i agree like this is an internet forum, we're not writing a paper and you're not operating in an official capacity at work or something. so there's no point in trying to sound all proper or smart or something like that, there's nobody to impress. spelling, grammar etc - as long as you made yourself understadable it's not particularly important.

It depends the part of the city you're talking about. Most probably you'll stay in the safest zone, which where are located the hotels, bars and other touristic attractions. The biggest threat for someone like u is being a dumb tourist using your iphone or camera in the middle of the street and most probably you're gotta be robbed easily.

I know that ESL won't host a major in the slum, and I also know that Rio also has the wealthy, safer zone just like Chicago does. We've had 2 events in Chicago from ESL and no one said a word even though there's also the "warzone" area in there (inb4 you tell me I don't have a US flag and am commenting on chicago). Even if I had a brazilian flag or said I lived there, you will still have no proof of that, so don't take fake flagging too serious, it's hltv. Right? I don't remember seeing threads about IEM Chicago in 2018 or 2019. Plus, everyone was safe, players had no complaints (that I remember) and the event was held with no issues in a sophisticated area of Chicago. No point thinking players will get robbed just cause the Major will be held in Rio. Rio is huge, there's the poorer and the wealthier area, the area with zero security and the area with maximum security and also the uncivilized area and the civilized one. You aren't fully immune to some pick-pocketing, but ESL wouldn't make this happen if it put any player, organization or any other element that is directly related to CS:GO at risk, at least for as far as the hospitality is concerned.

Brazil isnt that dangerous, but when compared to many european countries it is reasonably more dangerous, the thing about phones is, dont walk waving them around too much, and ffs get a guide,
If you dont want to, then I can only say, DO NOT, in ANY circumstance go to the slums/favelas, they are not that dangerous(you probably wont be killed if you dont get too close to the center/the top) but you're probably gonna get robbed and maybe beaten.
Other than that, the zone of the event is pretty chill, you can relax, I dont think anyone would rob you there.
Always stay in places close to other turists or people you know, and crowded places are generally safe in almost the entire city.
Lastly, rule of thumb, upper class zones are basically safe, and tbh, for foreigners, are relatively cheap.
If you get mugged following those rules, i can only say, unlucky. But you would probably get shot in the US with the same luck

Kingston is that bad they strongly advise you not to leave your Hotel at night, because if you get into trouble the police don't help you. They have gated entrances to your hotel and armed guards around it, crazy.

I lived in Rio for six years, during these years I was robbed only one time, during the exit of an sport event, while trying to protect some woman with her 2 infants of some massive fight ocurring on the entrance of the public transportation (specifically, their train station).
Other than this time, what I used to do is to never look kinda lost, never walk on poorly light streets and I always kept my head up, like I'd be noticing my surroundings and its suspicious activities and behaviours. This makes those bad people choose to not make you an target, simply because there are easier targets.

Back when I lived on more affluent neighborhoods I felt super safe, sure there are plenty of criminal occurrences but it is overwhelmingly concentrated on favelas and poorer neighborhoods, on the more up class places theres tons of police patroling nonstop plus private security on every outlet and condo
ATM I am living right next to a very dangerous favela, and I have heard many gunfights, but since the neighborhood itself is not complete garbage, theres TONS of police cars blocking all the exits of the favela, and patroling the neighborhood nonstop, the violence is very concentrated in the favelas and immediately adjacent streets, if you are a tourist you will NEVER EVER have any reason to come even remotely close to a place like this
As a tourist you are at a much much higher risk of being overcharged for food at the beach than being mugged or suffering any kind of molestation at the hands of criminals
If you read up on the cases where gringos come here and it ends bad for them its usually people who insisted on traveling alone, didnt have a friend/guide to help them visit "exotic" places and violated basic common sense rules that keep you safe in a foreign land
All that said, Rio is safe for tourists, the arena is in a safe location, and due to the Dollar/euro exchange rates most foreigners will be surprised at how fucking cheap everything top class is gonna be for them, hotels, ubers, food, great nightlife, hookers, drugs, etc. You will live like fucking kings
You will be able to afford premium hotels at the beach and it will cost as much as a shitty room in belgium, the places you will be staying with be super fucking safe, everything is gonna be fine, and there will be tons of hot brazilian girls dying to have some gringo dick in the hopes of making you fall in love and taking them away from this shithole ... i mean wonderful city

I think that this is a common thing in "favelas", after all not even the police goes there so you should do just like me and don't go there either, but favelas is just a area and of course the major will be hosted far away from these areas.

All my family on my mother side lives in Rio. They pretty mutch never got assaulted, robbed, gun pointed in their entire lives. How they did that? Just avoid the already known dangerous places. In fact, my grandmother got assaulted her first time in a small town that I live in, the woman has 80+ years. Rio is dangerous? Yes, but you can get around safely. My advice is, ask your hotel staff or your airbnb host where to go and how to go and you should be fine.

They seemed to be having a lot of fun :)

Well the country as any other place in the world has safer areas and some not that safe areas... I live in the south and 99% of the things the other Brazilians said do not apply here, nor anywhere else really, Rio and São paulo are special cases because they are the biggest cities and may have high rates of violence depending on the area, my opinion is: you'll be totally fine as long as you don't go on traveling across the city (which is big af), you won't be robbed for having your smartphone out of the pocket or smth like that, but as in any other place on earth... just be a normal human being and beware of strange people;;;

it's not very safe.. u will have to be very alert at your surroundings, people will try to rob you if they see ur not local (depends on the place on rio tho, some places are safer than others ofc) there are slums or favelas that you should not go, alot of drug dealers and weapons, stay on the big centers on the cities and ur safer there

If you enter in the "wrong" favela you may just die. That's the level of violence. Other than that, the tourist areas are quieter. Just don't be silly. The maximum violence in these areas is robbery and theft.
It's one of the worst regions in the country. If Brazil has a bad reputation, Rio de Janeiro plays a big part in this.
The locals are impolite and they'll always try to take advantage of you.
Don't go to the beach with your cellphone and wallet, some 14yo will probably rob you.
Don't go for long walks at night, you will get robbed.
Don't ask for police help, either they are corrupt or in a fucked up mental state.
And don't visit favelas if you value your life.

Barra da Tijuca is one of the safest places in Rio (except on the beach). It's easy to get to Jeunesse Arena.
Survival guide 101: don't use your phone while walking on the beach.
You likely won't be robbed, trust me. Just remember some rules:
1 - no hanging around with expensive stuff (it includes cellphones, keep it in your pocket or bag)
2 - don't go to favelas, it's dangerous mostly.
3 - be alert of your surroundings
4 - don't walk at night

Rio de Janeiro is considered a paradise for tourism.
If you inform yourself well and know where to go, you won't have any problems.
Avoid favelas if this is your first time visiting the city, always be aware of what is happening around you and take precautions that any visitor should take anywhere in the world such as: do not display expensive material goods, do not buy products on the street that you don't know, don't go into suspicious places like slums and empty streets, keep your distance from homeless people and beggars and keep in mind where to find information posts for tourists in case of need.
If you have a friend who lives in Rio de Janeiro, it would be smart to ask him to guide you around the city or to refer you to someone of trust, if necessary, pay some commission (dollars and euros are very strong in Brazil), have a native accompanying you can save you a lot of money and avoid unpleasant situations like harassment from street vendors and scammers.

Its kinda sad to read some stuff you guys been posting about RIO. Once, any of you get there (if you attend), you will probably feel a little weird, because all the way from the airport to that suburb might be a bit dangerous and not so good looking.
Once you get there:
i would recommend you to stay in Barra da Tijuca OR close. It is insanely nice, full of bars, events, beautiful people (you are gonna remember that), there is also a nice beach. It's a rich area, you wont have ANY problems with security. There are lots of things to do there too. The accommodations are great, the food is incredibly good in Brazil. Everything in an affordable price.
Just search it on google and stop making excuses. If you don't want to come, them don't do it, loose the opportunity to go to the best major ever. cya

I honestly don't see the point of going if the entire casting/hosting inside the arena would be Portuguese.
There would be 99% Brazilians so won't understand much conversations here and there.
Better would be like going to Rio as a vacation, spending some time on beaches and resorts, enjoy their culture as a tourist and as a side-day a major. Maybe that's a better way to go about it.

The place where the major will be held is safe (Barra da Tijuca/Recreio/Jacarepaguá). Be aware, learn some words in portuguese and you will be fine.

in famous places or around rich areas like leblon or copacabana is very safe, brazil isnt like u gonna get out your house and get stabbed
Like everyone said u need vests, then make sure u dont bring anything with u so u dont get robbed, idk if its legal or not but always have some weapon with u, maybe tazer, spray or knife. It would be nice to have personal guide and bodyguards, if u can afford them ofc. And u need money to pay for things so i would suggest holding money into shoes. Thats all, have a nice trip
