1. Did you like the movie? (Scale 1-10) 2. Did you read the book before hand? I'm doing research on people's reaction to the movie and the influence the book had. I'll publish results on a science journal.

Just score man i´m lazy. Ill write a mini review here just for you <3: Villeneuve presented the universe of dune in detail and quality. I felt that all the shots and camera angles were on point (b roll anda ambience in particular), special effects were not overdone and felt real and tidy. The supporting sound effects were outstanding (probably the best thing in the movie). Pacing was good (could have been better, that´s why I gave it a 9 really). Hope it helps.

I couldn't agree more. The cinematography was phenomenal and the sound editing/effects were stunning. The universe in this story is so expansive I thought that would be huge challenge for Villeneuve but it seems he pulled it off even for people who hadn't read the books.

this surprises me a bit because it seemed to me like a lot of the reason I enjoyed it so much was because of how many nuances I picked up from understanding the book. But cool to see it stands on it's own - at least for you. Just curious - what did you like so much about it?

Yes - and the second film will build on this a lot. It will be interesting to see paul become The One but not because he will just be all good - but because it won't be so one-dimensional. And yes, the imagery in the movie is t1.

I can't wait. It's interesting - I don't know that the second movie will have a ton of action based on what I remember from the book but I could be wrong (it will definitely have action, just not half the movie like you'd expect from a marvel film or something). But it really dives into the good/bad things that come from Paul ascension to being "The One".

I think that Villeneuve did an amazing job at giving those extra little details to the people that have read the books while, at the same time, keeping the movie accessible enough to broader audience so that someone who has no ideia about what dune is can enjoy it. For example, I read the books and loved them because it gave life to many things that lived only in my imagination up until that moment, My friends who read the book felt the same way. However, both my wife and my dad had zero prior knowledge of dune and they both really enjoyed it.

Absolutely loved the movie - 10 Read the books about 5 years ago I like many others thought this film was almost impossible to make and be faithful to the literature. It did and it was. Like Mark Kermode for the BBC said "When the Sandworm appears, Shit wow!, please watch this film in the cinema" People saying its sequel bait - It was just true to the books. Its an intense slow burning thriller that was accurate.

no doubt! Even the 5 minute battle sequence (so short but such impact) was simply epic. If anyone was going to do this movie properly, it was going to be Denis Villouosudofisdf (I can't pronounce his last name...). I love his attention to detail and his use of imagry to tell story that won't be part of the dialog. For instance, his regular reference to the bull head, which is a regular image in the books.

Also I think they should have expanded upon the ecological theme of the books and the vision of Kynes, that character was kinda underwhelming in the movie I also wonder if they'll introduce a certain Harkonnen in the sequel or leave his role to Bautista

7/10 i liked the first half or so, great visuals, setting, etc but then it started to drag, and its hard to explain, it gave me this feeling of how everything is predetermined, i knew nothing about dune going in, but still everything felt predictable, lowering overall impact, like the presentation itself gave you only 1 possible outcome, and its as if characters themselves know it and are ok with it, this guy will get betrayed, this guy is obviously will die, bad guy cant die its only 1st movie and so on

You've stumbled upon a key element of the story actually. The idea of predestination is a theme that is questioned throughout. Paul is actually really troubled with the idea that his life is all "part of a plan" and he's heading to something he has no control over. I think Part 2 will bring out more of his fear of this predetermined fate (he expressed it in the tent with his mother) but that fear haunts him. He sees him self being thrust toward this god-like figure but he recognizes that anyone with tremendous power is just as likely to be a tyrant and they are a savior. The question is, which will he be?

Props to Villeneuve for conveying it so well then, but having such big focus on it just made me less engaged, during the duel in the desert i was already like whats the point of this, just fade to black already. maybe more drastic emotional tone change during pov from other characters would help with that, and separate Paul even more, but Villeneuve movies often have this cold reserved feel to them

I get that - Villeneuve is so meticulous that it can come across as cold and reserved. And yet that scene was actually a pivotal point in Paul's journey. He doesn't want to be The One because he fears becoming a tyrant with unlimited power and we hope he doesn't. But we're told he only becomes the one prophesied about by shedding his old self (Paul). Then we find out that taking another person's life destroys your own life. So when Paul kills the man in the duel, he effectively destroys Paul and takes the first step to becoming The One. So he's off to a bad start if he wants to beat the odds of not being an all-powerful tyrant, considering his first step was to kill a man.

Read the first book and ultimately felt a little bit dissapointed with the movie. Movie obviously looks great, it's probably the most beautiful movie i've ever seen but I felt like the pacing was way too fast and some characters really didn't get alot of screen time like dr yeuh and the harkonnens. The movie spends barely any time building up the characters relationships especially paul and leto. Still excited for part 2 tho and I wonder how they gonna translate alia to the screen.

1.2, absolute dogshit, i dont even understand why the acting is so attrotious. 2. yes, also bad the writing is unsatisfactory, esp compared to contemporary fantasy. The ideas are quite fun, medieval fantasy is always appreciated but it's narrative driven with very little attention to the 'world' elements so it's dry AF like i'd rather read about actual historical events like siege of malta instead of siege of dune.world.

I've heard other people comment on the acting which I find a bit surprising. I thought it was pretty good. For instance the scene with the hand in the box, Chalomette does a great job of going through about 4 levels of pain/resolve all with very close up facial expressions. Which part or who didn't you like?

I read the book long ago and liked it. Thought a lot about it afterwards. Then saw the old film version and found it OK. Re-watched the old movie just before seeing the new one. The new movie is also just OK. I don´t think it adds much to the old movie. Both films are faithful to the Book. New film is visually nice, but the battle scenes are pathetic. I think the slow paced movie is nice. When the whole film is out you can chill to a double feature. I think it tries too hard to be deep and create a mood. Pretentious. The lines are spoken courtly/stilted and that annoys me in the newest film (reminds me of "The Phantom Menace" where the acting talent of Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor are wasted by their stiff/courtly Jedi manners), but I expect it to get better in the 2nd. Conclusion: Book - above average 7.5/10 Both film versions - average 5-6/10

I don't necessarily agree with your take but I appreciate your good explanation. I think the mood of a movie is a tricky thing. Where you found it to be pretentious, I found that it all added up to an 'epic' feel, something bigger than we joe-shmoes can relate to. After all, being a Jedi Master or the Lord of a prominent House in the Known Universe is kind of beyond our personal experience so it's hard to say how they should/would speak/behave.
2022-01-28 18:28
1. 6.5 2. Yes Had I not read the book before, my rating of the movie would have been lower (a 5 or 6) I felt the same way as to when I first saw the Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring ; i.e. good movie, but unsatisfying to watch as a standalone and clearly built to be part of a suite of movies. In other words, nothing really happens in the movie, the main event (lead by Dr Yueh) is mostly overlooked to put the focus on Paul. + I quite disliked some of the liberties taken by Villeneuve The other movies will hopeful give more sense to this one and my rating shall increase then.

I had the opposite experience with LOTR. I loved the movies but had a hard time getting through the books. I should probably try again now that i'm a bit older. You have a good point about Dr Yueh. We don't really get a big sense of who he is and how his betrayal is bitter/sweet. I guess Villenuenve just had to make certain choices about what was important and what couldn't be included, assuming that not EVERYTHING could be included.

I agree that when the new movie is complete, the whole experience will hopefully get better. At least in the book I prefer the part that comes after the first movie episode.

True. They have no charisma. Felt the same way when i watched "Valerian". I actually wanted to punch the guy playing Valerian, Dane DeHaan, though Cara Delevingne did well.

9/10 and i listened to 20 hour audiobook on audible before. book was too confusing to keep track of the characters sometimes tbh and movie made it easier to understand, even though as all adaptations do it's missing a lot of detail. for what its worth i enjoyed both

8/10 really enjoyed the film after not expecting much after mixed reviews. Didn’t mind the slow pace. Wasn’t half as good as 2049. Haven’t read the book.

I'd give the movie an 8/10 and yes I have also read the book.

Said it was ok to a friend who invited me to watch this movie to a theatre. I lied. That was a long and expensive 2,5h.

9/10 For me, it was less of a "movie" and more of a cinematic experience. Dune is very unique (Villenueve has a very special style and it's less traditional, from the art, to the sounds, to the visuals, to the pacing). It's the kind of movie that comes out once a decade. It's special. Now certainly in this day and age, people are used to marvel-type colorful action packed fast movies (which are fun) but Dune is different, it starts off as a slow burner, building this unique world/galaxy and escalating throughout. The plot is fine but overall it's more of a wholistic experience rather than just a standalone feature film. The sounds, visuals, and scale are truly impressive and rare. haven't read the book yet, but I like reading so i probably will at some point.

Well said. It definitely had an impact on me. Walking away from the cinema, I immediately wanted to talk about the film. I went a second time with a friend who had also seen it previously and we stayed afterward for quite a will just enjoying talking about the style, story lines, technical aspects, etc. We plan to watch it together again at home so we can pause and discuss. On the other hand, I saw Spider Man, No Way Home, which was enjoyable, but left no impression on me. It left nothing for me to talk about or think about. Not to knock Marvel or anything (they're good in their own way) but simply don't create the experience that a movie such as Dune creates.
