6 hour work day

Hello mens, What are the pros and cons of a 6 hour work day (= full time, that is)? Are you for or against it?
2021-12-05 13:12
Topics are hidden when running Sport mode.
Why would anyone be against it?

Because its shit that will cost companies tons of money. I would cheer for unlimited work day and let people and companies to negotiate the length of their work day.

There are fields where you cant just work "smarter". You either do it badly by sacrificing less time to do the work, or you give it more time and it will be good enough. Game development is a great example. You just need certain time to finish the project + troubleshoot and when developing AAA games you end up working extra hours for a few weeks or months a year just because you have to get it over the line. And there is no way to do it "smarter" or plan it better, because you cant predict how many bugs and similar problems pop up when you enter the final phases of development. And there are much more fields other than game development or development in general, where you need more working hours.

No, its a way to use your negotiation skills to its fullest. If you dont want to be a slave for a company, you just find something else or try to sharpen your negotiating skills. I think people are just afraid of responsibility and rely on goverment to take responsibility for them. Restricting working hours is shit, pension is shit, majority of things restricted by goverment or managed by goverment is shit and its not working properly...

Except history tells us thaf in unregulated market companies will do anything to increase their profit, your "great negotiation skills" are not worth shit if you are not 1 in 1 000 000 profesion like football player. You all are just too reliant on goverement, and it will turn against you sooner or later. Its not about being 1 in 1 000 000 but to be united, which people usually cant do. I heard from so much employees how they are unsatysfied in their works and similar shits. And when I told them to create unions and just fight for the raises etc. they shit all over their pants. The problem is not in companies, but in people. Why are they afraid to do something? Because they lose their jobs? Nah, my 16 yo bro. They just think they will be fired. But when everyone in company just unite, even if some rats wouldnt do it, company would have to step back and try to negotiate the best terms for everyone. So dont blame it on a nonexistent problems. Blame you and your peers that cant stand up for themselves. Company needs people they already have even if they try to convince you that they can replace easily replace you. They usually cant...

Reliance on law and regulations is what made Europe one of best places to live, ask your grandma how it was during communism when they tried to unite and ask for better pay. People have mortgages to pay, cars and children, not everyone is young and can risk losing their job over night to argue with employers.

Its not even funny when person like you is writing it. You are probably getting fucked, otherwise you wouldnt have to rely on leftists to negotiate better working hours for you. And even if they make this shit happen, dont expect it to work perfectly. U will get fucked by your bosses even more, cus you will have to work extra hours sometimes with no extra money, because extra hours are voluntary so you dont deserve to get reward for it. So enjoy your "6" hour work day, hero!

I thought you will write something like that. There is no way to have a good job where you feel valued and bosses treat you like a normal human being and still have enough empathy for the most vulnerable to be in favor of common sense labor laws? Watch less ben shapiro and crowder, find a job and put your ass in some customer service sector and lets see what song you will be singing after 6 months if you even make through those 6 months. People who have these are getting fucked even when these laws exist, so imagine what would happen if things like maximums for weekly working hours/overtimes and minimum wage wouldn't exist.

1) "these are getting fucked even when these laws exist" - so your solution is to make another law that will change nothing. Bro, you are so funny :D 2) I have a job and owner of this company + boss are the best people I ever met. They pay good money, are friendly and patient. So stop crying here and be more careful when you are looking for a job. Or try to unite with other employees and do something together so they have to give you better conditions. But I know that crying on the internet is easier than actually doing something...

You are just a sloppy shapiro's poster boy acting like you know anything and thinking that meritocracy exists and you are top tier person that will easily become a wealthy person and you want to maximize your future wealth with having less taxes and less government regulations. Well guess what, meritocracy doesnt exist generally speaking and theres a very very high chance you are actualy not a top tier person. I would like to see you after like 10 years when reallity settles in.

Believe it or not, but you dont need goverment laws to pay less taxes. Just need to be smart or hire the person who knows how to do it. The biggest companies usually pay lower taxes than everyone else, because they know how to do it. But ordinary people dont know it and dont even want to know. They rely on goverments that they will ensure the bright future for them, and I dont blame them. Majority of people are just lazy and dont want to think. They just want to finish their shifts, hope that they will survive till pension and then enjoy some free time. If you want to live a live like this, than I dont blame you either for wanting goverments to create shit laws. And btw. I am not shapiro poster boy, leftie. Didnt watch a video of his for like 3 years nor the Crowder. I only like his change my mind series, because its funny to watch desperate lefties getting smashed by someone with firm opinions. But reading comments from people like you is amusing enough. You made my day with "new age thinker". Thanks :D

When people have more freetime, they're going to have more energy to be productive in their workplace. They might achieve close to the things they would in 8 hours in that 6 hour time span because of it. All of the focus goes to the 6 instead of dragging it to 8. Working smart > working lazy over 8 hours.

The problem is productivity in many jobs is directly linked to the number of hours worked. Taxi drivers, store clerks, waitresses, etc. won't be more productive if you shorten the number of hours worked per week.

Well, yes and no. Those working fewer hours are likely to deliver better quality or make fewer mistakes if you like, the golden balance is likely different based on both the work and the person doing it. Anyhow, there is fewer and fewer jobs that is ones where it is mostly people doing the same thing over and over again. More and more of those jobs are replaced by people monitoring and fixing machines - like fx. shops where people scan their shopping them self and pay electronically leaving employees to just monitor and guide.

All depends - as I mentioned where the balance for best productivity is depends. For sure there are jobs where people can work and produce till they fall over, however even in most of those jobs abusing people means more mistakes are made and also people are will get sick or leave - all things that means over working employees is short sighted and bad economy in most cases. However if labor is cheap enough it pays to work them where it really is abuse, a company like Amazon is proof of that. What it means for society that some companies in some countries are allowed to abuse their work force is another thing, my guess it makes for lots of people suffering from stress and other problems and for sure it is not what makes people happy.

2021-12-05 19:47
It is about working smarter and not harder. I don't remember the exact date, but some time in October people in the US supposedly have worked as many hours as we don on a whole year. However productivity here and in the US is the same, personally I think part of why is due to our much flatter hierarchies where everybody is trusted to think, make decisions and management is open and welcomes input from everybody. PS. I work 37h weeks, with½ hour payed lunch time include and have 6 weeks paid vacation. That is more less the standard here.

Robots will soon be doing all that, they are coming. Now of course that is a simplification as many jobs are not easily going to be done by robots, but already a lot of what has been automated or computerized was done by people just a generation ago.

Shouldnt be if you are paid by the hour and if you only work 30h weeks you would get paid less anyway since companies wouldnt be profiting as much as they would be if people worked 40h weeks. For the normie brains reading: work more=get paid more, honestly only about how much time you are willing to put into work

This is not how it has always been, in 1920 60 hours per week was standard, working hours have steadily declined over the decades and guess what, productivity increased without pay decrease. Relationship between worked hours and productivity is not linear, above a threshold output rises at a decreasing rate as hours increase= you have MORE productive hours in 6 hours than 8. source: ftp.iza.org/dp8129.pdf

I dont have set hours but if I was to work lets say a 4 hour shift thats just short of $45. So 1 shift of 4 hours a week would make me around $200. I feel so bad for the guy. I dont know if you will believe me or not but there isn't much difference. I live in Kolkata, a metropolitan city. You will get everything here that you get in London (for ex). I have seen Ferraris, Aston Martins on roads, not as much as in London. Villas worth $1+ million. But for common people like me, everyday necessary items are much cheaper. A matchbox containing 40 sticks is worth $0.027. My internet speed is around 100Mbps, costs less than $10 a month. Public transport costs are very low. Ask me if you want to know anything else about my city. P.S. - Kolkata is not the richest city in India.

I haven't lived in the UK so I won't be able to compare it, but my elder sister lives in the US. She says that the healthcare facilities in Kolkata are much better than in the US. In Kolkata, you have private hospitals and govt hospitals. Govt. hospitals are totally free and treatment is really good, as a result, more patients, less staff. There are a lot of private hospitals as well that provide good treatments. Regarding clinics, we have at least 1 doctor with his/her private clinic in every locality. Approx they charge $5 per visit. They even visit the patient's house if required. Say, I got cough and cold (before Covid era), I used to go to a local pharmacy, tell him the symptoms and get medicines; and they work. The cost of medicine is also less. Most medicines cost like $1 for 10 tablets. Almost same with the education sector, govt schools/colleges, and private schools/colleges. Most people go to private schools but it's very difficult to get into govt colleges here. You must have heard the news about the new CEO of Twitter, Parag Agarwal, he is from a govt college, IIT. One needs to be super smart to get into govt colleges here. Yes, corruption is there. The situation is better compared to what it used to be previously. People follow traffic rules on main roads but not in small lanes. You can ask me more about Kolkata, but please don't ask me to compare it because I haven't lived in any of the 1st world countries, so won't be able to compare Kolkata with London or so.

North India is a tourist destination. It actually depends on where you live in North India. Some places are breathtaking like the Himachal, some places are complete cities, and then there is Kashmir in the north, still going through terror attacks (the situation is better than before.) Some places in the north are more expensive than Kolkata. For ex: Transport cost is very low here. Reaching one end of the city to another will cost approx $5 in a cab. It's cheaper by bus, still cheaper in metro/subway, and cheapest if you use the local train. I am sorry I started talking about Kolkata, but you want to know about North India. I can tell you more about Kolkata bcz I live here. Regarding North/South or other parts of India, I can give you a vague idea. I am glad that you know about Kolkata "a very old and structured city." Most people don't know about it. They know Mumbai and Delhi, for obvious reasons that they are great cities, but most people never heard of Kolkata.

6-8 hours of work (6-7 perfect) should be the maximum so people have time for self improvement (learn new things, raise qualifications, learn a new language etc) hobbies and just to waste time (CS for example). Not to mention house „work” - cooking, cleaning etc Some people work for 10-12+ hours and in long term thats really devastating for mental health (at least if you not love your job)

Less work hours for more money is the perfect utopia for me. I do 8 hours workshift a day that feels like an eternity. After that Im doing shopping, preparing food, I want to do my gym training or running session 6 days/week and Im constantly in rush because I trying to do something besides work. I want to fucking enjoy life. What is life when your own life becomes a survival because some people dont have time for anything besides their work and things they have to do at home, nonsense

Automation is taking jobs and they're not being replaced by anything. The business people at the top don't understand reality and think that throwing more manpower at their company will make it more efficient instead of what it actually does, which is just make life worse for their employees.
2021-12-05 13:45
It depends on where you work. I have a working day 8 hours + 1 hour lunch. But actually out of these hours I work 2-4 hours, very rarely all 8. For me 6 hours will be ok. But we have a lot of workers in the factory and their salary depends on the number of products produced. For them, 6 hours is not the best option.

I read that in Soviet times scientists researched this question. People actually dont need to work 8 hours a day for economics work well but only 2 end even less. But when they experimented it turned out that a human cant just work so little because he has too much free time and just dont know what to do with it and it leads to depression. People need the feeling they are surviving and doing something important.

Depends on the industry. In non-international B2B sales, there was absolutely no point in having working hours outside 9-15 since nobody would answer phone or any email before or after that timeframe. In another company, 8-16 were the standard office hours with no flexibility whatsoever. That non-flexibility meant that out of those 8 hours, maybe 6,5 were in any way productive as some people weren't really productive early in the morning and some were tired in the afternoon and couldn't focus on anything anymore. In an international company, the hours were kind of flexible. 8 hours was pretty much perfect for productivity. However, there were some incredibly stupid days that would require 16-hour attendance because all of the bullshit meetings.

curious how many of those shitting on the idea actually have work xd I don't get paid per hour so it's up to me how much time I spend on working and I seldom work more than 2 hours a day. I'd like to do more but I get very inefficient. ofc depends on what your work is but if you really want to get something done and not just pretend you are working you can forget about 8 hours. also spending too much on work is essentially dumb, people should enjoy life and only work as much as they need. find a hobby, do sports, stay healthy. work enough to not worry about money.
2021-12-05 15:05
I'm for it because I think people would feel better if they had more free time. They can for example spend more time with family and friends which is the most important thing in life.

I heard Chinese workers work 10h a day. No doubt they will rule the world soon
2021-12-05 15:24

Way more than 10 hours. Factory workers in China work around 12-14 hours a day, 28 days a month. Usually factory they paid minimum salary to workers (40 hours a week or 120hours a month that is like 250 USD or 2USD/h). If people want to make a living, they must relies on the overtime pay which factories usually pays higher, that goes up to 3 to 4 USD per hour, with extra benefits like night shift bonus, weekend bonus, high attendance bonus. Basically people are fighting to get weekend and night shift jobs for a higher pay, by the end of the month one can make up to 1000USD. For those tech guys, the average working life is 1 day rest for every 2 weeks, 12 - 14 hours per day. But they make alot, a top school CS master grads can easily get package up to 60-70k USD per year. If people really want work-life balance, they choose to become civil servant or work in a state-owned enterprise, or a US company. They might receive slightly less pay, but 9 hours a day, weekends and annual leaves were being granted. My father's firm is in very remote place, so we provide accommodation, overtime pay. An average employee works all day from 8am to 10pm, people choose to not get day off since it's so remote and there almost nothing they can do during day off. But we do give them a longer annual leaves up to one month a year so they can go back to their home.

"An average employee works all day from 8am to 10pm" I would venture to guess that the country in which this firm is operating has very lax labour laws and no protection for its workers. 14 hours a day is inhuman and vastly inefficient.
2021-12-05 18:14
Only 6? Full time is like 37 hours/week, so it should be around 7,5 hours/day on average. 6 hours a day sounds nice tho, but if it pays the bills and you can live decent/above average, then im all in for it. Im a $32K/Month DJ btw

let workers negotiate and the market decide. my favorite standard is 9-10 hours each day and a 3 day weekend. -1 hour shouldn't make a difference bc the least amount of work is done in the last hour work hours: tech < labor < financial services. it makes sense

Don't be fooled, asking for 6h work days with same pay = 25%+ pay raise. "Work smarter", not possible in most jobs since a lot of jobs require presence.
