‘Don’t go to therapy for depression. Hit the gym instead’
Algeria NoMouthAndMustScream
What if I told you Mr Based and #Redpilled that literally nearly every single psychologist or medical practitioner tells a patient in their very first session, when treating almost every mental ailment, that they should be regularly exercising? That hitting the gym is good for the mood has never been a secret I’m afraid.
2021-05-07 03:53
Topics are hidden when running Sport mode.
so if even the psychologist tells you to go to the gym why don't you spare the cost and time talking about it with a "professional" and start doing it? Especially when you already know what has to be done lol

therapy has never helped me, it has always been pretty insulting tbh. Getting shit done is always more effective as therapy provides possibilities but action provide results

but again, it’s common for therapists to also encourage people ‘to get stuff done’, it’s also a well known in psychology that this is beneficial, maybe you had a shitty therapist

when someone is depressed, they may or may not think clearly, and maybe not knowing what to do. a psychologist can lay out the steps and provide encouragement. they also know when something goes wrong, and a patient needs further treatment (drugs) and can refer to a psychiatrist.

you're really defensive about this topic. sad to hear that things didn't work out with you, but therapy and medication do have their places and purposes. even though being active and excercizing is a good thing, you shouldn't preach against those two things like it's gospel.
2021-05-07 09:34

Not defensive so much as opiniated. Therapy and medication have their places for those who can't overcome their issues alone, but those people often don't find solutions and resort to the easiest methods (having someone else find the solution for you). There is no value in having someone else do everything for you

"but those people often don't find solutions and resort to the easiest methods (having someone else find the solution for you). There is no value in having someone else do everything for you" is this a fact or just something you happen to think?

Having someone else find solutions for you whether that be through therapy or anything in life is pitiful and valueless
2021-05-07 11:03

i agree that you should seek your own solutions, thats's not what they do in therapy. therapy is aimed to enable and help people to find solutions themselves. the solution can be anything as people are individuals. either you have no experience with therapy or were disillusioned by one practicioner who was not suitable for you. either way, you shouldn't make generalizing comments based on your own experience. "but those people often don't find solutions and resort to the easiest methods" and again do you have any evidence to support this statement?

Stop drinking caffeine?
2021-05-07 05:37
4 replies
Yeah I was an addict for 10 years soon as I stopped everything became easier, caffeine increases cortisol depletes dopamine not to mention the damage it can cause if you get it from say coffee and soda to your gut. Sleep issues is also a big one, you might sleep for 8 hours but the caffeine is still in your system and you won't be getting restful sleep, if you always wake up tired no matter how long you sleep chances are you are malnutrition or you're on too many stims, most people who wake up like this pound back coffee and that cycle increases over time. You can't just stimulate your body unnaturally everyday constantly and expect your body/mind not to give in at some point.

2021-05-07 06:28
You're right, but don't need to be afraid of caffeine, just learn your dose and how to use it properly without getting negative side effects. Of course I'm talking not about consuming caffeine every day constantly because you have low energy or have lack of sleep or need stimulation or can't stay focused and so on. You can take some caffeine 1-2 days a week if you NEED it, in doses which doesn't increase cortisol, with the right timing (for example, taking caffeine straight after waking up is bad since your cortisol levels are already elevated, and personally I don't even drink green tea after 12:00 because I go to bed at 21:00-22:00).

Yup, I agree. I think where people fall in the cycle is when they have a long night or shir sleep they want to boost in the morning, 1 coffee turns into 3 pretty quickly and daily, it's an extremely hard drug to come off the withdrawals suck so people just keep at it. It's a pretty difficult substance to be strong minded about.

Hitting the gym or doing a specifically outdoors hobby should be enough with people going trough sad phases (couple broke with you, loose a job, failed some exams, etc) with depression as a pathology means also that the liquid that surrounds your brain is chemically unbalanced, making oneself be always in a "recursive endless loop" of misery from which you cannot just recover "being happy" but rather following a carefully planned treatment. TL;DR: There is a neuro-chemical aspect of depression (pathology) that cannot be reverted but just "hitting the gym" or something alike.

Dude, what works for you may not work on anybody else. Some people just need to talk and be heard, while some other really don't know how to escape their constant mental pain. People are different. If you're really deep in it - you will feel bad no matter what you do. So the answer to how to feel better is... VODKA! Become an alcoholic and you will forget about everything.
2021-05-07 09:10
if youre depressed, do NOT go to the gym. gyms are full of 80iq idiots who think theyre chads trying to make every other guy feel bad about their body and trying to hit on girls. its really annoying and doesnt help you feel better about yourself. just buy a pull up bar on amazon, bolt it into your wall, and use it every day. do some pushups and some situps. make sure you use proper technique and keep your back straight. also make sure you get all your vitamins, fiber, protein, etc. i can recommend bulkpowders.com, they have good discounts, you can get a couple kg of protein for a good price. also make sure you get enough sunlight, at least 2 hours a day. you should start seeing significant results in physique and mental health in about a month.

okay, lets say there is a perfect gym without any chads and no attractive women to distract me. it would still cost more time and money to go to gym instead of doing exercise at home. i dont see the advantage. if you are depressed and want to go out alone, there are plenty of other things you can do. go for a bike ride. go to a bar and hit on women.

"gyms are full of 80iq idiots who think theyre chads trying to make every other guy feel bad about their body and trying to hit on girls. its really annoying and doesnt help you feel better about yourself." i know these things go hand in hand with depression, but only people who are insecure feel like this. nobody cares about you at the gym. nobody is judging you at the gym. like the other guy said, do your thing and go home. if you stick with it you will see results and it will make you feel better just take it easy at the beginning. learn proper technique and don't over do the weights. the only people i laugh at in my head are ego lifters who use too big weights and lift with atrocious form
2021-05-07 09:23

but thats my point. people who are depressed and insecure do feel like that. so going to the gym to mentally compare yourself to guys who are twice as big and better looking than you, probably wont help get out of depression. i much rather exercise at home especially when i feel bad. and yeah good technique is way more important than heavy weights.

yes they do feel like that, but projecting the feeling onto others is not healthy. avoiding and hiding from places and people is not going to solve your insecurities. only exposing yourself to the real world and realizing that your expectations and prejudices are baseless is the right way.
