with Japanese companies/people is definitely not needed.
2020-11-24 15:00

It is needed. Top companies would rather hire an english speaker that knows japanese than hiring a local that can barely speak english. I work in finance here in Japan for more than 5 years now and I recieve a lot of offers just because of my Japanese language qualification.

Of course if you're getting a job and living in said country you need to speak said language. You can still do business with companies in foreign countries without moving there.

Yes, but i'm comparing what's more useful for regular person like most of us here. Learning Japanese is way more important than learning Russian just because of the opportunity you can get in one of the most economically stable country in the world.

If you know russian you can communicate pretty much in all of eastern Europe and the Balkan region as well as in turkey. It is a really popular language around here, especially among the older population
2020-11-24 15:03
I never said it wasn't. I speak a little bit of it myself (japanese descendency) but it is only useful for contacting my grandfolks that have a hard time speaking PT-Br since they never really wanted to learn it, even tho they lived here for 80 years. It's the same as Chinese, it is only useful for specifics or if you're living there.. usually goes English > Spanish > the rest.. commenting on #48, lots of my customers are Chinese and Korean and they don't even use their language between themselves, imagine with me.

It doesnt matter where u live, I am not a businessman so I dont need mandarin that much. Mandrain is the most fluently spoken because of their population and nothing else. There are more native portuguese speakers than the russian ones, I doubt that anyone would disagree that russian is more useful than portuguese for obvious reasons.
2020-11-24 17:24

The difference in french and german is a 1:7 and 1:10. China is a massive market and will gain much more influence in the future besides your own sentence contradicts itself "There are more native portuguese speakers than the russian ones, I doubt that anyone would disagree that russian is more useful than portuguese for obvious reasons." - Portuguese is much more important to learn in say Argentina because it neighbours a large portuguese speaking country. Either placement matters or it doesn't, you do not have the right to pick and choose. Mandarin chinese is spoken by more than 1 and a half billion people. German is spoken fluently by about 150 million, french is 200 million. Chinese should overwhelmingly outperform german and french but it doesn't because we are living in europe. Because chinese is much harder to learn and so on

I do have the right because I simply understand that Russia has a huge impact on the world as well as big communities in the USA, Canada, Germany, Israel, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and lots of CIS countries that even learn russian in their schools. And Portuguese? Just because Brazil is big? Do u really think that argentinos care about portuguese when they speak spanish just like any other SA country? Mandarin is the second "best" language to learn, you are right, but it really depends on the person as well. I personally think that an average EU citizen will not need mandarin as much as french or german unless he is thinking about to start a business. But if I had to create an "overall" ranking I would easily put mandarin on the 2nd place right after English
2020-11-24 18:07
1 reply
Russia does have large influence, that's correct but CIS countries don't tend to speak russian and if you start speaking Russian to a Ukranian or Polish they will most likely take it as an insult. The other CIS countries (Except Belarus) hate Russia and even if you can learn it in school the percent that speak it is much smaller than you would think, in Poland only 6.2% can speak another language fluently as an example. Brazil is very large, 210 million people live in brazil making it a lot larger than russia at 145 million. Besides do you think danes love germans? No, but germany is Denmark largest trade partner. Brazil is every south american countries largest trade partner including argentina. So we agree? The post was made by a russian on a platform for a worldwide audience. It does depend on the person, a lot. That's why objectively saying what language is most important is hard. Yes, the average EU citizen will probably find more need in German and French i agree.

Useful for what? Tbh you only need 3 languages, your mother tongue, English for business and travel and the third if you decide to move to europe mainland you’re gonna need to learn the country language eventually or you’ll be stuck on expats circles. If you work in healthcare or any sort of job that require communication with natives, the third is required and not even optional in this side of the world (Probably you’d survive in Netherlands).

English. The rest depends on person's circumstances. e.g. Why the fuck would you put Spanish in your list when you probably don't even have your (Russian passport) international travelling document on hand, let alone plans going to Mexico or any SA country. People putting French, hello, are you going to move to northern / central Africa or something? Wanna explore what refugees are escaping from? Yeah, Mandarin, while sitting on your ass in western EU. What's in your head? Wanna get better idea what the item description says on TianMao (AliBaba)? Anyways, learn whatever language you want / need. Just don't do it because "x" is more spoken than "y".
