Do you mean ranking up from a game you lost?

I think it is. Because of the glicko-2 ranking system it isn’t as simple as wins and losses like elo. Your own performance greatly changes the chance to rank up. Also playing against people ranked higher than you increases the chance you’ll rank up. So technically, if you do really well individually in a loss against way higher ranked people u might still rank up.

Never seen that, dropped 40 on some kids and demoted after the game. Now that is csgo for you

I’ve never seen it. But multiple people claim it’s happened and it is made plausible by the way glicko works. Still a mystery though!

I've never heard of it happen but if it happened to your friend then I guess it is? Might be because mm has a set rank distribution, so maybe some other players in that rank bracket lost a lot of mmr so the system promoted your friend because even after losing he still had more mmr than those other guys who deranked

Or he performed really well against players with much higher mmr than he has.

Yeah maybe, I always figured that you can only lose mmr from a loss but maybe you're right

I’ve heard that the glicko-2 rank bracket shifts based on individual performance and the ranks u play against. But still a mystery!

I think this is the only possible scenario for this to happen. Imagine this (I chose random numbers to demonstrate my thoughts): You are global with 1025 elo (global is from 1000 and supreme is 900-1000). You lose a game vs low ranked people and now you have 975 elo. You lose another game vs high ranked people and you have 955 elo. During that game someone from the 1st match gets banned and you get 50 elo back. You lost 2 games and still rank up due to having 1005 elo.

"CS:GO follows a modified Glicko-2 ranking system, according to Valve. ... Factors such as kills, deaths, MVPs, assists, damage given, and bomb plants all affect a hidden numerical value that determines your place within a rank. A general in-game model to follow would be to play for the round win and not for kills"

"a hidden numerical value that determines your place within a rank" so I would call this number elo or hidden MMR, but whatever That this is not only effected by win/loss is also known, but as nobody knows how the ranks exactly work, I tried to showcase how an uprank while losing a match could work. The other factors are not really relevant in this case, but I get your point.

I was wondering if it was a glitch or smh

Their system doesnt make any sense. I had 6-7 wins and no rank up then I stopped playing MM that oftrn and just played 1 game a week and had like 2 L-2W- 2L- 1W and after that 1 W I got rank up even the enemy was weaker than before at 6 win streak
