Im from Rio and let me be real here: most of you would not consider it safe. Nor any other city in BR (and I'd even say SA).
Pickpockets and other forms of petty theft are really common and its 100% an issue. You have to be aware at all times about that.
Gun violence is not common in the parts where tourists visit/major is going to happen (there can be a whole debate about why/how/when/where gun violence happens here).

Pickpockets are an issue even in most big European cities (I’ve found Paris to be particularly full of them).
But if you take some precautions getting pickpocketed is pretty unlikely imo

You'll be fine in both tbh, the only major things I'd say to you would be: 1- dont go out with expensive things like cameras and stuff (if you do, you should not get robbed though, but the odds are higher) 2 - try not to go out alone (cause imo usually criminals tend to aim towards people they deem easy prey, groups usually scare them away).

As a South African this is an impossible comparison. You don't specify the city nor the area of the city. Major will be held in a safe, touristy place in Rio, while the crimes and security issues normally are up north. If you compare a big city with tourism in South Africa like Cape Town or Johannesburg to Rio, it's kind of similar. You are prone to being pick-pocketed or even gun assaulted in the slum, but in the city, although still possible, way less likely

People do all sorts of crazy things. We had brazilians on the last major that just went there for that. But thats not even my point. The point is that violence is not widespread in Rio, but rather focused on specific areas for a number of socio-economic reasons and its mostly unseen by tourists. But crime (aka petty theft) is very much an issue, specially if you have no experience with that

They have a huge fanbase and they are literally the biggest supporter of Counter Strike (nation wise). It is really understandable why they've chosen Brasil but the things about safety and etc are major issues imo.

Lots of people would, maybe the brasilian portugese in the arena is gonna soften it now but I would have expected a lot of people to just take a holiday there for a week and finish it off with the major

I would not count pickpocket as "unsafe"
More so most larger cities have 1 or several areas you typicially should avoid as a tourist.
But Im glad for your msg and I still would like to visit Rio sometime, and if I do Ill do my research beforehand.

I'm not from Rio and even for us Rio is very dangerous, but I agree with you if we stay at tourist areas we'll be safe, just please don't go to visit a favela like you're visiting tourist area and don't go walk when you can't see almost nobody when it's dark.
Also, avoid use expensive stuff like watches, necklaces and walking with your cellphone on your hands.

Yes, sadly comparing with the most places in Europe is violent is terms that you can be robbed easily.
Just stay safe and enjoy the view and parties, Rio is very beautiful and fun, if you wanna go out by night just call a Uber and go directly to an busy area.

Yeah, thats usually a sound general advice. I've had European friends visit favelas and they loved it. I've done social work there and I know better than most how things work there and its a really fine line between safe and unsafe. For tourists? Usually criminals dont bother them. For brazilians? def recommend you not going there

Thanks for keeping an open mind. We def have problems and you guys def should be aware that they do exist, but its not a warzone. I'm not really concerned with safety issues (besides those I've highlighted) but instead with crowd behaviour at the Arena lol I foresee a looooot of noise calling

Yup, and its a good depiction of how it works too (even if its ofc dramatized).
Elite squad is much the same, it shows the action of BOPE (kinda like SWAT) against organized crime. The main character (Captain Nascimento) was super well received by the public despite the gruesome acts he commits. If you dig deeper into why is that, you'll find that the average brazilian is tired of those corrupt, drug lords, the judiciary etc and it accepts anything that kinda serves as "payback". Really interesting from a socio-political standpoint too

Its not so bad in Brazil as people make it out to be. Just remember Bullet proof vest, your AK-47 and armored car, and a few heavy armed security guards. Then remember to never exit your armored vehicle at anytime, And only drive during day time. Always check for road side bombs though and never make eye contact with anyone, just follow these simple rules and you will most likely only be wounded.

Yes, I've created this thread after dodging a carpet bombing raid conducted by Drug Lords that the AA guns werent able to deter. Ofc, this was after I had to mercy kill some wounded kids on the street on my way to cash in the stolen organs from some Danish idiot that came here. But other than that, all's good
