Nope. The world did not have a suicide rate of 20% at any time, that is just stupid.
If there ever such a thing, then things would get real bad real quickly in all sorts of ways and it would not take long till the world became a really empty place.

We would just find another way to distract ourselves, it has been like this ever since we started documenting stuff. In fact, this is how most of our base technology were made - buy curious and bored people trying to find something to do.
