Historical European Martial Arts. We read treaties from the Middle Age and we try to reproduce them. Main weapons are Longsword and sword/buckler but you can work on any sources you can find. We work with pole-axe, scythe and stuff like that in my club. We spare with harder gear than Olympic fencing though

I'm an instructor in a club, yes: Spatha Medievae in Liège, Belgium. I attend tournaments too. I did the Bunny Bash before the covid, ended up at the last16 stage, I did some regional tournaments in the other club around Liège,.I wanted to go to the Greek tournaments this year but I couldn't due to weddings. Looking forward to next year and a new season! HEMA isn't the best sport during summer. One of my goal is to pick up my sword and visit new countries through their HEMA club. I plan to visit Norway that way for instance, same goes for Latvia.

You have plenty in Italy. Two of the most used sources for longswords are Italians: Fiore de'i Liberti in Fiore di Battaglia and Achile Marozzo: Opera Nova
2022-06-24 09:51
generally, the big four are BJJ, boxing, wrestling and Muay Thai If ur gonna go for Muay Thai I highly recommend getting a year of boxing in first so you can practice proper punching form and head movement BJJ takes several years to actually get good at but it's arguably the deadliest if you get in a 1v1 depends on what your objectives are tbh
2022-06-23 17:09

So if I do 2-3 year of only BJJ, I should be decent?

no, it depends on your coach, you can do 5 years of bjj and still get choked out by a 14 yo white belt
2022-06-23 17:22
I'd argue that purple belt is when you start getting scary, thats like ~5 years depending on your talent and dedication but like #36 said shit can always happen
2022-06-23 18:41
Blowjobs are indeed deadly
2022-06-23 17:34
I already trained Muay Thai.. I liked a lot, I'm pretending practice again in the future. I think it's good for self-defense and lose weight. I dont like lifting weight and this stuff, so Muay Thai is more dynamic and fun for me.
2022-06-23 17:11
1 reply
Muay Thai seems to be the popular choice. I find lifting boring myself.
2022-06-23 17:20
what's the point of martial arts? the chance of you ever needing it for self-defense is super slim. The chance of it working for self-defense is even slimmer. And if you just want to it for exercise there are better ways. Just get mace or pepper ball gun if you're scared.

i mean if you suspect you're gonna run into that situation, i doubt you can do anything at all except maybe get yourself killed im open to being corrected on this, but even with blunt weapons, any aggressive person has an advantage on you no matter how skilled you are at punching and kicking i mean we humans can defeat bears and lions with sticks and blades beyond that, i truly dont know i just gave you what the sports i personally like and also find useful tbh any other sports you enjoy like basketball or football can be great for exercise too

2022-06-23 18:17
Martial arts are not limited to physical training. They also touch on stress resilience, coordination, social aspects, among others. Running and swimming won't help you to deal with the panic and the adrenaline rush you'll feel in a fight.
2022-06-23 18:19
Even if you're not going to use it in case you're being assaulted, knowing how to defend yourself and your loved ones is very important, especially when it's healthy exercise and boosts your confidence up. If you know BJJ you can easily sleep troublemakers.

+1 everyone should know how to defend themselves especially females also learn how to deescalate and prevent an actual fight

muay Thai is good cause you practice with full body punches knees elbows grappling kicks etc boxing if u wanna master 1v1 punching but u wont learn how to defend vs kicks nor understand how much they hurt kickboxing is a bit like Muay thai, but is more "sporty" with more rules, bigger gloves etc

taekwondo is very particular compared to other MAs muay thai approach to everything can be better for a beginner, however u have to consider you'll become a jack of all trades which has its pros and cons
2022-06-23 17:27
i did kyokushinkai for 3 years which is like Muay thai pretty much except u cant face punch people, may sound weird but yeah, since we fight barehanded its too dangerous to hit someone face and break him

Boxing. simply the best. even tho we don't use kicking & elbows like muay thai, mastering your punches & footwork will make you almost untouchable in a street fight. and considering you did taekwondo before, you'll have a good knowledge on how to defend yourself from kicks in a fight.
2022-06-23 18:43

you're not wrong, boxing is ideal for street fighting vs untrained people. however like u said u need to learn kick defense and also some grappling
