no one willingly says "ah yes, california to too expensive (which is true) so i want to move to iowa". all of my friends and myself either say they wanna move to some place like texas, kansas, tennessee or oregon. literally anywhere but iowa

California is still top 5 in homeless per capita, but yeah, that would be a better metric. It's a huge problem & difficult to address when so many people want to live there - making prices crazy. Building enough housing to meet demand seems like the obvious move, but California also has a lot of building restrictions & residents that actively resist new housing because they believe it would lower their property value.

Honestly it should be per square mile, more relevant imo. If a state like Kansas has 1 in 200 homeless, there are still basically no homeless people if you lived there because there's so much empty space.

idk if homeless population necessarily represents the situation of the people tbh, especially in a state like California where a lot of the homeless population aren't actually originally from California.

Average rent across CA is more like $1,500, but in the cities it is much higher. It's more like $2,500 in SD and LA, and $3,000 in SF.
