If yes, why do you do it? Which sector? How long did it take to complete?

Theres a lot of university students in hltv so I don't think its that unlikely for there to be a few with a PhD.
2021-04-14 07:57
Why wouldn't there be PhD people lol. You think they are so special? Rofl

its not how special PHD people are is the statistical fact that the vast majority of HLTV's population is under 22 years old so the statistical likelihood of people with PHD's here is very very low

I am candidate. Third year, planing to finish by early 2023. My research is in geochemistry/biogeochemistry/chemostratigraphy. I think that 99% of people do science because they realy enjoy it. Science cant be done without true comitment. I do it because i love it and beacause i started it when i was really young ( around 18), so this is what i do. Hahahaha Hope it may help you, though i am not a Phd yet.

Ohhh nice. Just a question , have you ever had days where you dont feel motivated. And if you do feel unmotivated, what do you do to motivate yourself? Thanks!
2021-04-14 06:41
1 reply
It is very easy to feel unmotivate, because here in br research money is not always there, the scolarships are low ( as in anywher in the world), and you know that you not gonna make huge money for the rest of your life. But as I said, it is a challange and a comitment, so you have to push through this difficulties and keep going. By the end, to see your work published and your name there is what pays off. So when i am unmotivate i think about how cool would be to have my work published in a great journal by the end, to see my results in a great thesis. This goals keeps me moving i think.
2021-04-14 15:16
ye if I were to do it, it would be in computer science. But it takes like 4-5 years to finish. So much patience and commitment to the subject. I just finished masters last year and imagining studying for 4-5 years more seems like a nightmare. Need to work for a bit and if I am passionate about something might pursue What made you do PhD? To do your research and have resources like lab, libraries and etc? thanks for the answer!
2021-04-14 06:47
1 reply
As i said i was very familiar with science logistics, like lab work, scientific reading, wrting etc, so the logistics was always natural bc i started it really young. It helps a lot, bc if you got no scientific experience PhD will look like hell, bc most of this bascic stuff should already be easy for you. Apart from the logistics what makes me do it is the passion and comitment about it. Just set the goal and go for it.

2021-04-14 06:42

It's kinda hard to say who should or shouldn't do one, from my time doing one and seeing other people do them one of the first things you learn is that just because a person got good grades doesn't mean they're cut out for doing a PhD. A lot of people can't really handle the world of research where there's no definitive answer that someone else can give you.

I see, that's quite an interesting viewpoint.

In Australia, you don't have to do do masters to go into PhD and to my knowledge most places typically have a longer PhD time than we do.

PhD isn't really like doing regular study if you are doing research for it, for the most part it's a lot more like working a job. Typically you are also paid to do one on some form of scholarship/stipend.
2021-04-14 07:40
1 reply
+1 - far more like a job except you aren't told what to do by idiots. it's 3-4 years in UK, stipend is tax-free + get paid for teaching undergrads, so money is ok.

thought about doing phd in mycology, but I realised in majority of cases and certainly mine industry experiance > phd. More money requiring less effort at the same time. Talked to one of my proffessors recently, he finnished his post doc habilitation and he wanted to switch to programming as a junior programmer, cuz salary at universitiy is dogshit. OFC you can do other things with phd than working in academia

I did a PhD in analytic philosophy. It took just over three years (only had funding for three years so needed to get it done). Why? I think just to prove to myself that I could. It was an idea that I got in my head after finishing my bachelor's degree and I didn't have any better ideas or other talents to pursue. "Don't die wondering" as they say.
