I don't know about Albanian, but Hungarian and Romanian are not Slavic languages. Hungarian is related to Finnish, Ainu, Mongolic and Turkish. Romanian is a Romance language, so related to Italian, Spanish, Philippino, Portuguese, French, ...

With the standard term western and eastern Europe - both Hungary and Poland is eastern Europe. With your logic Germany is not western Europe

i.imgur.com/DRxE9GG.jpg This is how I see Europe. Yellow is North. Red is East. Blue is South. Green is West. Brown is Central. So yes, Hungary and Poland are Central, and Germany is West. I don't know in what category you would put Germany otherwise, I suppose Central would also work.

:) Obviously there is some room for disagreement. Bulgaria is more to the south than to the east, but I'd put it as east because it has more socio-cultural ties with the east. Scandinavia is in the north, obviously, but they're not so different from west Europe, and the other way around goes for the Netherlands, which is also sometimes included as a Nordic country. Romania likes to claim it's central Europe as well because they want to distance themselves from "the east", but eh. A part of Kazakhstan and Azerbajian are also in Europe, but I couldn't be bothered drawing lines there. I'm a little disappointed you didn't complain about me colouring Lebanon and Tunisia. I was going to make a joke about them being honorary Europeans, but you ruined it. Hahah.

I did actually not see that you marked those countries mens)))))
2022-06-26 00:28
there has been many definitions over time. currently germany, sweden, norway etc. is western europe because of socio-economic focus. historically speaking germany was always more a central european country, opposing the "real" west france, uk etc. socio-historically germany is a central european country together with the likes of austria, poland, hungary, czech, slovakia etc. because of all the influences they had/have on each other
2022-06-25 21:07

I might be oldschool since I use the politically (cold war) definiton - eastern and western Europe. Maybe I should start using the central Europe term, but Scandinavia will still be western Europe like France or Netherlands for me mens)))))

Tbh, not really useful to learn it, but if you like something, i guess you can go for it. The benefit of it is that you can speak with Croats, Bosnians, Monenegrian and a good part of Macedonian ppl too. People will respect you for the effort. Downside, pretty useless outside Balkans
2022-06-25 16:55
There is no reason learn it unless you're gonna move to Balkans so why would you learn it. If you are gonna move here then it's great because you can speak to pretty much anyone from the ex-Yugoslavia region (except Macedonians their language is a good amount different)

Waste of time to learn any southslavic language or dialect, unless you're a diplomat or buisnessman that plans to work here. Russian is more prevalent in the world and when you learn russian you have about 60% knowlage of all other slavic languages apart from polish. The alphabet might be a problem if you plan to learn any of the two.

by learning serbian you'll be able to understand everyone in serbia, croatia, bosnia, montenegro. if this part of the world interests you, then do it, if not, don't. from then on, slovenian and macedonian only take a little extra effort to understand them well.

As Serbian i wouldnt recomend, bcs u couldnt use it that much as some others languages. Serbian diaspora is indeed big, but still there are better languages to learn. Ofc for me language is nice but its also very hard to learn for non Serbian. And ty for ur desire to learn it and for nice words about it =))) edit: though as #114 said, u could understand and talk with everyone from exyu counries, and even understand some Bulgarians and Russians.
