The fact that so many books still name the Beatles as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics are still blinded by commercial success. The Beatles sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rock critics are often totally ignorant of the rock music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that the Beatles did anything worthy of being saved.

What makes great music is the feeling it can generate on you. 4 chord songs can be anthems and should not be neglected inspite of the art of more complex genres

++++++++++1000000000000000000000000000000 People still argue what is good music and what isn't while forgetting to actually enjoy something they like listening to. IMO artists such as Beatles, Michael Jackson and Queen, will not be surpassed on that INFLUENTIAL scale, but will obviously by sales. IMO music doesn't prove itself good no matter how many people buy or listen to it, AKA Lil pump or any other mumble rappers. "Henehehenehehenehe he, hu gutugu gutugu gutugu gu"- Snoop Dogg on mumblers. Of course, previous opinions about Lil pump contradicts the idea of enjoying music itself, but it doesn't contradict the fact that it's pointless and effortless music. "What makes great music is the feeling it can generate on you" is a great statement in that sense, where you can see how much music can influence people emotionally.
2021-06-20 08:40
they were the most significant and most influencial for sure, tho their music may not be that good...they had 5 hits out of 200 something songs i think
2021-06-19 06:59

They had 5 hits on every album. At one point they sat on the Top 5 places on the US hit list, so there´s 5 hits for you right there. They may only have made 5 songs that you like, and you´re entitled to that opinion. Just drop the BS

True The songs are over 50 years old But that kids today only know 5 songs is not the same as "they only had 5 hits"

The Beatles had 20 number 1 hits. 20....in a time when music was legit and being number 1 actually meant something....they have an actual album called number 1 which is just their number 1 hits ....that's not including all the other songs that they had inside the top 10 or even top 40.

I quote again: The fact that so many books still name the Beatles as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. So ... he says that Rock Music is not a serious art (while going after the band, that actually turned rock music into a serious artform) and that critics are wrong to call Beatles significant and influential. He is diminishing the greatest band of all time, saying that critics and (record buying) fans are wrong. But feel free to keep trolling

The point of the post was that rock fans are stupid and have no real idea bout rock music in general except for what sells. No appreciation for actually good rock music. And no idea what is good rock music. It was not even written by the guy who posted it. Its something Scaruffi wrote. Like 20 years ago bruh.

Well, going blunt on this there's a reason why they sold so damn many, did you think? Their main strength was songwriting, on top of their top notch performance they were meant to be famous. But the thing that made them stand out were those little innovative decisions in their writing, as to add another note to a common chord and change the sound completely, or some rhythmic decisions that would serve as hooks. Their most obvious weakness has served them as the biggest advantage, they didn't know theory and had to literally invent chords to enrich their music and while at it, they'd let themselves go and you know how far they went.

Well of course, but The Beatles are a bad example because they are pretty good. There are many big bands like Queen, Aerosmith, Van Halen etc. who are actually complete garbage. Not to mention 2000's popular music which all is rock bottom and the worst music ever produced in the history of mankind, period.

I dont think that you can compare these music genres, it doesnt make any sense because art doesnt work like that.
2021-06-19 21:37
But the main question is "Does music have to be an art?". I say no to that, music should be more of a hobby than an art. Listening to it or singing and playing it should be done out of joy, whatever the genre is. I like lots of genres and hate lots of genres but anyone can listen to whatever they want if it's not morally disruptive(might be from lyrics or treatment of/from artists).

Duke Ellington was extremely popular in the 30s-50s, he was basically a household name, along with the other Big Band leaders of his era like Count Basie and Benny Goodman.

I don't know why you're having a whinge about the Beatles when the state of contemporary music is fucking appalling. 12-year old kinds creating shit on synthesizers, dogshit like Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa, Beyonce, that fucking Irish kid with the big tis who does mumble rap. either decent bait or 0 IQ take if you compare how drastically different the 50s (and previous decades) were from the 70s (and onwards) specifically because of the beatles sound. Thats not to mention all the objectively verifiable things that they literally pioneered, either in actually being the fully first to do it or the first to popularize it aka on a massive scale. For example? Stadium concerts, concept albums and many more things.

i think beatles is the most influential band because they're the first of using recording technology cmiiw. i mean look at his album Sgt Pepper, it's very experimental and weird. i mean, bass panning right, drum left, etc. also, back then abbey road studio is very advanced and the most popular studio because the beatles, and after that many popular band also recorded in abbey road studio like pink floyd. i also think the arrangement of beatles are very catchy and influential too, i mean many people studied the beatles arrangement and etc. i mean, i dont really like the beatles, but i think it's more like the most influential band rather than the best band in the world, but it's just my opinion. about jazz recording like john coltrane and other jazz composer, i think it's just more like different music and you can't compare it with pop/rock music. i mean, jazz music is just not for every one and they're using complex chord and arrangement and sometimes it will make your brain hurt. example like john coltrane - giant steps, they're modulating like crazy and using all notes, i mean, i really like it because it's sounds good and unique, but i think not everyone like it, some people prefer catchy and simple chord. also jazz recording are using same technology like sgt pepper which is make jazz music sounds unique. sorry for bad english
