My best guess is that he simply doesn't like it for breakfast.
Here in Argentina, and probably in Brazil as well, people don't it that kind of stuff for breakfast. That's something we would/could eat for lunch though it's not common either.
For breakfast, along with coffee/tea, the usual stuff here is some of the following:
Toasts with jam/butter
Medialunas (something similar to a Croissant)
I guess some people like eating cereal/oatmeal or something like that but I wouldn't say it's super common.
Essentially, our breakfasts are on the sweet spectrum, not salty. The closest we get to a "salty" breakfast is a bagel.
