Keyframe, when it's mocap others coworkers does the job usually.
About blender, the problem is that's hard to work a whole team on the same thing without coding a lot of stuff. If you're a one man band it's a nice soft, but if you need a solid pipeline it's a pain in the ass, even for blender institute, I talked with a couple of the guys doing the shorts and they told me they do a lot of things by brute force. In the future it will be great, but it's still not there.
About Autodesk prices, the company you work is the one providing license, so no problem at all, if you need to learn, just use jack sparrow license and have fun.
