You make a good point. Often I look at the news and because I've been so compartmentalised by the constant 'SHOCKING' stories around the world, I often forget that this is happening to real people. Yet, I would still advise against seeking out videos such as the ones described you, because I simply don't think it is good for your mental health; having perspective on these issues is fine, but becoming desensitised to them by the sheer amount that you watch them isn't.
In my opinion, humans must hold a certain amount of 'disgust' for these things, and I believe that personally, overloading your brain with such gory imagery will make you apathetic to these things, rather than sympathetic.
This does not mean that I believe we shouldn't at least see what is happening, but doing this for the sole sake of trying to gain perspective seems wrong to me.
