School system is outdated. Today we require a lot of thinking and finding out what to do by ourselves and not just getting orders from someone. One of the reasons why so many people hate school and mostly high school. One of the main differences between primary and high school is the learning and studying for tests. In primary school we didn't have that so we were a lot happier but as we grow older we lose more free time and happiness

Depends. When you're studying a certain field in high school / at uni you gotta remember a lot of things that you will need once you start working in said field. I think there are bigger problems when it comes to the education system than this.

If you study law for example you do have to memorize a lot of things, but in school we memorized a lot of useless things that would have been better if it was something practical (in literature for example)

This is a style of teaching based on that people have an internal drive to grow and learn. They are simply guiding you while learning.

Some subjects are more dependent on memory than others You can try to remember calculus all you want, it would be far easier if you understand it first...

No, not really, as I've explained mathematics is an example of a subject which is more about understanding So are Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Economics, Philosophy, Psychology, and many others
2021-02-22 10:37
You are talking as if there's no memorization involved. You can't integrate without knowing the integration values. In maths you can memorize the steps or the formula. It's not without memorization.
2021-02-22 17:01
2 replies
Of course you have to memorize something, but you have to memorize something when you do anything. Same argument goes for doing the dishes, as you have to memorize the sequence of doing the dishes. However, my main argument is that understanding of the concepts is more important, as you can remember the rules (or formulas for that matter), but once you see an equation that is outside the norm, you wouldn't be able to solve it purely from memorizing the formulas, as you have to understand how to use them, and apply them properly
2021-02-24 21:45

Yeah you can't by heart maths entirely.I get you.memory still plays a signficant role as far as i believe.

yeah but the large majority of final exams are essay based, so you clearly need to develop skills and not just memorise things to get full marks analysis is needed not just stating the obvious or just memorised information

school is natural selection, if you don't succeed you can just do a manual work that is as paid as the job you'll get after a degree. So if you make bad decisions, school sucks, but if you do, you'll succeed no matter what.

Make the kids specialised earlier so they come out of school more knowledgable about 4 things than just alright* at 8. This helps out all the useless shit and makes the average student do what they’re more interested in

We can see that most of the students and younger people in society lack a solid base of knowledge. Concise geography, calculus, et cetera. If you take away that because somebody doesn't enjoy it, you'll end up with a disfunctional part of society.

In the Netherlands we have 3 years of everything, then you can choose a package which you follow 2-3 years which is a specialization of some sort. Is that something you want?
2021-02-22 13:12

Yeah but the UK has outdated education. I think the thing they’ve got in Germany (might be in other countries) divides the children much better. Not only can you specialise in subjects but there is also a place to learn non-academic skills
2021-02-22 19:24
school absolutely useless nowadays. everyone who wants knowledge about something, will probably get faster knowledge from 2 weeks on the internet than 5 years of school. school is nice to form friendships and socialize. thats literally the only reason i see school being good for nowadays. autoditact learning is 100 times better. i learned from 10 youtube videos more astronomy and things about our planets than in 4 years school.

It's about teachers, my biology teacher was basically like David Attenborough, super hyped for what he was teaching and he lived for it. So even though I would never think of liking that subject I kinda got dragged into the hype. and then there was my math teacher just standing there and acting like some complete robot and ofc i never liked math.

As a teacher myself, I agree that intelligence should be more integrated into the school system. That being said, we can already see the results that came from school softening up and being less based on memory. People not knowing where Lithuania is, cashiers not being able to calculate from the top of their head, and all sorts of concrete knowledge that people should whip up from under their sleeve that's just not happening anymore. The memory based system should be different, rather than changed. Instead of bashing in capitals in a classroom, use a Google Earth tour and make a quiz for groups. Instead of giving math class from the books, go outside and make exercises based on the amount of points they score.

Uh yes that's true! I give class in elementary/primary school, the last class before they go to middle/high school. My students are 12-13. I do think that all of this is mostly applicable to any school system or level.
2021-02-22 11:10
But isn't that the parents' fault rather than the schools or teacher's fault? Like I see so many kids have 0 discipline 0 self esteem 0 self worth. Like I'm playing Cs with a 15 year old kid who's playing till 4 -5 in the morning everyday screaming at his parents cuz he don't wanna go to school or do homework, if I did that back in the days I would get slapped on my cheek and put under the cold shower.

I think the parents and environment are certainly one of the problems. My parents listened to their parents, I listened to my parents, and I see that a lot of the younger people (even my age, 18) just go "Eww I hate school" and throw it away, while in reality, it isn't all that bad, their mentality is just bad.

+1 my brother does all sorts of shit it'd get slapped the shit out of for doing. Imo parenting went from very strict to extremely lax and will let their child do things they would've been punished for. And by let I mean these "verbal warnings" that on parents give. how can IQ be genetic. when IQ isn't even a real thing? mayb ur hormones effect the sharpness of ur mind and the way u think. but thats about it. reading 1 book a week instead of playing video games all day will already make the society standart of ur IQ 200

what is IQ then? u think caveman came out of the cave and had high IQ ? its literally something they invented to meassure ur intelligence and intelligence is mostly just learning thinigs, ofc u can be gifted to understand and learn faster but thats another thing and has nothing to do with IQ. see it that way society give u some formula to calculate ur body index and standart for females is 90 60 90 u have naturally gifted woman who can eat whatever the fuck they want and keep 90 60 90 and then u have chicks that already go over 90 60 90 by looking at a burger.

School is a training ground to be a bot and work for the boss. Tables facing a person directing orders, you're told when to go for lunch and come back, you can't leave most schools and fenced off like a prison. You're trained to become a proffesional worker taking orders from a boss who earns x10+ more than you and you are rewards for obedience, most people who "make it" don't have educations. Then there is higher "education" much of the same which puts you in debt to your 30's in some educations into your 40's so you are locked in.

Not true at all. Memory is like 30-40% of what is required. Attitude is needed to get good grades, understanding is needed, application is needed to link your knowledge to real-life scenarios and questions. Life skills and communication skills are taught at school. So don't say school is a problem / bad because you aren't good at it and blame it on 'memory'.

what school does is it teaches you to deal with problem whether they be of a social nature or logical such as math. Sure, many people say that they won't use calculus in their lives and they are probably correct. However, school teaches you to be able to learn whatever is necessary to get by. That is what separates educated people from others - you give them a task and they will complete it somehow, no matter whether you need to write an essay about methanol or figure out how to pay bills or file taxes or something like that. This is my opinion but I've also seen it prove itself in my life. Many of my friends in school, no matter what their hobbies or passtimes may be, can deal with a nasty essay or answer questions about literature.

It's mostly effort based, if you care about it and want to try, it's ez, if you're smart but don't care, you'll get by

We should be doing things that we care about more. For example if I love computer science, why would I have to take so many classes in environmental science? Like sure we should all know some history and science, math and reading is essential. But we shouldn't have to like go so in depth

it should be balanced between memory and intelligence

You'all are missing the point of school, cause hltv is a bunch of >20yo's obviously. Schools aren't ment to give you knowledge to begin with, they're used to make small guys like you executive and obligatory, otherwise employer will see no use in you. That's why in rich kids schools none of this compulsion happening, because these kids aren't meant to serve like most of you.
