DUTCH GUYS COME
 |
Belgium lil_vodka
I have finally decided to move to The Netherlands)) I have 2 questions for you guys. I'm a pretty chill person, I hate negative vibes but I am not the wildest party animal, I have my moments. Utrecht, Tilburg, Eindhoven or Breda, which one is the best city in your eyes. And will you guys accept me as a Belgian fellow, like I don't have no hate against Dutch people at all. e.g. the only Belgian yt I watch is Acid, you really cant compare it with the Dutch ones. Cheers

The reason why I would rather live in The Netherlands is because of the girls basically how they talk, their positivity, they're way more hot for me bro Oilsjt is too small for me as well, I have lived here already for like 12 years and it's like I never see any action besides station kkkkkkkkkk or op de grote markt during the drunk/high nights

Of the bigger cities utrecht and Den Haag are nice, Den Haag does not have an university though. You shouldn't look for houses in these cities if you don't want to overpay by a lot. Go to close by smaller cities with decent amount of people... for Den Haag that would be Zoetermeer or Delft for example. Parts of Zoetermeer are only a 10 min drive to Den Haag, same goes for Delft.

not that expensive to live in?
2021-12-08 23:46
If you have the money then probably Eindhoven, growing city which is already but will continue to grow as the biggest hub in southern Netherlands. That being said, Eindhoven is hella expensive. Out of those you listed, I would probably choose Tilburg if not for Eindhoven. It's one of the most diverse cities in the country in terms of population (tons of students, both genders and a lot of oldies too). Furthermore it has a lot of accommodation at reasonable prices. Utrecht is a good city because it's in between all the other big cities, however you run into a problem with expensive housing again. I also personally don't consider there to be much culture in Utrecht, it's more of a business city. Breda is pretty decent all around, gets beaten out one way or another by the others though. Utrecht better location country-wise, Tilburg cheaper housing and more diverse, Eindhoven larger scale and more of a hub.

Alright so it would be a better choice to start of with Tilburg and maybe during my career move to Utrecht or Eindhoven, the freeking problem is that I have always been an Ajax fan, I even liked them more than Club Brugge or Anderslecht haha but yeah thats football lol Do you have any knowledge about the girls in Tilburg? Or are Dutch girls in general just pretty and tall xd
2021-12-08 23:59
2 replies
Yeah I'd say Tilburg is a decent place to start. Funnily enough you'll still find a decent few Ajax fans even in the Eindhoven/Tilburg region which is predominantly PSV-favored. Not realistic to live near Amsterdam at a reasonable price rn though. In terms of girls, yeah Dutch girls in general are pretty tall. My personal opinion is that we have a lot of decent looking women but our high and low ends aren't filled out as much. Tilburg is definitely the best place in the south of the Netherlands when it comes to ratio of guys-girls though, the university has a bunch of courses which are popular amongst women. If you compare that to Eindhoven (tech university), it's a much better ratio and that's the place to go if you wanna date :)

Utrecht actually has a lot more historical and cultural value than Eindhoven. It is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands and unlike Eindhoven the city center definitely shows that.
2021-12-09 00:29
Are any of those cities fun to to visit for a day? Never been to a southern city in our country
2021-12-10 13:43
2 replies
Sure, you can fill a day in any of these cities pretty easily. I wouldn't say there's a whole lot of 'culture' or tourism attractions in Eindhoven, Tilburg or Breda. If you go with some friends or family then I'm sure you can find some fun things to do, but it's not as vast as Amsterdam for example. You would have to do your research to find some unique activities to do, especially since the culture isn't all too different from the north lol. So my answer is yes, you can fill a day or two in any of these cities just fine. Just have to have a rough idea of what you want to do and have some good company. On the other hand, don't expect some lavish cultural city centre full of touristic possibilities in any of these except maybe Utrecht.

What I love about Belgium is that we know Flemish and Dutch, that gave us the possibility to talk between 2 different nations, if you would put a Dutch person in Belgium he will have difficulties with the dialect of the city where he lives but if you would do it the way around then Flemish people could easily live in The Netherlands.

I used to speak with a few people from Oostende and all of them were intelligible except for one. I constantly had to ask the others to translate what he was saying. So it really depends on how much they speak with a dialect or how much they try to make themselves understandable. It's the same here, when people speak in their regional dialects without trying to speak ABN, it might be very difficult to understand them.
2021-12-10 13:54
2 replies
What is ABN though? What region really speaks without an accent?
2021-12-10 14:00
1 reply
Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands (General Civilised Dutch). Speaking ABN with a slight accent is very different from speaking your regional dialect. So no region speaks without an accent, but when they speak to you they do often try to speak ABN, which makes pretty much everyone very understandable. I imagine the same goes for Belgian people, when they speak their version of ABN theyre very understandable, but when they speak in some dialects its not even remotely comprehensible for Dutch people.
2021-12-10 14:23
I really doubt this mate. Have you ever been to the eastern or northern part of the country?? I reckon you may actually find it somewhat difficult to communicate with the locals there, especially the older generation. Here's a video giving some examples of the various dialects (not all), you can check it out if ur interested: youtube.com/watch?v=zHmcVjMzS-I&ab_chann..

I try to speak ABN, but I met most of them during the evening, after a few beers. When I have drunk a little I more easily switch to more of a dialect and forget to speak ABN. But they were able to understand me pretty well, it's just that I swallowed all of the vowels and used things such as kuj (kun je) and "giet we" (gaan we), which is a bit unusual to them I guess Tbf I only went to the western part of the country 3 times (2x Amsterdam and 1x Utrecht) and every occasion was going out, so its probably not the most accurate experience

Haha, alright fair. I've met some people that spoke like that as well. Its a heavier accent than which is spoken in my village though and I've always spoken more ABN with a bit of a Drents accent, which helps I guess. "Utrecht, Tilburg, Eindhoven or Breda, which one is the best city in your eyes." Utrecht by far. It's a very expensive city to live in though (Eindhoven is as well). Utrecht is a really nice place, extremely wealthy and beautiful old town. It also has the most students out of these cities by far. To add to this: I don't see why you'd move from Belgium to say Tilburg. It's very comparable to your own cities and probably a tad worse seeing Ghent, Brugge and Antwerp are very nice. Breda is a good city if you're a bit older and don't care about heaps of parties.

So you're suggesting me to save up a great amount of money and afterwards I should look for a job in Utrecht? Why Tilburg looks so interesting to me, is because it's located near Breda, Eindhoven, Antwerp(bit further), Rotterdam(likewise as Antwerp). My point is that there are a lot of fascinating cities around Tilburg, while there are only 3 cities I like to visit in Belgium. I know, I think about it too much.

Maybe Alkmaar is something for you too. I know its quite some distance from your town, but you live near the nature, you can come everywhere really fast with train. I don't know if its expensive, but else I would go for Tilburg. But I live inbetween Alkmaar and Amsterdam but I prefer Alkmaar all the way, Amsterdam is a shithole.

I think it's just a problem in Amsterdam to rent a proper apartment and to get hired in some important role.

you'll be accepted anywhere tbh. Breda and Tilburg might be more your style from the options you gave, little less busy compared to utrecht and eindhoven and also lower housing prices.

probably everything outside the "randstad" is fine. maastricht is also very nice but a bit far away from everything else. would also recommend 's-herthogenbosch. very easy to travel from with public transport. if you need any tips on ease things up, just hit me up
