5G internet?
karrigan |

I heard something about that 5G internet reduces the MS by a good amount, does anyone know if this will make online gaming between NA and EU possible? Or is that still way out in the future of the internet?

Im trying to be serious, even though its HLTV :D

Starlink will make online gaming between NA, EU and SA possible

I thought Starlink was more of a backup kind of system.

was Elon words, maybe take time to happen

They are making improvements for sure but latency is still far behind wired connections

only if eu conquers na again and moves to america lol

What is ur current ping in like east coast usa servers?

5G is going to cause a massive disruption to infrastructure with all the towers that need to be built. It's also not going to benefit the average person that much, mostly big business.

what towers? cell-towers? Because then you're mistaken. You're gonna reuse the towers and even some of the equiptment running 4G today, will have a software upgrade and enable 5G. Both technologies are using LTE and a lot of the same frequensies.

Only a matter of time...

In short: 5G has a much higher frequency than 4G, therefore it allows for a higher rate of data transfer, ultimately allowing more users per tower and lower ping. Unfortunately it does need more towers than 5G, bc higher frequency means a faster drop in performance density per distance from the tower. It isn't really made for the average consumer, it's more of an infrastructural upgrade for the industry and big data.

You cannot drag this opinion down on the entire world. For instance here in Denmark we have some 3G and 4G running on the 1800mhz & 2100mhz bandwith. most of our 5G Signal will be on 800mhz - and as you correct stated - higher frequency = more towers.

I would require a lot from the hosting side of things. So I really dont think that 5G will be the solution.

Should be slower at least in theory since the actual connection still goes under the sea from EU to NA and vice versa. Adding the additional layers of 5G infra it should be slower than normal internet ping-wise.

idk shit about it but why would it be faster than fiber?

it wouldn't be, fiber = speed of light

No way lol

I think broadband fiber is better than 5g. I think wired connection >> wireless.

the ping is given by the amount of time information needs to travel from point A to point B. At this time when you connect to NA servers, information travels by wire across the ocean to the NA server (which takes 1-200ms). There is no faster way to transfer information than by wire (except maybe in cases when the wireless distance is smaller than the wired distance). When they say "it's got much better ping", that is just compared to 4G, 3G, etc.

Nah, that's BS… 5G might lower latency between the receptor and the antenna, but the reach is pretty short. After that, you need another antenna (which multiplies latency) or fallback to wired connection.

5g is only an improvement over 4g. Fiber-optics will always be the best

yes pls so i can play LoL on asians servers, i will lose my mind if i get one more Polak on my team

only function of 5G is to fry ur brain and turn men into creatures that celebrates June month

There are many new features for latency reduction, such as improved QoS framework for prioritized gaming-related packets transmission, physical layer flexibility and settings for low-latency coding etc. Although latency will somewhat decrease, you should still stick to wired connection if possible

Somehow missed the question about NA/EU connection. No, 5G networks cannot improve this, the only thing to decrease latency between continents is to improve inter-continental backbones, which is happening but I don't think sub-100 ms is coming soon.

no, 5g is nothing special, 6g will be huge though
