Just got my scores in. Ez 1500. Time to go to Harvard and spend 300K in 4 yrs to get a design degree to get payed 40k/year and get clinical depression by 30 B) Y’all jealous?

Topics are hidden when running Sport mode.
I legitimately did get a 1500 though which is pretty cool.

Cool! Congrats! Where do you actually plan to go to? I'd recommend NYU if you'd want to go to Wall Street, it's the number one university for you to be able to enter Goldman Sachs. :D

I’m looking at computer engineering so currently my top choice is Rochester institute of technology. It’s a lesser known school but they require you have experience in the workforce before graduating and implement that into the curriculum which I value a lot. That’s my top choice right now.

I'd recommend you try to get a school that has a lot of OCR (On Campus Recruitment). The reason I recommend NYU is because that's the number one place for OCR in Wall Street. But all the best, if you do want to study Computer Engineering, be my guest. All the best to you though!

Yeah job placement and average pay out of college have been two huge factors I’ve considered. RIT boasts a 98% job rate out of college and for computer engineering an average pay of 80k starting if I remember correctly. NYU I looked at, but the price deterred me (it was around 60k/year if I remember correctly).

Ye, it's very expensive. What do you want to work as though? Because in the field of engineering, you actually can learn it all by yourself by reading tons of books and attending a Dev Bootcamp. I think that could be a more efficient way of using your money instead of attending college and be burden with student loans.

I’m split between doing computer engineering or doing management in a company that deals with engineering. I may consider a major in CEE and a minor in economics or something. I still got work to do in determining how my life will go.

Be wary of private schools. If your parents own a business (my problem), have a lot of assets like a paid off house, or make over 200k you will NOT get any aid. I would recommend applying to your flagship state school for full tuition as a safety as well as some other less prestigious institutions. I wish I applied to UT Dallas, they give out many merit full rides. Try a semi-target like UMiami who give out tuition scholarships too. Do comp sci with a minor in finance/econ. Fintech is a free bag. Source: turned down ivy league

It places me in the 99th percentile of students and 98th of test takers. Most ivy leagues have a 1500 sat average in students. It’s out of 1600 so it’s quite good. Of course it could be better so now I have to consider taking it again.

I haven’t yet taken the ACT so I may take that and see if I can get a 34-35 on it, but I don’t think I’ll do another sat unless I’m given a chance for free because I studied a lot for this one and I don’t really wanna do that again

Yeah getting a good ACT score as well can be nice just to like demonstrate like "hey this wasnt just one test" and getting at least a 34 is a strong goal bc past a 34 your specific score starts to matter less just because the margin for error becomes so small

2021-07-14 15:19
I got a 770 math and a 730 English. Frankly the English doesn’t really matter to me, but I think I should be able to get the 800 math, so I may take it again (this was my first attempt at it). Then again though, 1500 vs 1530 probably won’t change much tbh… idk I just have to think on it and probably discuss with a college counselor because my grades don’t really match the score so I’ll be relying on it for college apps.

I have a fair few high level extra curriculars so I think I’ll be good in that regard. I know it’s much more difficult for international students to get scholarships because y’all are the primary source of money for universities (they actually give a fair bit now to domestic students, normally tens of thousands). It sucks for y’all but it also makes sense considering other countries have their schools, just not ones that rank and highly as the US.

The questions aren’t hard it’s just that there’s so many it’s easy to screw up, and it’s timed. It goes to around algebra 2 for math and includes reading and writing for English. No science or anything and subject tests were removed this past year.

I didn’t think it was very hard but the time limit screws up a lot of people. I know a few people who just had to guess for the last passages in reading because they got too low on time. Doing that is an absolute score killer though.

Congratulations. Can you tell me more about SAT? Like is it entrance exam?
2021-07-14 15:25

It’s a test taken in the US and by most students looking to attend a US school. It’s standardized for a monthly exam with 4 sections (technically 5 but the last isn’t graded). The sections include reading, writing, math no calculator, math with calculator, and test questions. You are given two scores out of 800, math and reading/writing. Those scores are combined to give you a score out of 800. The test normally takes 3 hours, however, in my case the proctor was a snail and it took 5. Scores are sent about a month after taking the exam. Scores are then sent to colleges along with your application for consideration in admittance.

The thing is this was 5-6 years ago and what happened was I was primarily applying to UK, US and Canadian unis however SG was at the back of my head and just wanted to give it a shot. Infact, initially I had no intent of studying in SG but just as backup choice. You're right. I should've applied to NUS, my friends keep saying that as well :(

Yes or we do basic calculus. It really depends on the student, some take AP Calculus, but usually it's not a requirement for high school students. So a lot of students are introduced to calculus-related topics once they start their college studies.

Most people do a year of calculus and definitely do some precalc. They just don’t test on it because the test is timed and those kinds of questions take a while to solve.

Reading a bit about those they kinda seem like required AP classes. Is that the case or is there something else with them that makes them particularly difficult?
2021-07-16 14:27

We have to choose 3-4 A-levels to take before starting 2 years of College or Sixth form (NA equivalent of High School). You have no mandatory courses to take, you just take the subjects depending on university requirements with whatever you like. I've watched a video on AP vs A-levels , and apparently the content is slightly more board for a-levels, and we have a limited amount of multiple choice questions. In my Maths and Further Maths exams there were 0 multiple choice questions, in physics and computing there were a section of them, but overall they did not account for much. We also have no extra credit stuff, it's just one set of exams at the end of 2 years to determine your final grade. docs.advantagelearn.com/past-exam-papers.. mathsgenie.co.uk/alevel/ap1june2018.pdf if i compare the papers maybe the a-level looks a bit harder, but most people say that a-levels are harder than SATs & APs

2021-07-15 23:06
Go somewhere fun and challenging. I scored similarly on the ACT, and I went to a mediocre state school for no good reason. One of the very few genuine regrets of my life.
2021-07-15 23:19
I took the ACT and got a 34, which is roughly the same as getting a 1500 SAT. It got me into a state school with a great scholarship, and I'll be graduating with a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics and no debt. My point is, it's worth considering your options, but going to a great school definitely has its benefits as well even if it means you'll have debt. Also, it's alright to look at job placement and average salary, but keep in mind that you still need to seek out jobs and connections. You won't be handed a great job just for going to a good school. You seem to be on a good path, though!
