I don't think it really matters. I use a local credit union though, not a bank.

is there a significant difference between a credit union and a bank?

Credit Unions have lower rates for loans and I believe they offer higher interest rates for savings accounts. Banks are for profit and Credit Unions are usually if not always non-profit.

Might be different in Canada but you also have to pay membership fees and you need to maintain a higher minimum account balance. I think it really depends on what you want to do with your money--do you want to take advantage of the interest rates of credit unions and grow your money, or are you just looking for a place to store money

generally speaking, yes. It might be different in the US where there are potentially more credit unions offering competitive rates, but that's the general gist of it. If you're looking for storage, I'd advise sticking with banks to avoid the fees. I'd say look online, write a bunch of questions and arrange a telephone meeting with banks that you're interested in, maybe they could offer pretty good perks like no minimums and fees
