Grand Slams
 |
Denmark quasivacuum
There are two ways to win a Grand Slam: Condition A: Win 4 out of 10 consecutive Master events with one of the events being a designated event Condition B: Win 6 out of 10 consecutive Master events A designated event is just Katowice + Cologne + Potential ESL Major imgur.com/a/nvdLVjV Since thats the case, its pretty weird conditions, because I doubt anyone will ever win based on condition B since u need 6/10 instead of 4/10, and its also just weird that it has to be an ESL Major (I know it has to do with sponsorship but still) For example, you could win 3 Master events + ESL Major, and your team will have won a Grand Slam. But if u win 3 Master events + a PGL major you dont have a Grand Slam even though its not like winning an ESL major is more prestiguous than winning a BLAST or PGL major, it just makes it weird. Because a team with a Grand Slam + a major is seen as more accomplished than a team with just a major, even though they have literally won the same tier tournaments and its outside the teams control whether its a PGL major or ESL or BLAST major. Its something to be mindful of when blindly holding Grand Slams in high regard.

isnt pro league part of the grand slam as well?

yeah cuz its sponsored by intel

nice so faze are 2 wins away then and vitality would be the next closest

yeah and because Navi isnt in iem dallas I feel like the tourney is locked for faze

Yes FaZe are 2 wins away now, but if they just won an ESL major instead of a PGL/BLAST major they would be only ONE win away from a Grand Slam with 7 chances in the pocket to lock it in, meaning, win 1 of the next 7 master events and u get a Grand Slam. This is why I find it to be silly when youre trying to use Grand Slams as an objective measure of a teams success, sure, it does indicate something, but u can literally win the exact same tier tournaments as a Grand Slam winner and not have a Grand Slam because its not an ESL event

Has it ever happened that a team won 4/10 large tournaments without getting a grand slam?
2022-05-23 21:38

with most big events being sponsered by intel I doubt it has ever happened, but the way its set up there is still a way it can happen
2022-05-23 21:40
I doubt it has happened, but theres only been 3 winners so we dont have a good enough sample size to go off of It could definitely happen the way I describe it

It could happen but seems very unlikely

Its not as unlikely as u make it out to be, if a team is on 3 wins, which isnt weird to assume a team would be on 3 wins? and they proceed to win a PGL/BLAST major, they will not have a grand slam. If FaZe proceeds to only win 1 out of their 8 next events (it should actually be 7 if we count Antwerp but w/e), then they will also de facto have a grand slam without actually having it

SK late 2016 and early 2017, but there was no IGS yet
2022-05-23 22:52
I agree its kinda sad that they lock it behind sponsered events but you know they have their money to make, I mean even blast recognizes the pro leagues and the major irrespective of who the host is for their Global final invites so it sure can be done..
2022-05-23 21:39
yeah that's stupid but it is how it is. Btw if vitality had managed to secure the EPL14 upset and deny NAVI's IGS, there would've been a chance of NAVI not getting it, despite winning Major, BLAST Fall and BLAST World final in a row

ya they changed sometime back. now if you want to win a grandslam, you need to win one of katowice, cologne or a esl major
2022-05-23 21:40

Yeah I see. Not like teams would win it without winning one of those imo coz ud need to win 6, but yeh.
2022-05-23 21:45
What you brought up is a tiny tiny edge case but sure. Not understanding the last part though, because a Grand Slam is an impressive feat regardless

yes its impressive, but if you win a igs based on a win at an esl major, then ur just more lucky and not better then lets say faze now

Faze will win an IGS probably so I don't see how anyone would think that that team is better
2022-05-23 21:49
esl hasnt hosted a major since 2019(iem katowice 2019) and before that esl cologne 2016, i think they've drifted away from majors

they was supposed to have the rio 2020 major so i dont see why they wouldnt have a rio 2022 major, also they hinted towards it on their twitter 3 hours ago

yea they're probably going to have an iem or esl rio 2022, but i'm just saying that esl has not hosted nearly as many majors recently as they have back in 2014-2016

Faze are still favorites to win grand slam as there will be no navi and spinx in dallas. How stupid it might sound IGS is an "event" held by ESL and only we can do is play by their rules. I agree with your point entirely but IGS in my book is one of the conditions for teams contending for their era as winning it requires not only high peaks but also consistency against t1 opposition

everyone knows that grand slam is stupid, teams like nip would have also won a grand slam but it wasnt a thing back then, do we then view the old nip roster as less accomplished?? no ofc not

this is really weird, I hope they will change it soon. It seems this trophy is getting more prestigious every year and is valued almost or as major.

I doubt it will change, because its a problem of sponsorship and affiliation, its not something valve decides.

Yeah I know but It would be very good for the whole scene to make it more absolute if you know what I mean — something that reflects your history accomplishments without any 'but'. They really should consider to extend their partnership list and make this trophy more independent from one company and so more valuable from csgo history point.

btw the 6 event path no longer exists, the only way to get a grand slam this season is to win 4 events including at least one of either kato, cologne, or esl major.

I feel like this is the rise of the big orgs that couldn't shine before due to astralis' dominance in 2018-2019. First NAVI now FaZe this is very exciting if FaZe gets IGS not only they are the best but the pressure to defend their battleground and crown gets higher.
