2022-05-26 13:48
ESL are limited because they have no experience in hosting big events There are more things to consider when hosting a tournament then whether or not you can sell tickets
2022-05-26 18:15

What do you mean no experience? Since 2007 hosting IEM and since 2014 it's been hosting CSGO events, 6 majors included 1. ESL One Katowice 2014 2. ESL One Cologne 2014 3. ESL One Katowice 2015 4. ESL One Cologne 2015 5. ESL One Cologne 2016 6. IEM Katowice 2019

ESL host medium sized events 5-15k. Never hosted one past 20k. People are asking for minimum 40k. That's literally double. If you know anything about hosting events, you don't just randomly make such a mega large event with no experience. It's a big gamble, and majors already have enough issues. It will also have to be in a venue that they have no experience in. Just adding on the issues.

Tell me a CSGO event with full over 20k venue
2022-05-27 01:45

Has never happened, that's why it's such a big deal that some people want ESL to do it. 20k audience in sports itself, isn't such a big deal. Tier 3 english football clubs get that kind of crowd every match. They would essentially walk in to uncharted territory. Very risky

Do stadiums offer cover from rain? What about AC? Or are you expecting players and fans to cram in a closed stadium in Brazil heat?

There are some football stadiums with cover. But not in Rio, that's the main problem. The only option in Rio would be Maracanã, but its not entirely covered. But they could cover just the players and equipment, I don't mind being in the open (it doesnt rain that much in november)

you realise that if games are at 8pm, no one from EU will be able to watch? They'd never do that. 90% of good teams are from EU. Games will be in the middle of the day so they're in the evening for europeans

I really liked germany, denmark and spain. portugal looks like some cities in brazil and i liked france but i hated paris. in paris there are rats everywhere, the city smells like pee and there are many scammers, i was surprised because paris seems more dangerous than my city in brazil
2022-05-26 23:59
I get you point, but Europe is a different case. Considering that the last major was in belgium, it would make sense for the commentary to be in the most spoken language in belgium, however since most of the people attending to the arena are from different countries (mostly from europe) the best choice would be english, since its a universal language. Brazil is almost as big as Europe, with the difference that instead of having dozens of different languages spoken in this area, we just have 1. I wouldn't care if the commentary was in english (I actually prefer it), but since 90% of the people attending to the arena are brazilians and many of them dont wanna bother learning a second language ESL should just stick with portuguese.
2022-05-26 00:09
2 replies
The best way to go with this is make multiple commentary boxes for different languages. Need not to support all but select which feels kind of important in terms of type of crowd. Make only one desk voice which in the arena everyone will be able to hear all the time and other for broadcasting live. You may have some small segments in which commentators of different languages can interact with the crowd but there should be one language most probably Portuguese in this case, to be broadcasted in the arena. Thats the best way I feel it could be managed
2022-05-26 08:19

i guess that's how it's gonna happen, except the englando commentators wont get to interact with the crowd.

AC in unnecesary though...Brazil is not that hot, specially in November (probably between 20~27°C down here in the southeast). And only the players and the equipment in general needs to be roofed, the crowd can stay in the open. As we say in Brazil, "I am not made of sugar" hahaha

I mean, they can provide AC and a roof for the players, and it shouldn't be a problem for you guys and for people from countries with the same weather, sure some people from the northern hemisphere will find it unbearable but I'll take that trade for having double the crowd.

The problem is that there are literally staff flown out many months in advance to stake out the potential locations, and the planning that goes into a good Major (we want a quality one this time!) is monumental. The logistics involved are absolutely massive, and probably too much to manage. So as much as it's come up as a talking point, there's not that much which can be done. Bear in mind there are many, many other reasons
