"Feelings are just algorithms"

Just finished reading "Sapiens - A Brief History of Humankind" by Dr. Yuval Harari. This book fascinated me in a way, no book ive previously read, has managed to do. From the moment the first humans left their tree to live on the ground and conquer the world to the technological revoultion of the 21st century. He writes in a very non-dry layman friendly stlye and definetly made me see certain things differently. I can highly recommend reading or listening to this book. After reading it, I listened to an Interview of his on youtube (SRF Sternstunde) and also read up some other stuff online about this thing. Basically its widely accepted in the scientific world (certainly in the neurosciences), thats feelings are nothing but algorithms. A way of signaling calculations made by the brain on how decide in a certain situation. In the interview he gives a good example: A baboon sees a banana on a distant banana tree. But close to the tree, theres also a Lion. The baboon takes in information through his sensory organs about the situation: about the lion - for example how far is he? is he dangerous? etc. about the bananas - are they ripe? are they green? how many of them are there? etc. about himself: am i fast enough to escape the lion? these are just some examples of thousands of information bits this baboon's brain has to process to make a decision about weather its worth while going for the bananas, or not. Is the risk of dying bigger through the lion or through starvation? The brain subconsciously makes a split second decision and the result is displayed in the feeling the baboon has in that moment. If the brain decides the risk of starving is higher than the risk of getting killed by the lion, the baboon will feel courageous. If its the other way around, he will feel fear. This basicalls says, every feeling this baoon has ever had, were just a way of his brain expressing the decisions its made, which had the highest chances of survival. Following this theory, feelings are just an algorithm (by far the best one ever made, polished by millions of years of evolution) Ofc human emotions are way more complex and heavily influenced by social and cultural stuff awell. But nevertheless, if the theory is right, every human emotion is just a way of expressing what is best to do in that situation in order to survive. Even feelings you would never consider having anything to do with natural selection or survival . Like desires or the feeling u get when u see something beautiful. But even there...why do we think a snow star is beautiful? obviously because of its symmetry. But why do we think symmetry is beautiful? The theory thought to be true is because symmetric stuff is more likely good for you than assymetric stuff. Theres more likely to be something wrong with "it", if its asymmetrical, than if its not. At least in nature. These theories and thoughts probably wont change the way i live, but i nevertheless think its interesting to think about it. But its also kind of an unpleasant feeling thinking about it this way. So was this just my algorithm telling me my chances of survival are greater if I dont think about it this way? lol

I also like the concept of a multiverse en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiverse Sometimes I even think.. what if in an alternate reality this or that happened and what would be different? Very interesting
2021-03-02 22:15
Congratulations, you just learned what 'instinct' is. Don't get me wrong, I like how passionate you seem to be about this but you really needed a book for this? Something tells me that you might have left out some other important bits of information.

congratulations, you didnt seem to get my point. Up until i heard about it, i wouldve never guessed that EVERY feeling i can have (even something as trivial as having a desire to get a blowjob from your mum, would have its roots in a simple statistic calculation of the brain, if this is benefitial for me to survive.) but nice that the baboon bit stuck with you.

Yes it is the pain pleasure paradox. The mind will do anything to avoid pain and gain pleasure, because pain=lowering survival and pleasure= increasing survival. Heres a good video on it: youtube.com/watch?v=oK4m3AmpV2w&t=1s
2021-03-02 22:35
Defensive much, are we? Chill dude. This is why I said that I have the feeling you left some bits of information out. The example you posted is directly related to instinct and THIS is the bit of information that got me confused as to why you needed a book for it. For example, your instinct told you that my reply was offensive somehow because MAYBE you haven't realised that what you described and instincts are the same until I pointed out. This means that you're analyzing if you're wrong and if you are = lower survival rate = bad emotions.. Check #18 for the same reply with a different text. Plus, if you're really serious about that Bj thing we can work something out.. just saying

But this would basically mean we are still just instinct driven animals, and yes i knew that we always were to a large extent. But i didnt think that complex emotions still have their roots in survival instinct and basically still boil down to this basic question of mere survival. Also sorry for being rude, but ur post was a bit condescending, so I automatically responded passive agressively. Blame my instincts :P

Well, that's because we are basicaly instinct driven animals haha.. We tend to perceive instinct as something exclusive to wild animals or something that kicks in when we're in full survival mode but in reality the differences are related to the amount of information we're capable of bringing into the decision making process. BUT, this is not a consensus. There are studies that suggests that emotions are just your brain chemically telling you that you're not 100% onboard with said instinct and THIS is where things gets tricky as they are allegedly generated from you analyzing your own past experiences I'm realy oversimplifying this but if you have the time and interest I suggest you read this: affective-science.org/pubs/2012/emotions.. As for the little feud, don't worry.. I'm a sassy boy, I can take sassy back.. take care dude :D

Everything we do is based on survival. That's why when we touch something hot (like an oven burner) we have that split second reaction of pulling the hand away from it, even though we did not go through the conscious steps on how to do it. Also that's why we have memory, to remind us of the dangers of the past so we can avoid it in the future (so the next time you won't put your hand in the burner again). The same can be said for why we feel pain (dangerous - avoid it) or pleasure (good - seek it). I have this book in my to-read list.

its not really that deep though. honestly feelings being algorithms should be a pretty intuitive connection since neurology is ultimately complicated chemistry/electrochemistry. even then i dont see how it really makes a difference on how you yourself process thoughts or emotions ive read the book a few years back and it was definitely a fun read but for different reasons than you i guess
2021-03-02 22:22
We are just the organic version of a super computer. But meaning is what you give it they are technically algorithms but you can make a effort to make yourself feel different things (Disregarding medical problems). we don't serve a higher power.

"every human emotion is just a way of expressing what is best to do in that situation in order to survive" There are lots of emotions that are literally the opposite. Like if you feel confident about something that is just dumb, for example, teenagers who act dumb because they feel immortal or whatever
2021-03-02 23:35

In these cases their brain failed to understand the real outcome of their decisions. A healthy brain will ALWAYS modulate emotions in a way to guarantee it's survival, but if the person isn't smart enough to understand how dangerous that behavior is, then the brain won't make the person feel scared or discouraged on doing it.

2021-03-03 00:50
yeah but how does neural algorithms play into emotional pathologies like depression, or apathy? The loss of desire to live is pretty counter-intuitive for a species survival no? I do believe that our psychosomatic reactions to external stimuli is very much related to chemical balances in the brain, but I also think that it's expressed through language, despite it's inherent limitations. Check out linguistic theory on the nature of consciousness, interesting stuff

2021-03-03 09:24
Well.. it seems i found another person that gets amazed by how the brain works and how it's functioning affect our emotions, feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. It's really amazing how the brain works, and i can tell you that i learned a few things on how the brain works that would blow your mind away! My interest on the brain functioning started when i was 28 yo and got diagnosed with severe ADHD, generalized anxiety disorder, recurrent depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and dysthimia. You missed one thing... yes our brain is always modulating behavior by using it's "survival mechanism", but it's not always about surviving. On an subconscious level, our brain works with this premise: "Runaway from the pain and seek for pleasure".

first of all its not my thesis, its is by someone who is probably a lot more intelligent than you or me. second you should learn to read... because thats exaclty what i was adressing in my last sentences. why do u think you are in "awe of classical music"?

I don’t know. But what I do know is that the reason for it is way more complex than the bs you are trying to sell here. I also don’t know which sentence you are referring to. Maybe be more specific and actually bring forward a counterargument next time. The fact that you are suggesting that the guy who wrote this book is probably more intelligent than us and thus my argument is somehow invalidated or weakened shows that you discuss from a point of intellectual authority which is lazy af. So try again and maybe I will take the time to destroy you again.
