$1 Million Really?
 |
Europe X1gma
How can Valve do this? How can they reduce the Prize pool from $2 Million to $1 Million? Dota enjoys a Prize pool of $40 million and they can't even spare $2 Million for CSGO When CS clearly had better viewership then Dota. This is like Opposite of progress. CSGO major is getting a reduction is Prize pool when there is no clear reason to reduce the prize pool. Its like they all the money from cases and inject them in dota. Not to mention we have missed 3 majors in Pandemic so there should have at least been 3 majors with $2 million Prize pool. Seriously Fuck u Valve

Dude! Teams and orgs really don't give a damn if it's 1 mil or 2. They make most of their money from sticker money, sponsor deals etc. The major having 2 mil as it's prize pool is irrelevant to teams wanting to invest coz the prize pool is 2 mil. Get it??

Its not about the money. But reducing the Prize pool gives out wrong impressions. Higher prize pool bring more viewership and more competition because the stakes are high. And not all team receive sticker. Last major only playoffs team received sticker money.
2022-02-02 15:27
1 reply
No. Every team in the major gets their fair share of the sticker money. How much you get is decided how good you perform in the tournament. The thing is that the last major wasn't the most viewed major because of the 2 mil prize pool. It was because there hadn't been a big LAN event with a crowd in about 2 years.
2022-02-02 19:07
If you actually think I give a shit about how much money is invested in cs, you are dead wrong What I’m worried about is that Volvo doesn’t give a single shot about my fav game, while investing everything into dota. Cs get all the scraps. And now imagine tf2, that game doesn’t get any love what so ever. Pp for dota goes up exponentially, while in cs it’s decreasing

I don't buy into this thing that more money = more competition Those guys earn 30k per month anyways, they play tournaments for big prize pools every other week. It being a major is what drives competition, not some money for people that are already rich regardless and won't have to work another day in their life. Same for viewers, sure it can bring some headlines but which cs fan watches a tournament for its prize pool?
2022-02-02 13:51

2022-02-02 13:54
Bro just use common sense/logic, more money = more teams interested/invested in major (especially teams that don't earn much/don't get much recognition) = more competition even if it didnt add more competition than it already has, more viewers would be interested in watching because of the huge prize pool money, just look at how much people are talking about dota all of a sudden because of the prize pool money, they get so much recognition now, i didnt even know what dota looks like until I heard about the insane prize money
2022-02-02 13:56
4 replies
yea and that is the reason why dota 2 is so fucked up now, they dont need ppl who doesnt give a fuck about that game to watch just because there are a lot of money on the line, especially at valve sponsored event. It only disvalues smaller events
2022-02-02 14:05
Your whole argument relies on teams not being 100% invested into competing in the major, which I just don't think it the case. It's a god damn major, players and teams will try their best regardless of the prize pool. The sticker money system I think is better for low-earning teams, because just being in the major guarantees them a good income, if that was put into the prize pool, the bottom teams would potentially earn less money overall. Valve could go out and put whatever prize pool into the major and the more would always be better for viewership and teams, but I don't blame them for just keeping it steady, they already have a generous "crowdfunding" in place with the stickers and the viewer passes, they just don't brag about it and post these statistics publicly

Yes because you come from the assumption that more is better. Isn't an orgasm better when you hold it for a while? The latest major is the best example of this. Numbers were never as huge and none major brought so much hype and life to the scene. Why? Because we didn't have any for some time.
2022-02-02 14:07

Nah 3 majors are too much but things in esport are just too fast. Player can play on top level what 4-5 years? The best ones stay for 6-7. Some play 2-3 years and are already dropping from Top 20 teams. Perfect would be first half of year is one major cycle and second half is second major cycle (quals, RMRs and event). 2 majors is not too much and 1 is definetly too little. Ofcourse it all depends on point of view. For fan that watch cs very often even 3 wouldnt be too much and for some 1 is enough. 2 is sweet spot.

That's why it's better to have one tournament at the end to summarize the whole year with changes to follow after. It makes much more sense even when you consider the speed of the scene. As a viewer I wouldn't mind to have even 3 majors, but I look at it from the "what's good for the scene" perspective.

Exactly, PGL brought so much hype and life to the scene cuz there was almost 2.5 year break between majors + overall scene was kinda dead cuz most of the tournaments were played online. 1 major per year won't get these type of numbers.

Let me explain this 1 mn is normal.prize money Stokholm major had 2mn as 2 majors were clubbed together Sticker, signature sales go directly to the partocopating teams Dota does not have such stckers etc..hence a portion of prize money is increased ny operation passes

Well, "normal" used to be 250k, no real reason it should remain at 1m, also no reason to not crowdfund CS as well.

There's also no reason to invest more in 10y old game, especially if viewership of majors are good.
2022-02-02 14:29

What are you talking about, of course there is. Just add more pre-major shit to buy in the game, team-specific gloves, skins, agents and so on, come up with something fresh to sell, then take a portion of that money and put the rest in the prize pool. Win-win situation. They don't even have to invest in the major itself, just invest into making shit for the game, and not only will they get more money, but so will the players, and we'll be able to boast about how massive our prizepools are, without having to reference some fucking stickers that nobody even knows how much they make.
2022-02-02 14:37
"Sticker, signature sales go directly to the partocopating teams" not really cuz they get 50%
2022-02-02 14:16
cs has multiple events across the year where teams compete for prize money (dota doesn't afaik, only international, 3kliksphilip has a video about this), I imagine total prize money per year dota vs cs would roughly be in the same region, furthermore the prize pool doesn't include the sticker revenue which probably surpases the prize money while the international prize pool is including the season pass or whatever prize the number looks diffrent but the outcome is probably more simmilar and the way cs prizes and tournaments are structured give more opportunities for smaller teams to get about as theres multiple tournamnets/chances across the year

TI are a high tier events above major but Dota majors have less prize pools than CS. So CS majors > Dota majors and they could implement that prize pool method for that considering CS TI is very unlikely.

why can't we have the type of prize pool like dota 2 has? like for every souvenir purchases, a small percentage goes to the prizepool or something. 😐 That's why some people aren't as hype as the dota fans are when it comes to major games.
2022-02-02 15:14
They should increase the prize pool. Things like intel grand slam encourage teams to be in their best form year round which gave us astralis, liquid and navi eras for $1m. Bigger prize pools would certainly attract a lot of ambitious orgs.
2022-02-02 15:14
They need to pay players more to reduce corruption; people can bet against themselves and make more if the prize pool is too small...
2022-02-02 15:15
the entire csgo scene is rigged. valve makes most of their money getting paid by mafia betting websites and keeping the same people in the same positions for maximum corruption
2022-02-02 15:15
2 mio was cause of no major in a long time. AND more important, if Valve would give the cs go major the same money, lets say 40mio , as in dota, it would instantaneous devalue any other tournament that won't step up their prize pool to figures like that. This might lead to certain teams playing only the majors and the respective qualifiers

Massive disappointment. It's an embarrassment that despite breaking all viewership records we go back to 1M. And don't give me that "now we have 2 majors per year again" crap. A Major cannot have the same prize pool as IEM Katowice and IEM Cologne. And now they only give stickers to players that reach the playoffs. The same prize pool as Valorant that's only 2 years old. Even PUBG has more, they had over 11M between 2 majors last year. PUBG!!! The combined peak viewership of both events was 412K. We had 2.7M! What a disgrace.

2022-02-02 15:27
Valve always puts a base prize pool of $1,600 000 in Dota 2 The International's and the rest of the prize pool is gotten by crowdfunding, which means that 25% of the money made from their battle pass goes to the prize pool every year. So it's not like Valve puts all of their money in Dota, CS just doesn't have crowdfunding for the major tournaments. Maybe they could do like that as well and put like 10% of the money gotten with the operation pass sales to each of the 2 yearly majors' prize pools, but as of now, they aren't doing that. But I get what you're saying. If Dota 2 deserves to get crowdfunding to get such huge prize pools, like $40 000 000, then CS definitely deserves the same as well. CS has already surpassed Dota's player and viewer counts, but I guess Gaben just loves Dota so much, that he doesn't even care for CS or its player base like he does for Dota. Always shows up at The International's and all too, but never in a major. It is sad, but what can you do.
2022-02-02 15:31
Did you forget about the profit from stickers? In Dota this profit is included in winning pool and is given only to 1winner. in csgo this profit goes to all equally. but yeah Gaben loves Dota more

Well we are back to 2 majors per year and the main source of money for teams isn't prize pool, it's item sales (stickers, patches etc.) I'm pretty sure that money is more or less equal to (or even more than) TI's prize pool.

Its not about the money to the team but bigger prize pool brings more competition and there is more stakes for every match. Bigger prize pool also attracts more audience. Plus if you have already organized a 2 mil dollar major going back to 1 mil dollar major seems like a setback.

so? they saved money on 3 majors total from when the pandemic started to the last major, which means the next 3 majors should get the money that they didn't spend on those 3. It's not 2 years = 2 mil it's about the money they didn't spend in those years which they are just greedily pocketing for themselves.
2022-02-02 18:52

2022-02-02 18:50
yeah honestly really garbage move from valve. We missed 3 majors during the pandemic, all TO's suffered losses because they couldn't host events while the game's player base went up because of lockdowns and Valve made even more money while releasing the same garbage-cash grab operations, with no fun missions. Now they provide a prize pool less than what other TO's are already doing-Cologne, Blast world finals etc. It's a shitty move from valve, at the very least there should have been 2 majors with 2,000,000$ prize pool
