Your keyboard

I'm thinking of buying a new keyboard. I really want to try a not mass market mechanical one, like Varmilo Vintage with blue switches. What keyboard do you use? If you have a mechanical one, what switches do you have?

i thought about building a custom keyboard. how much did it cost?

Hopefully this makes sense: Depends on what you want. If your going high end, say Polly carbon plate, layered acrylic case and Holly pandas with legit gmk keycaps that is looking at 400+ depending on the availability and formfactor. Midrange is cheaper, say some c3 tangerines or gateron black inks, with an aluminium case and steel/brass plate, with either drop or knock off gmk keycaps your looking at around 200+. Budgetish is something like a kbd67 kit with akko CS switches and some aftermarket keycaps from various sites. this would be the sweet spot for entering the hobby and is like 150+ depending on the keycaps chosen. Finally budget friendly which includes upgrading pre build keyboards and this is what I did when starting the hobby, basically find either the cheapest mechanical keyboard and desolder the switches and lube them or even upgrade, or buy an optical keyboard off AliExpress and you won't have to desolder but still do lube. unfortunately you loose the ability of swapping switches out to something that isn't gateron optical. Budget friendly, would be around 60-90+ depending on formfactor and equipment and keycaps. Ps. All the prices are GDP cause I live here for a bit and the components are just examples of what to expect in terms of price in different ranges and could be changed depending on your preference. And finally I recommend some research, and actually having interest as the worst thing is spending hundreds and working hours on a keeb and hating the result.
2021-07-24 03:58
It cost me 300 ish and I totally misread the question, I still hope it helps you if you want to build one tho (my keycaps weren't legit if you wandering how I got $200 keycaps and the whole board was 300)

ok thanks for letting me in on all this. maybe when I have some more money I might try out a custom keyboard but currently I dont feel comfortable spending more than 30 USD or so on a keyboard.

I have a Logitech G710 from 2014 with cherry mx blue switches Once I spilled cola on it, did an RMA and got a new one for free This one has held up since then, and I will use it until it breaks and that could be a while still If you want durability then cherry switches are still top tier

I fell into each rabbit hole and i have to say - either i am a deaf (pretty sure i am not) or i have to lower my standards and expectations when i pay tripple the price. Is it better? Yes , marginally. Is it worth it 3 , 4 and even 5 times the price sometimes? Nope. Absolutely not. Is it going to improve your ingame performance? Of course not. Will you get bored of it in 1-2 months? Yes , it is our nature , especially when it comes to materialistic stuff. Same with cars , is Mercedes for ex. really worth double the price (used / second hand) over brand new Opel/Vauxhall Insignia? It's all brand. More popular =/= better. As for keyboards , with the same success you can just clip and lube your current Logitech / Razer generic keyboard stabs and make it feel better for couple of bucks instead of 300-500 bucks for full custom board , where again , you have to do it all - clip , lube , lube switches , fit , bla-bla-bla for more than double the price. Just like every human being , i love "wasting" money , but i am not that delusional nor a gatekeeper/liar to say "oh my god , it's so worth it , tremendous difference". So , if you want slightly better quality you wont notice / pay attention to after a week or once you put on your headphones or/and go ingame or chat and care too much about aesthetics , go for it. If you're normal human being and have better things/hobbies to spend on , well , then , no.

xtrfy k4. It uses kyle reds and they feel soo fucking smooth. Almost like they are lubed. Its just a simple clean keyboard without any extra keys or software. Just plug and play. It still has the basic features like windows lock etc. but instead of software you just control everything on the keyboard. Also the RGB is bright and clean af if you order it in white. Only dowside are the keycaps but if you use the US layout it should be easy to find better ones. Because its so simple it also doesnt cost that much. So if you just want a keyboard and you realise that you dont need all these special buttons, Softwares and features that are only there to justify a higher price, this is the keyboard to go.

IBM Model M. The switches are buckling spring ones. Nothing beats it only downside is that they are LOUD and the keyboard doesn't have Windows keys.

Yes, I like the sound. They can be a bit loud for gaming (if your mic picks it up) but I like the sound. I don't like linear switches so Reds wouldn't suit me. And I also leaned towards Blues over Browns because they require a bit more force.
