just stay away from the newer VW tdi, it's choked to death and way less reliable than 1997-2003 TDI ALH engine which was bullet proof, post-2009 Renault DCI engine is the best right now and can be found in different brands like Dacia and even some Mercedes models like the CLA and the A-class

I bought 2006 Astra year ago as my first car, and it was a great decision. Cheap, reliable and pretty comfy considering it's price Don't go with anything crazy at the beginning, learn how to drive first (getting license =/ knowing how to drive) with something easy to drive + look for low fuel consumption

Yeah, the budget allows for the MK2. But as you said the MK1 looks better, especially the interior :) The MK2 uses way more cheap plastics and is slightly less practical. I'm not 100% sure, but as far as I know the reliability from the MK1 is also better.

At 3k USD I would buy something like: 1. Honda Civic EK4 - Reliable 90s, loads of fun, cheap repair. 2. Toyota Avensis 1,8-2,0 vti - Reliable 90s, well driving sedan, cheap repair, don't get scared away they use oil, doesn't matter, just throw some cheap 10/40 every now and then. 3. BMW E39 523/528i - Not reliable anymore since most have covered 150-200k miles and aren't well maintained, but if you find one, preferably automatic with loads of original Mtech equipment, you will be a happy youngster, prober 6 cylinder M52, great driving experience and loads of happy 6 cylinder notes. Best wishes and stay safe out there A car dude soon to turn 30 and owned and enjoyed anything from 1993 Toyota Corolla 1300 via MK4 supras to G30 LCI 545e.
