I find biology quite useless, except anatomy and virology. Those are the only 2 topic that interest me

Well DNA is actually pretty interesting. Once you get a sense of what is possible with modern molecular biological methods, in terms of understanding geneclusters and the foramtion of their prodcts, aswell as the possibilities of basically copy&pasting DNA fragments into foreign organisms you begin to wonder if working with DNA could become the biggest perk hunt of all time. Like you could legitimately try to maipulate simple organisms to have ridiculous traits. It's like the biggest sandbox editor you could imagine.

economics is a pipeline for finance for most people. i don't think many other people find it fun either lol. the data might be interesting to model and predict, but just not fun

Most of those who want to work in financial industry dream of wall street. However they hire math, physics or cs graduates, not economists, that's why I listed those majors.

true true they just need smart people to either do excel or create trading algorithms lol, no matter the major. the big firms have training programs

Not sure about hedge funds in states, but I worked in portfolio management team of one European trading company, they didn't have any training program, I mean it was limited to explanation of produts traded on the exchange(it was a commodity trading firm). That industry needs you to be a problem solver and a creative person who is capable and willing to learn and create by himself. Btw I don't think anyone does any excel on wall street trading departments or anything close to that, the software is limited in functionality and data processing capability, I actually doubt they even use r or python for not being fast enough. I for sure know they use java and c++ for probably most part of their work, and ofc assembler for hft.
2022-01-18 06:25
And can you elaborate on the reason it's called a dismal science?

Described quite well in this article. wsj.com/articles/economics-is-dismal-but..
2022-01-18 05:46

The article just states the comment of Thomas Carlyle on the conclusions of Thomas Malthus, about economics being a "dismal science", which I don't know if you are aware of, but has long been proven incorrect. The clause that the article ponders over, of whether economics is a science or not due to it's affinity to politics and hence it's subsequent departure from objectivity, is in my opinion, explained very well by the fact that economics is as much a behavioral science as much an objective science. All the modern economic theory and predictions are derived heavily from the assumptions made on the behavior of people and their rationality. That itself is a problem for economist as they cannot objectively, and accurately measure or predict certain events due to obtuse actions of certain people. What I'm trying to say is that, dismissing the study of economics due to it being dismal is not justified. It is a deeper look into the behavior of people and their actions when faced with a financial decision.
