Can someone explain to me what do people find so apealing for animes?
I tried to force myself watching it with 3 different animes (tokyo ggoul, deathnite and steins;gate).
I just cant stand the stupid naration and the weird faces/noises they do. Today I watched 2 epa of steins gate and while the plot was somewhat intresting its pretty much impossible to watch

As someone who has watched a decent amount of anime, I can tell you watched 3 very similar shows. They are all narrations, and I found all of them to have a pretty slow moving story, which is I didn't really like them either. There are definitely lots of good ones. What kinds of things do you like, I could recommend a couple that you would like more.

no one forces you to watch fillers. there are many websites that tell you clearly what episodes are fillers. just google "<anime name> filler list" and thats it. and no they arent 90% filler, not even 50% and even some of those fillers have nice scenes.

the story is very mediocre, i really like it still and all the characters, but 50% is just crying after sasuke, then you have the war after 1k filler episodes with a bad pacing in my opinion idk
masashi kishimoto had the potential of creating a 10/10 show with the idea of ninjas living in different cities, the jutsus and stuff, but in the end if i look at naruto objectively i just think it's a mediocre show that has it's moments here and there.
I still really enjoy it, don't get me wrong, but it's pretty overrated in my opinion.

If you give bad movies a pass because “its just a kids movie” this encourages more bad movies to be made. Pixar in its prime proves that kids movie and good movie are not mutually exclusive. Why prioritize mediocrity?

Appealing to both children and adults is a more difficult challenge. It’s super easy to make children's content. Have you ever revisited a show you watched as a kid and thought “wtf is this?”? Which makes me appreciate the content I can revisit and watch without cringing the whole time. I just think that people should recognize that most kids content is shlock and stop giving it a pass. Filmmakers CAN do better, and that should be encouraged, which cannot happen if you refuse to criticize content that happens to appeal to a younger demographic.

I haven't watched that many animes I'm not a weeb, but you may like psycho pass, I remember it as more "normal"
Like #17 said, monster is probably a show that you would enjoy, it's one of the greats in the mystery genre. It's a bit slow, but worth it. Psycho-Pass is good if you want more action mixed in with a dystopian future kind of story. I enjoyed both of those greatly

I'd start with Attack on Titan.
I couldn't stand Steins Gate and I'm a fan of a lot of different anime.
If you like mystery series then Monster is a good anime. You can find it on anime vibe (DOT) wtf
I'm kind of geek IRL and I like anime so Steins:Gate seems like perfect match for me but for some reason I gave up after few episodes. Maybe too soon but something was not right for me. I will try again some time for sure because there must be something good about it that I didn't discover yet if so many people recommend it.
As for other anime recommendations definitely Attack on Titan and Death Note are holding 1st place together and there is no title good enough for 2nd place. I love some other animes but I know they are not perfect and not everybody will like them so I can't put them close to those 2 titles which I think are just top notch and with very little imperfections.

Not all anime are suitable for beginners, even if they're "best".
It is great. But you have to watch both seasons. I almost gave up on episode 7-8. I aksed my friend that it is boring cheesy anime. They told me to keep watching it upto 12-15 episodes. I trust them so I watched. It was amazing.
After watching s2. I was glad that they made those first 9 episodes that I found boring. It all make sense then.

"treat like an adult: attack on titan" Tags: SHOUNEN. I don't think adult is the best way to call it considering it brands itself as shounen aka teenage boy genre. Doesn't mean it's not good, definitely one of the best animes and the manga is even better, but don't call it what it isn't.

Not watching anime for 1+ year, so can't recommend anything that decent from my memory.
SAO is probably the mainstream no one would watch already.
Most of my seen animes were isekai's because that was a trend.
One Punch Man is a good comedy (not the season 2 though).
No Game No Life is a comedy also.
You can watch Barakamon, and Handa-kun (can't name it like the season 2).
But if you don't like the comedy, then sorry I can't recommend anything else.

There are so many talented japanese writers/mangakas, buy they insist on adapting great stories for the taste of anime/weeb community, their fanservice is so repetitive and dumb. Creators should target adult/mature audience only.

Got to sell that merch. It's all about the merch. Even grim-themed anime like AoT have the same tropes. They characterize all characters via these tropes so that weebs can immediately pick their favorites and then buy merchandise of the characters they prefer.

Like many others in this thread have said Attack on Titan is one of the best animes for people that dont usually watch anime. Great story with actual fulfilling answers to mysteries set up early in the show. The premise may look cliche - huge monsters eating humans - but it is so much more than that.

Look these up f something catches your eyes try it monster, 20th century boy, angel densetsu, mob psycho, one punch man, samurai champloo, cowboy bebop, slam dunk (sports basketball), uchuu kyoudai, baccano and parasyte overall if you have no problem watching the animations you just have to look. plenty of different things out there.

I think the problem of Steins;Gate for new anime watchers is that it rides a lot on the otaku culture of japan. For people not used to it, it can take away a lot from the anime, considering the watcher is also expected to understand quite a few references as well.

If you watched western cartoons/movies/series your whole life and know nothing about Japanese culture/mentality of course you will need some time to get used to anime or Asian movies.

I used to watch a lot of series/movies. Most of them are too bad nowadays, so I switched to anime 1-2 years ago, although there is a lot of garbage too. Same with books and other similar forms of entertainment though. But at least there is enough of decent anime I haven't watched yet.

To be fair, Steins;Gate is really confusing at the start, but it's a fantastic show imo. Death Note and Steins;Gate are two of my favourites, Tokyo Ghoul isn't bad either. Maybe anime just isn't for you, but there are others to try out; Attack on Titan, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Hunter x Hunter are really popular and well-received ones that I personally approve of. Just look up the premise and decide whether they sound potentially interesting.
Try the Great Pretender (very underrated anime), Attack on Titan, and The Promised Neverland. None of the weird stuff many people hate about animes in any of these. Just great stories all around. I absolutely love Steins;Gate, but it is very slice of life heavy in the first half. Turns into an incredible story later on, but I can understand why some people might not fancy it. Tokyo Ghoul supposedly has a terrible anime adaptation from the manga, so steer clear of that.

I felt disgusted the short time i spent trying to watch anime. You described it perfectly, just like i would.
No doubt in my mind that beginning to watch anime at a young enough age could scramble someone’s brain some way, the more weird animes anyway.
try reading the manga, i read death note manga but i can't stand the anime. with manga u can read at ur own pace, with anime sometimes it feels a bit too slow
i can understand your feelings as your pick for first titles to watch was not so good. SteinsGate is one of the best animes for me, but i think it would be hard to watch this one as one of the first titles when anime is strange thing to you. Try to watch Haikyuu, as one of realistic animes and mb if you like it, then mb u will get used to anime stylistics. Also can advice Kaiji, but this one have very strange drawing
