It's not good. You can put limitations on what content they can or cannot get(ratings like ESRB and PEGI) but their time for playing video games should be down to their parents. Besides, Chinese players usually have a separate server for every game so we can't tell much about their personalities.

+1 and also what kind of stupid limit is 3hrs/ week. Like bro I play video games with my IRL friends just to chill sometimes and an hour a day is literally never going to cause you to miss school homework

Kinda, actually a very close example. Going outside and socializing is actually a better thing to do overall, right? But some teenagers hear it too much that they rebel in a most narrow mindset and end up as basement-dweller losers. In that situation, do these teenagers win? Fuck no, they've lost to their ignorance and stubbornness. But does the people telling them to go out win a thing? Not really, they've lost a relative/friend to loserness and they'll be just sad.

That doesn't change what he said. It's still a government deciding what's best for millions of people. Removing any sense of individuality. My closest friend practically lives in his room. He's fitter than anyone else I know, works full time, but prefers video games to almost anything else. Suddenly this fit, successful person in his teens would be forced to live a different life. It's ridiculous, and you posting that comment is just as short sited as the rule they're implenting. Also I do love the hypocrisy that's been pointed out. If it's such a nice thing to do, lead by example.

I DONT LIKE THIS RULE, IT SUCKS. But it aims at you preparing yourself for real life instead of "wasting it" doing fucking nothing (aka playing games. No, you're not going pro before you ask...) The goal of the rule is NOT that you go outside meet new people and chill with friends more, it's more along the lines of forcing you to become something (applying yourself, studying+working) and hopefully improve the country. It's very similar to both males and females having to go to mandatory 2 years in the army in Israel, say whatever you may about Jews but Israel as a state is INCREDIBLY effective. Mean, fucked up and racist too, but effective. Do you catch my drift?
2021-09-30 04:33
it's good for a country that needs children like China, it reduces the number of basement dwellers and virgins, they go outside more and learn to socialize.

What is stopping a kid from using their parent's ID to circumvent this ban? It seems to me that this sort of ban is similar to having an age restriction on a game which can be circumvented by having an older family member buy it on their behalf. Or better yet, just buy an account?
2021-08-30 17:31

That would be illegal and the parents would have to agree to this. Obviously many will find a way around this restriction but it's still very effective.

I think you're underestimating how kids can easily get past draconian restrictions if they want something bad enough. For a country like China, I would imagine buying accounts is an easy bypass for online games, especially in ones they have a huge presence in (e.g. LoL).

Do you know anything about how China works? If you are actually from Australia of course you will have a hard time wondering how this will work because you are free to browse as you please. You can literally look up almost anything you please on your preferred search engine. The Chinese cannot.

Oh wow, imagine projecting your ignorance onto me. That's like me saying you're an American who has been so contained within his societal bubble that he doesn't know how things work outside of his country. First of all, it is incredibly difficult to regulate everything when it comes to having a country full of 1+ billion people. You are absolutely bound to have illegal industries pop up that the Chinese government cannot fully control. And guess what? They do. It's been well-documented. Yes, I'm aware of the Great Firewall, which is precisely why the Chinese use VPNs to browse restricted sites such as YouTube or play on the servers of other regions. And this is the one point I've stressing the entire time; when the Chinese government puts in a bunch of archaic restrictions on the internet/online games, then the Chinese citizens are bound to find ways around it... which is precisely what is happening. It's certainly restricted to dystopic-levels but it's nowhere near as bad when you can find ways around it. So yeah, they can search up things you and I can if they have the know-how. And if you really think account buying doesn't happen, you can literally look it up on the Chinese website Taobao and see people doing it. So really, I'm not sure what you're trying to argue.
2021-09-27 06:34
In korea it is illegal to use your person authentication for not your account and yes there are some account buying but overall the system is effective

Watch mr Xi spread propaganda that they've jailed account sellers or parents who gave their ID to their kids, parents will then think twice when they see their kid spending as much time as they do playing videogames, you have no idea how patriotic most chinese boomers are
2021-08-30 21:28
Except that in normal countries police wont come to your house if you bought your kid an 18+ game. However, if China is as bad as it is painted by the media then many parents wouldnt put themselves at risk just so their kids can play videogames.
2021-08-30 17:44
1 reply
I doubt it given how many kids already play online on their parent's or bought accounts, even with a weekly restriction as I've just found out. Sure, it's one step closer to locking things down but I would imagine the same methods of bypassing it will be used as before.
2021-08-30 17:55
accounts are linked to their social ID afaik, so you can't multi-account (could be wrong) yes they could just play under their parent's name, Korea has it so minors can't play videogames past midnight and a lot of them just use their parent's socials to look like they are 18+

2021-08-30 17:32
Thats the point? You play PC games or do something else that you like and it wastes your time. Some people go to the gym, some do sports, some read books, some paints, some watches television etc etc. Obviously gym and sports benefits you because you become healthy and stay fit. But still, its a waste of time just like PC games. You do what you enjoy. If some Chinese teens/kids like to play PC games then let them do it. Controlling the teens/kids like this not letting them play on their PC or console is f*cking insane. Sure i agree, people should not spend 9+ hours a day at the PC or console, but, its their choice AND the childs parents should obviously make the decision to not allow their child to play PC or console if they play like 7-12+ hours a day, not the government lol.

that should be something up for parents to enforce not the government, censorship in almost any way is awful. The fact you agree with the government choosing how long anyone can play games for is insane, is it also good they cant access media from around the world? just because your parents failed to enforce rules that might have fucked you up as a person doesn't mean that it becomes the government responsibility to enforce this.

Why should they access media that constantly tells lies about their government and is strongly biased towards the west? It actually would be better for them if they couldn't access foreign media because they can, I don't know where you got the idea from that they aren't able to do so. It doesn't indeed mean that but who are you up to decide when government should be worried about such growing addiction?

So do you think their media doesn't tell lies about their government (to clarify good lies) and other governments (to clarify, bad lies)? Who are they to impose against their people the right to see other media that is a violation of freedom. Also, the government could be worried about this addiction, so they should raise awareness for it and teach the risks, and leave it to the parents to do this thing that's forgotten, called parenting. If the parents fail thats on them, the government shhould have no right in intervering with that. From what youve said im also 90% sure youre baiting but im responding anyways Edit: cfr.org/backgrounder/media-censorship-ch.. (link to censorship of media in china)

Just because I agree with the Chinese government doesn't mean I'm baiting. Their people are allowed to see all media and I never stated they haven't lied, also ironic that you bring up this freedom, when you can't even buy certain chemicals in the U.S. without their government knowing because of their "tripwire" program. Raising awareness doesn't solve worrying issues immediately as this way does, it might be rough but it's the best solution they might now educate upcoming parents about this issue, so they will be aware of it

If you didnt see my link to media censorship, itll be at the end of this post, they could see limited media with censorship at the governments will. To your point about the US chemical censorship or whatever it is, i am brazilian? and i dont agree with ALMOST any censorship, for example i think hate speach is bad and should be censored (such as the n word), about the chemical censorship thing tho, i have no information about it so cant make a proper comment on it, however, i probably disagree with that censorship too. I dont actually know this, but is gambling, drinking, all drugs, or anything that could involve addiction banned or severally limited in china? Parents are responsible for their kids, the state should not be doing this type of parenting or censoring Edit: here it is: cfr.org/backgrounder/media-censorship-ch..

Not gonna lie, I could really have used that. Sometimes, when I was younger, I feel like I wasted much of my time playing on videogames than to try and reach my friends, and that's why I've lost some connections in comparison with me in 14yo

No, my parents aren't bad. To be honest, I used to go to school on the mornings and didn't do anything in the afternoon, but mostly YT or some game on my phone instead of going to WhatsApp to talk to somebody or just watch a movie. In the evenings, when my father arrived home with the notebook, that was where I spent 4 or 5 hours (8 or 9 pm to 11 or 12) playing. That's why I think China's law would be effective to me because I would have to be more talkative and shit like that. Sure I got a girlfriend and best friends on that time but had I spent more time with them, I wouldn't have lost any of them, like I did

I now know the importance of socialising and alas I didn't 4 years ago, yet I think this law is to avoid the addiction young asian men are having with games. Fortunately, I ain't addicted but should have understood that before because it's become harder to form new bonds, after all, most people don't feel like due to they already have others and it's really not important to them to meet new people. So yeah, I messed up there but at least learned it now

Media companies have nothing to do with this ban. Sure, most large corporations are scumbags but this wasn't fair for the smaller ones since Chinese likes to play indie games mostly. Also a-lot of the mare outside of China and there's already stats showing their numbers have dropped. This is taking food out of MANY peoples mouths and not doing anything good, plus this will result in a HUGE wave of depression among minors.
2021-08-30 18:10
2 replies
Most of those media companies rely on predatory user experience to incentivize profit while not putting in much work. I'm not saying all companies do this, but MMO structures (and gacha set-ups) are designed to be addictive. I have very little respect for that side of the industry, and that extends to plenty of AAA developers as well. If it curbs parasitic companies, frankly it doesn't hurt my feelings. That said, sure it may hurt people in the long run, and I'm not unsympathetic to that. I certainly don't believe this is good for Chinese children: they live in an authoritarian country that dictates practically everything about their identity (and I know this better than most outsiders). But make no mistake here, those kids were already depressed, and to some degree that reliance on gaming as an escape is pretty solid evidence of that.
2021-08-30 18:25
Classic capitalist brain rot. Deterring addiction = not doing anything good, and can only view any issue from a macro 101-level neoliberal perspective. Also the virtue signaling about depression is pretty hilarious given that you just completely ignore main point of addiction.

We all know that's never been a possibility. This fake fascist fear-mongering can't stop though because in order to be put back in charge again the disgraceful left needs to convince the population that they are the lesser evil. Just because a dozen white boomers in green and yellow brandish signs and banners outside desperately calling for the use of force against the Supreme Court (and literally nothing else because they're dummies who don't know any better), doesn't mean a dictatorship is blooming. Congressmen rule this country, not our presidents. Well, except for Lula... who literally paid bribes to congressmen to rule in their place.

well, they say it is because they want to ensure youth live healthier life, but in reality it is about controlling and monitoring peoples life, especially young people because all kind of "civil unrest" often stirs up there. Why this is not about what they say it is? At the same time China allows small children to work in factories and the salary is a hot meal and maybe a dollar per day. Why not do something about that if China is worried about well-being of children?
